Sailor Moon or DBZ. Dunno what year, but I recall still watching Barney and stuff.

Welll...

The first anime I watched with full knowledge that it was anime was the Macross Zero OVA, fansubbed on youtube, without sound, in the back room in my grandparents' house. That I still actually liked it is a bit of a miracle. When I got back, I re-watched it with sound, and it was very weird to me, but looking back, it's still very weird.

That, however is not what sold me on anime as a medium.

The first I saw that really got me into anime was The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, by exposure to tvtropes and a chance encounter with a Dschingis Kahn AMV. TMoS was really cleverly written, well framed and animated, and overall a compelling series, and through tvtropes, I started looking up other anime series.

The rest is history. Well, fairly recent history, anyway.

I thiiiink it was Trigun. But that was quickly followed by Rurouni Kenshin, Ranma 1/2 and Gundam Wing in some order or another, with a little bit of CLAMP manga thrown in for good measure. I watched all of Kenshin through Netflix, slow disc by disc, with my mom and little sister, and we were all very deeply in love with it. ^^

Edit: wow, now that I think about it, that was around 1999 or 2000. I feel like I've been an anime fan much longer than that... :p

I can't remember if it was Pokemon or DBZ first. I stopped watching anime for a while then picked up Bleach during middleschool.

The first anime that I ever saw some episodes of, was Dragon Ball Z. I think, I was under 10 at that time, I'm not really sure.

Digimon was the first anime i actually watched. Then came the shameful ( :p ) viewing of Sailor Moon, then cardcaptors, eventually after having played the game and watching the movie, i figured out the Pokemon was a show as well, so i jumped on that.
Digimon :)

The first series I ever watched was Pokemon, back when I was about eight or nine. Back then, I didn't actually know it was anime, or even Japanese, because this was back when 4Kids was still doing it (but hey, they did well with the first couple seasons of Pokemon, I reckon.)

First one I ever watched really seriously was Excel Saga, although I never did watch episode 26.

Mine?
In 1976 I use to watch Speed Racer on TV. Around '77 It was "Battle of the Planets". In 1984 I realized that cartoons such as "Voltron", "Robotech" and "Tranzor Z" were somehow different than the other cartoons like "smurfs" and such, but didn't make the "Anime" connection yet, but the media was young in those days.

When I was a Junior in high school, in 1991, I was given a VHS tape and said it had "The Robotech Movie" in it's original Japanese. Also, there was "some crappy cartoon on before it"

The "Crappy Cartoon" was Bubblegum Crisis (1987 version) and the movie was a Subbed version of "Macross: Do you Remember Love?"

I consider Bubblegum Crisis to be my official "first"

Technically Starblazers, although Macross was the first one that was introduced to me as 'Anime' by one of the guys stationed with me in Korea, who was a huge fan. We used to take a bus into Seoul to look for OSTs, and I always wondered what the big deal was until I actually sat down and watched some with him. After Macross, Trigun, and Cowboy Bebop, I understood.

the ORIGINAL Pokemon series. ah, the nostalgia.
The best part was the constant changing of the voice actors. Ash and James had like 5 different voices each during the beginning of the series.
