I've been looking around the forums and I never really see much stuff looking at storyline in games (or maybe im not looking that hard, who knows)
But im here to ask peoples opinions on what their favourite story in a videogame is, because im a really nosy bastard.

I may as well start this off, My favourite story in a game has to be the MGS series. I know its a little generic but what the hell, the story is great.
I even shed a tear at the ending of MGS4.
BTW the gameplay f**king awesome too, the fight against liquid ocelot is one of my favourite moments in a game.

EDIT: You can pick more than one if you need to

Warcraft 3 had an amazing story for an RTS game. Boy was I hating Arthas by the end of the Human Campaign, but then was worshiping his brutal nature when he was killing for the Scourge.

...how on earth do you expect me to narrow that down? Seriously, that's a major consideration in a lot of my games, and I like many different stories for many different reasons. Picking a favorite out of all of those is asking too much.

Here's one picked arbitrarily.

Anyone who's glanced at my avatar should not be surprised.

I have a couple of favorites, firstly being Bioshock. It's not exactly perfect but at least the themes presented in the game are not only applicable in terms of political theory but don't feel as if the only reason the antagonist exists is because of a lack of cognitive capabilities amongst the in game masses. Also if I may ad I did enjoy Far Cry 2 as a story because as a game it abandoned the theme of the player being on this moral high ground and took the idea of good and evil as they are existing solely as points of perception. Lastly I did enjoy Final Fantasy X, ignoring some of the more obvious faults I did like that the game actually felt like it had an epic conclusion in that one with out the cliche scene in which the protagonists waiting around the bend just out of sight to say "I was here the whole time".... And as far as I'm concerned X-2 never happened.

- Kingdom Hearts games. The strange way they bring an odd multiverse of Disney and Square characters together and manage to give complex emotional characterizations to corporate icons is very interesting.

-Final Fantasy X, go ahead and flame me. I liked the story, particularly the dynamics of Yuna as she loses her faith.

-GTA San Andreas. There is that moment when you get your brother out of jail and you are a huge success, but you ignored your home and where you were from. It hit me and surprised me in a very real way.

Lots of others too.

I quite liked Final Fantasy 10, it had such a sad ending

Thank you, someone else who sees that the game has a good story. At least when the Jackel was talking, the rest of it weren't so good

I'm probably going to get flamed for this since hating Halo seems to be the new cool thing to do, but when you go full boat, read all the books and comics, play ALL the games all the way through and generally get to to know every aspect of it, the Halo universe is utterly unrivaled when it comes to story.

Pretty much any Bioware game I've played this far, as well as GTA San Andreas (god, I was so satisfied at the end, no matter the clicheness of it all)

Deus Ex
Fallout 1
Final Fantasy VI
Final Fantasy X
Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 3

Half-Life and Mass Effect

They are, so far, the only games I've played that made me legitimately care about the characters and their fate.

It really was agonizing watching Alex's father die. And don't even mention having to choose who to save in ME. Almost got some genuine tears out of me. Almost I say!

The Longest Journey for the best story.
Planescape: Torment is a contender, but not quite as good with just the main storyline (all the setting ambience and sidequests, however...) Thief has a similar problem with the ambience only.

Xenogears earns a special mention; if it wasn't so confusing, then that might be enough to render it the best...
