That is one of the C'tan gods of the Necrons called the Void Dragon, and he is special in that he can control machines. He is currently imprisoned in a labyrinth deep below the surface of Mars, placed there by the Emperor around the time of the Bronze Age.
According to Wikipedia, the Emperor fought him in the first millennium, hence not the bronze age. (Unless the person who added that forgot to add a "BC", in which case you're right.)

My favourite has to be the T'au. I mean, they developed from stone-age hunter-gatherers to a major (if small) high-tech space-faring empire in six thousand years, and given time, who knows what new heights T'au technology will reach.

Eldar:

Roll 3D6 to hit...
Woot! Three sixes! That unit is automatically dead.

Wait! What day is it!? Does it end in "y"? Sure enough. I also just killed the 12 units surrounding the one I fired on.

I love the Necrons. Because they are basically what you would get if you took the Terminator franchise and gave it to someone who could actually write well.

All of them are great, but in collecting I always use Tau, since they suit my battle style perfectly. I've always been a shooty sort of person, long range works best with me. I remember once I played a guy with a Space Marine army, all I had was a single Piranha skimmer, a Crisis Suit at the back (HQ Choice), a single Broadside near him at the back, a single Fire Warrior squad middle ground, and a Kroot Carnivore squad at the front. Overwhelming enemy force, but I managed to win by basically hopping my Kroot into a copse on the battlefield, coming straight out into the nearest enemy force and ripping them to shreds, and having my Piranha and Fire Warriors keep the other squads at bay from being able to attack my Kroot. A few consolidations later, and I'd basically wiped out the entire superior enemy army.

That was on the tabletop game, by the way. In Dawn of War, particularly Soulstorm, I usually use Sisters of Battle or Imperial Guard, and occasionally Space Marines, as I prefer to create a huge army to overwhelm the enemy. That said, I focus a lot more on tactics than firepower so I often end up using an Eldar army and then simply having my allies cover me while I build up a strike team, then use the Webway to attack from behind while the bulk of my troops launch a distracting frontal assault. Best way to win with Eldar, attack from multiple flanks and retreat straight away to the Webway if it looks like you're in over your head. Works almost every time :)

Do not ask which creature screams in the night. Do not question who waits for you in the shadow. It is my cry that wakes you in the night, and my body that crouches in the shadow. I am Tzeentch and you are the puppet that dances to my tune...

ALL IS DUST!
ALL HAIL THE CHANGER OF WAYS!
ALL HAIL CHAOS!

The correct answer is in fact the Imperium of mankind. One word, EXTERMINATUS!!!!!!
The Imperial Gaurd are the best army of course, they have the most character and they charge into battle in their milions with laser pens and bayonets and hundereds of tanks.
The Black Templars are of course the best marines for this one reason The Holy Orb of Antioch aka the Holy Hand Grenade from Monty Python
"Burn the heretic, Kill the mutant, suffer the unclean not to live"
"The Emporer is watching, the Emporer knows"
"Wisdom is the beginning of fear" and so on with all the others.
And they are fascist, which makes them cool and they are completely intolerant of aliens and heretics. It is really quite amusing. When you think about it, the Tau are the same as the Imperium, only they are a little bit nicer. With the Tau, its join us or die, with the Imperium its DIE DIE DIE and then defile your grave.
I would also like to point out that my 1500 gaurd list has not lost a single battle since this codex and the one before it, i just can't take it to tournaments because i'm too lazy to paint it XD

Gotta say the Imperium. Everyone and everything is against them and they're constantly on the verge of destruction, but they refuse to go down and keep fighting for the Emperor.

Religious fanaticism at its finest.

My favourite race, in terms of fluff, have to be Space Marines, or, more specifically, either Space Wolves or Dark Angels, since their backstories are incredibly interesting, particularly the fate of their Primarchs.

However, to play, I reckon Chaos are my favourite, especially Daemons, since they're so damn unpredictable. I never take 40K games seriously enough, so I can't help but laugh when my Greater Daemon of Khorne suddenly vanishes in a puff of smoke in the face of whoever I'm facing.

Eldar and Tyranids.

Eldar because they're crafty, cunning, and a little different than the usual tank-men. Plus, they have mind powers, always a plus. I also like them because they use females in their military. Even though I've never played DoW 2 (only DoW), the Farseer is a favourite of mines. Not exactly sure why.

Tyranids for obvious reasons of being awesome aliens. If the Warhammer universe continued, the Tyranids would obviously win as the rest of the fleet travels intou the Milky Way galaxy. Even the combined might of every other race wouldn't stop the entire Tyranid race.
The problem is, all codexes are filled with glorifying quotes like that like the orks being the most powerful force in the universe if they could fight under one banner.

I never knew there were so many Orc fans
just spam turrets and send your best troops right into their base to demolish their CP
Space marines are the best just orbit drop white knights and a terminator squad next to there CP

The Imperial Guard. Because no matter how many gribbly monsters you have, no matter how heroic your leaders, no matter how magical your tech, no matter how fast your grav-craft and jetbikes, no matter how many venom-spitting monsters or tentacled supermen you have...we have the most firepower and the most men.

The Imperial Guard: Truly unstoppable.
