As an advocate of emotional complexity and deep thinking on the Escapist (or so I like to think!) I'd like to open this topic for discussion, the most emotionally complex question that an individual can be posed with.

What is the reason you live everyday, the ideal that drives you, that permeates your very being or the underlying emotional attachment that affects every facet of your existence? Has it been affected or (if you wish) guided by religion? Has it been changed by the world you have become a part of, or the life you have lived thus far? Share it and discuss.

My own-

I was born into religion myself, but I was never religious. I never believed, nor do I want to, and nor do I know what the point is. I exist. This is me, these are the things I have done, these are the choices I have made. Am I to change who I am to please another, the very essence of myself? I am young and thirsty for everything. Let me live.

I believe that all we can do is try to make sense of this vast, complex and dangerous life we find ourselves in, to find a place for ourselves, and find what we love the most. Live one day at a time, don't think about destiny, it only leads to wasted wishes and unfulfilled dreams, or unhappy paths we 'must' take. Find that which comforts you, share all that you can to the world.

Above all, love. Love everything you can. Love living, love the people you know, love the world, love yourself. Love is the reason we are human, the thing that defines our identity.

I should also mention I'm a painter, a writer, a poet and a creator in general. To make something with one's own hands, talent and skill and present it to the world holds a joy like none other. Creation is a big part of my existence, and I sure love doing it! :)

Here's some beautifully fitting music to listen to while you write your response.
(and if anyone could teach me how to embed that would be great!!)

EDIT:
Oh, and most people are taking 'why do you exist?' as a literal question... Yeah, your mum and dad made love, it's pretty common! :) I mean what drives your existence, why do you keep wanting to exist? To have fun and pleasure? To make things and help people?

This is all totally subjective!!!!!

Happy New Year everyone. Love you all! Love the Escapist!!!

Happy new year to you as well. Any way, for me I'm not really sure what I live for everyday. I just go on by thinking about what I am doing in that current day. I survive school and stay at home most of the time playing guitar and listening to music. I guess the thought of getting better at music and working out motivate me to go and wake up the next day. When it comes to a philosophical standpoint, in my AP Bio class I try to comprehend how the molecules and cells communicate with each other and how they know to do what they do. I try to really figure out how atoms came together to become elements, which become molecules, which be come cells, which become us.

Brilliant! You turn to science to make sense of this life! :) I don't have a scientific mind, so it would barely help me find my place, but perhaps it would help you find some perspective on yours? It just sounds to me like you enjoy living day by day, and bettering yourself in the things you know you can do, much like myself :)

Leave the world in a better condition than you found it.

Can I do that single-handedly? Of course not. But I can do my part. Everyone has the power to improve the world, we're just constantly told that we don't.

My life philosophy? Well...currently I'm suffering from cognitive dissonance. By currently, I mean for the past decade or so.

Why I exist? My raison d'etre? My students.

What I live for? Not really sure.

Why I exist: Because my parents decided to do the worm one night..

What I live for: So many things I have not/want to do.. :)

This ties heavily into my standing on religion, but I'm see no problem with there being no "point" to my life, no "reason for existence", if you will. Science does a fine job of explaining things through logical testing and reasoning, and gets better as we understand more about our world. I live my life the way I play Minecraft. However the fuck I want, within the rules of the game.

Merry New Years Evukkah.

The reason for living? wouldn't that necessarily be the answer to life, the universe, and everything as well? iunno, I stopped really having anything to drive me, which is why ive stopped doing anything truly meaningful (for now!)

hmm. im not entirely sure if my life had played out differently, i'd be different as well. Well, little things would but overall I think ive kept a few core concepts my whole life o_O

Really, the thing that motivates me most is myself. i've never truly enjoyed the idea of doing something for others instead of yourself (though ive no moral high ground for this, I did it too) in an overall sense. i've always thought if you can only be a success for other people, then whats the point of it all if YOU dont enjoy it, or your not doing it for you? I dont mean individual acts, but more of an overall arc, like a career or something to that effect.

Hmm, thats the problem I have explaining myself like this. I always lose track of my original focus. so I guess i'll sum it up.

I don't believe in destiny, or fate, or whatever you may call it. I dont subscribe to any religion. I think people, how they act while they're younger, always take one or two core concepts with them the rest of their lives, and they build themselves around those concepts. Most everything else is subject to change, but that those one or two things are what make that person who they are. I guess. like I said, issues explaining it >_>

I wondered this a loooong time ago. I finally knew why I kept living: I want to inspire this world. Through my work, whatever it is, I want to spark inspiration in the minds of others.

Happy new year.

I game, therefore I am.

That summarises my entire existence right there.

Ah, but do you only live off the creations of others? Does your life itself have any meaning? ;) Just a thought for you!

Thankyou, you really did make a lot of sense, and you're obviously very wise :)

Though with your first statement:

The reason for living? wouldn't that necessarily be the answer to life, the universe, and everything as well?
I'm kind of assuming everyone is viewing this topic as totally subjective. Your life is what it means to you! :) After all, we live within our own minds, why not be the master of them?

Everything is a random chaotic mess. I live to look after myself and get what enjoyment I can out of this short life. There's no grand plan, no destiny, no definite answer.

You get born, you die. What happens in between is up to you.

I also create games. As well as the occasional AMV (currently working on one atm) when I'm bored. But gaming is my sustenance, it's what keeps me sane and moving forward.

Make an positive impact on as many people as possible and make people think about things. Well.. I say 'make' but I probably should say encourage... Also do as much good as you can and achieve as much as possible, but make sure you enjoy it.

My life philosophy is... nonexistent.

I exist because - haven't you had the talk? That's the reason.

I live because of curiosity coupled with caution. I'm curious as to what will happen in my life time, and I don't want to off myself because I don't know what lies after death.

The reason for my continued existence is to bring happiness to as many people as I can.
No matter the cost to myself, it is my duty to make sure others have a happy life.
It is my master's wish that I do so, and I happily follow her orders.
Well, that's my reason. Well, I have one other reason, but that is mine to know, and perhaps one or two others know <3
Maybe just one <3
