Perfect dark is a must, failing that then Golden Eye 007. as perfect dark is a spiritual sequel to it (plays the same but has many upgrades and extra features to it).

Mischief Makers. I think it's a fairly obscure title, and it probably has aged far worse than any of the other titles in this thread, but it was a fun platformer when I was a kid!

Wow, there are a lot of great titles in this thread! I wonder if game design was really that great back then, or we are just having our asses kicked by nostalgia

I have a desire to quote each and every one of these posts to point out that they need to be played.

The Banjo Kazooie games, Diddy Kong Racing, Donkey Kong 64 are all great choices. I would recommend Mario Party, but it's a controller destroyer so it's a good idea to stay away from that.

Mario Party... Me and my brother used to be quite competitive about that. So we really wore down our controllers with rotating the stick and jamming certain buttons as fast as possible. I even wore down the skin on my hand when I found that I might be able to better rotate the stick of the controller with the palm of my hand T__T

I used the palm of my hand... I ended up wearing down the skin there so much I actually started bleeding a few times. Tug of war, pedal power, paddle battle. Our analog sticks were almost useless after Mario Party.

I'm glad to know that I'm not the only one who did something like that. But when all the skin was peeling off I decided I had better stop so I didn't get to the point of bleeding. Instead I used the other hand. -__-

And sadly in the end I don't think we necessarily won so much against the computer in those games. For all our effort.

But yeah... it really wore down the controllers. And we played it a lot.

The computers were close to unbeatable in most of those games, especially if you were alone in Paddle Battle against 3 of them. My sister was really good in those games though. She usually wore gloves because she had a history of some serious skin loss . I also remember that I had some serious problems even completing Pedal Power at all. Another friend of mine also used his palm so we're far from alone (my friend lived on the other side of the country when I had Mario Party). The game was great, but I think there's a reason why they didn't use the analog stick in the same way in Mario Party 2 or 3.

But yes, I imagine due to some feedback they decided to make more reasonable games in the future.

Still... I would imagine they'd test to see how fast the average person could do those games. It feels like for some of them they kinda failed to do that. At least in the first game XP

I feel like some of the newer games did set the bar a bit too high too, but not as much as some of the games in the first one. I often feel this with the button mashing games in Mario Party 3 and 4 where you need to be really quick. In the most recent ones it seems like they set the bar a bit too low though... Oh well, Mario Party did give me a happy childhood.

There isn't nearly enough Jet Force Gemini love in here. From the visuals to the music to the gameplay, there really isn't anything I don't like about this game. If it has any con, it's that it suffers from Rare's standard "collect everything" syndrome that plagues every game they ever make. So if you tend to dislike "scavenger hunt" games, then you might give that one a pass, but you would be missing out.

I would have to say Rogue Squadron. There's just something innately awesome about flying around in an X-Wing blowing up Tie Fighters.

Outside of some of my more obvious picks (Both Zeldas, Smash Bros, Mario 64, Paper Mario) Jet Force Gemini comes to mind. I loved everything about that game, (Apart from getting platinum on the Floyd missions.) In fact most games made by Rare for the N64 were ace. I think the N64 had some great games, regardless of little 3rd party support.

I admit i was a playstation kid growing up, so i never really played an excessive amount of N64. That said though, i have played through some games on the system..and i can safely say my Answer isn't one i can put into words without copying everybody else. So, i think i'll tell you my answer the old fashioned way: IN SONG!

Perfect Dark absolutely loved this game probably the best offline FPS multiplayer I have ever played sure the main campaign was really really bad but the challenges were fun and I really liked the weaponry, the only reason I got an N64 at the time was this game.

I just got a Nintendo 64 last week. So far, I have Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time and Star Wars: Episode I Podracing. I just need some suggestions for good games to seek out, and I wanted to know what were some of the best of the lot.

My personal favorite, was either Goldeneye or Super Smash Bros.

So go ahead and mention some great classics of the bygone era, when Nintendo wasn't just thrusting gimmicks at us.

I think the 5 essential list is

1. Super Smash Brothers. - my favourite
2. Mario Kart 64
3. Conkers Bad Fur Day
4. Golden Eye
5. Super Mario 64(? No wait surely one of the Zelda's belong here?)

Considering it was a sort of spiritual successor, you should definitely give Perfect Dark a chance. I haven't finished Perfect Dark but it's a fun little shoot-em-up.

I saw a lot of people saying Perfect Dark. I have yet to play it, so I think I'll try to find it.

Everybody loves Banjo-Kazooie, and if you do, you'll love Banjo-Tooie even more.

Seriously, I feel that Tooie doesn't get anywhere near the amount of love it deserves....IMO, the best game you can get on XBLA.

The two Zelda's are obvious, Mario 64 is great, DK64, Conker's Bad Fur Day....

I didn't read the thread but yes this is my favourite. Also, there's DK64 as well, which is a similar game.

I got Robotron 64 and Blast Corps. recently for nostalgic reasons, but I think they still hold up today and are great games. Robotron 64 also has the greatest techno soundtrack ever for any video game, and it fits perfectly with the gameplay.

If you can't (or rather not) get it on the N64, then there's always the XBLA version.
