Wow, lots of good music presented so far!

I wouldn't say that they're unknown, but I would say they aren't known enough: Dredg
GREAT band! I've been digging 'El Cielo' since I got it at the very end of last year; it's already one of my favorite c.d.'s. I'll probably get 'Catch Without Arms' very soon. Awesome that its one less recommendation I have to make.

Motion City Soundtrack: I know most Americans, or anyone with some good sense of music would have heard of them, but sadly the area that i live in...Or, should i say, the country i live in, doesn't seem to know what good music is.
Nice pop-punk band. I'm a fan of most anything that comes from Epitaph records, but it took me a bit longer to get into these guys. Still, can't deny the pure fun you get by listening to these guys

Perhaps the purest pop group out today...

Guarenteed that no one has ever heard of them. Also for all you weeaboos out there they are an American band.
Guarantee I have, as a constant downloader of free samplers from Pure Volume. They've got a couple songs I really enjoy, including "All That I Can't Keep." For some reason, I never did explore them any further, but perhaps in the future.

Sigur Ros, an Icelandic post-rock band, is my favorite.
Sigur Ros is excellent! Fan of any other Post Rock? My favorite band of the genre is Explosions In The Sky. The c.d. 'The Earth Is Not A Cold Dead Place' is so beautiful, so relaxing.

The Sounds. Download their best single "Tony the Beat" and you won't be sorry.
Apparently they did the theme music for that turd movie "Snakes on a Plane" but don't let that turn you off.
That song is actually credited to Cobra Starship, but the girl from The Sounds was featured in it (along with the singer from Gym Class Heroes). I've only heard one song by The Sounds, but it's a good one ("Ego").

GENIOUS! Bouncing Souls are ace! Again...Epitaph Records. I'm more a fan of "Anchors Aweigh" and "New Day."

I think they're pretty popular, maybe not commercially, but critically. As for me...well, I discovered them only last year, and they're one of my favorite bands now. Not enough positive things I can say about them.
Anyways, I've got a few. All the names link to their MySpace profile where you can hear some songs and such. First off, my favorite band:
[BAD RELIGION] [http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewProfile&friendID=2733345]
If you listen to Green Day or Sum-41 or The Offspring or NOFX or even Simple Plan, you owe your music to these guys. If you've ever played the first Guitar Hero, you already know a song by them ("Infected," the very first song on that game). You ought to get into them more. Very melodic punk rock, and a band that will make you think. Be sure to keep a dictionary handy....
[DAYS AWAY] [http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewProfile&friendID=2061225]
If you like Anberlin or Jimmy Eat World or Mae, you'll probably dig these guys. They were on the label Fueled by Ramen when they put out their first (and so far only) full-length LP 'Mapping an Invisible World', and they sound like veterans.
[ASHERU] [http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewProfile&friendID=28500729]
This is the guy who does the theme song to the cartoon "The Boondocks." He's a real underground rapper and he infuses jazz into his songs. Check him out, go ahead.
[STARFLYER 59] [http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewProfile&friendID=11729254]
These guys are on Tooth and Nail records (home of such greats as Anberlin and UnderOath). They're a really chill band that make awesome dream-pop-bordering-on-shoegaze, and has been making awesome music since the early 90's. Check 'em out...
[CYNIC] [http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewProfile&friendID=337569132]
Apparently legendary Progressive-Melodic-Kinda-But-Not-Really-Death Metal. They just put out a new c.d. 2008; the c.d. before that came out in 1993. Strange vocal effect that they use in their songs, but they're pretty awesome.
[DANGERDOOM] [http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewProfile&friendID=2017041]/[MF DOOM] [http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewProfile&friendID=26224531]
If you have the Gorillaz c.d. 'Demon Days', he's the MC that raps in the song "November Has Come." His flow is impeccable, and he's got a sense of humor like no other MC. He's also done so many collaborations that its not funny at all; perhaps his most well known is the one he did with Danger Mouse, called (appropriately) DangerDoom. They made a c.d. that serves as an homage to Adult Swim. Good stuff.
[PORCUPINE TREE] [http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewProfile&friendID=61819211]
They're a cool band, just straight rock (more towards post-grunge, but not really there). The c.d. 'Fear of a Blank Planet' is a really straightfoward look at the life of teenagers today.
[MUTE MATH] [http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewProfile&friendID=3204454]
Great rock band, leans more toward pop-punk, but with much more substance than what you might hear on the radio. MUCH more. They also have some interesting melodies.
[BLACK STAR] [http://music.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=music.Discography&artistid=18796] (Mos Def & Talib Kweli)
If you enjoy listening to hip-hop in any degree (actually enjoy it, not just dance to it), then you should know about Mos Def and/or Talib Kweli. Both are great in their own right, and Black Star sees them coming together for a collaboration. They put out only one self-titled album, but what an album! It's deep, conscious rap that you can use to shut people up who keep saying rap is useless (actually, you can use any of the rap I recommended to do that).
[CELLDWELLER] [http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewProfile&friendID=4055928]
You may have heard Celldweller and not have even known it. They have 18 songs on their only full-length studio LP, and every single one of them were licensed to some other media (video games, movies, etc.; only two other artists in all the music industry can make that claim). They make Electro-Industrial Rock, a bit more Electronic-influenced than Nine Inch Nails, but Reznor fans will probably dig them anyways.
I've got quite a few more I could give, but that's enough for now.
