The Halo 1, 2, and 3 music. Marty O'Donnell is an excellent composer.
Agreed. The music set the tone for Halo. I liked the soundtrack for Bioshock. Not really music, but it set the scene for the game. I like soundtracks that make the gaming experience more intense for the gamer.

pretty much everything that marty o'donnell or jesper kyd ever composed....
and the instrumental version of "i stand alone" that plays in the dahaka chases of pop2. the song isn't anything special, but it fits the mood so well, you're all tensed up timing your jumps and stuff and dahaka's hot on your tail, its almost perfect......
full soundtracks, it'd be half life 2 episodes, and all 3 prince of persias...
and mario theme :D

Obviously most people will say the Final Fantasy games have amazing soundtracks. Id have to agree because the music in the older games used to put me in the right frame of mind for playing. It sucked me in. The background music in Elder Scrolls : Oblivion is great too, it sets the mood perfectly and most of the time you don't notice it until it changes.

Nintendo games generally have awesome tracks
Favourites include:
The Legend of Zelda, specifically Wind Waker, specifically The Great Sea, Dragon Roost Island, Molgera and the credits theme
Metroid and Metroid Prime, with particular attention payed to the title and credits themes of both games.
Speaking of credits themes, I've got science to do. We do what we must, because we can.
The Kirby games are truly awesome, favourites include Green Greens from Kirby's Dreamland and Dedede's Theme.
Earthbound is in a class of its own. You have to hear the music to believe it.
While we're talking about Earthbound, Melee's renditions of Pollyanna and Bein' Friends/Mary's Theme are ASTOUNDING
And finally, last, but definitely NOT least, we have Doukutsu Monogatari, known as Cave Story, one of the best games I've played since ever, with tracks that make Route 1 forgettable by comparison.

really i never play Jrpgs but when i heard One Winged Angel it sounded so cluttered like the composer wanted to jam as much as possible in, i thought it was a very bad piece.

mostly from the PSone, that really took advantage of the CD track and put in some wonderful quality scores with Metal Gear Solid and Silent Hill but in later generations with PS2/3 the soundtrack hasn't been as important.

I have to be honest and say i prefer Konami's own orchestra from MGS1 to the Harry Gregson Williams soundtrack of later, with MGS1 having that kind of neo-tokyo Akira like sound to it and was able to really give character to the desolate nuclear base with it's haunting and industrial sounds. First chance i got in MGS4 was get out the ipod and put on the MGS1 music. Williams' tracks were just a so-so composer for average action movies, nothing special.

EDIT: how could I forget Jesper Kyd's contribution to the Hitman series, now that just shaped the feel of the game to give it almost a chilling feeling as you home in on the kill.

I love all the music in Shenmue. I'm still trying to get my hands on the soundtrack for that game, though I have "acquired" some of my faves.

I wish it was easier to buy the soundtrack of your favourite games, but with the current state of copyright laws and internet distribution, It is unlikely companies like Konami will be selling MP3's from their website. Maybe they will soon see the market that they are ignoring and start selling to a need.

That would be really cool, but I don't think the potential market would be quite big enough for them to consider doing it unless its a huge title. I guess I'll just have to see if I can get lucky with the soundtracks that were sold down Gamestation in Birmingham. Well unless they have been taken off the shelves since GAME took over and completly destroyed and unique selling points that Gamestation used to have.

Actually Morrowind, Icewind Dale and The original Zelda score came to mind quite quickly. Although I wouldn't dare to say they're great tunes they've somehow made themselves at home and come back from time to time just to deprive me of some bloody sleeping hours.

True, but then on the other hand, we're starting to see some soundtracks appear on itunes, so maybe all hope is not lost. I think digital distribution is the most likely way for soundtracks to become (legally) readily available in the west, I guess only time will tell.
