Some already mentioned Poets of the Fall, and they should. They're awesome.

Since that's been covered, I suppose I'll mention Avantasia and Edguy. Both bands are fronted by Tobias Sammet, though they frequently collaborate with other metal legends such as Jorn Lande, Russell Allen, Michael Kiske, Tim "Ripper" Owens, and Amanda Somerville.

Dommin (fantastic gothic rock, currently rising in popularity)
Hotspur (insanely catchy pop rock group, unfortunately underrated and unsigned)
Liz Triangle (Touhou-themed arrange group, but a great band even on their own merits)
Panic Lift (industrial/electronic group, seems to be dead)
Creature Feature (dark cabaret, loves their Halloween)
Alevela (new punk rock band, still in the demo stage)

The samurai jazz band PE'Z. Their style is weird (in an awesome way) and their music is great.

This is the best I could find in my library, 1000 internets to anyone who has actually heard of this band before

Do youtube stars count? If so Kina Grannis. If not, I guess Creature Feature. They're all I can think of right now, I'm sure I'll have a million more after I post this.

Two bands that I absolutely adore, but nobody knows.

This one isn't the full song, but you still get the gist of it and its incredible chorus. The video's a bit weird, though.
And now for something completely different. VERY VERY important to read the lyrics here [http://www.lyricsmania.com/revenge_of_julian_modely_lyrics_rabbit_junk.html]!

Apparently, Huey Lewis and the News is unknown to my peers. I mean... Why? They're AWESOME!

My other favorite band is Queen, which IS recognized here. Thankfully.
Hey, I know these guys! They made a couple of songs for Back to the Future.

Dredg... noone in the posts I've read have mentioned them so either they are too popular or noone knows who they are one of the 2 so I'm mentioning them anyways.

I don't listen to many bands I prefer Electonica artists so if I actually like them they must be doing something right.

There's a link to my favorite song of theirs

They're not exactly unknown but if anyone on here is going through looking for bands to look up, try -

Okkervil River 'For Real'
The Antlers 'Putting the dog to sleep'
Neutral Milk Hotel 'King of Carrot Flowers pt. 1'
Nicole Atkins 'Cool Enough'
Antony and the Johnsons 'Hope there's someone'
Rilo Kiley 'Sliver Lining'

My personal favourite of those would be The Antlers. People just don't seem to make music that good anymore.

If someone hasn't already replied, this is what you do for youtube videos:

[ youtube= ] and place the last part of the URL for that link on youtube

But without the spaces.

I have a few although I don't think they're entirely unheard of since I know a lot of people who also like them.

I admit I like their songs if you can ignore the heavy Christian overtones, but every song they do seems to be some kind of love song to Jesus/God. It's good for them to have their beliefs and to be passionate about them but it's not really my taste.

So escapists, what bands do you like that aren't considered " mainstream" ?
Wait, are we here to talk about lesser known bands, or "non-mainstream" ...?

In any case: http://outrunthebuffalo.bandcamp.com/album/but-now-they-live-in-a-zoo

I think my favourite 'lesser-known' band/artist has to be Dan Le Sac Vs Scroobius Pip.
