Persona 3 and Persona 4 are both amazing games and seem to be lesser known RPGs. Radiata Stories and Suikoden Teirkreis are two other RPG games I greatly enjoy that don't seem to be as popular.

I would have to say... Metal Saga by Atlas...Was pretty cool and had its good moments

I'd say the Persona series. They really took all the conventions of normal RPGs and ate them for lunch. Each one switches up the formula in really interesting ways, despite the fact that 3 and 4 are well over 80 hours apiece.

NIER is definitely one. It was only published by Square, made by Cavia. Awesome game.

Also, Resonance of Fate is fucking sweet.

quick question "how far did you get in resonance?" i only got up to i think chapter four before the difficulty spiked so hard i just gave up.

Parasite Eve II was awesome, it reminded me of Vagrant Story in the way the spell type things worked. Actually, Vagrant Story is my answer, it's not very well known to my knowledge.
