I can't be arsed of reading through every single remark (sorry folks, I read some and everyone raises some good points), but mine is this.

A badass secondary character, who you really like, will proclaim: "The new generation will be superior to us". Said new generation is the douche of a protagonist, or his retarded friends, who no way in hell should EVER come close, skill-wise, to the character saying this. But, using the Protagonist Powers (trademark) he will. Even though it might make no sense.

though i agree with alot of the examples posted by people, and i certainly find myself questioning my very own taste for anime, why do i still like it? , meh i dont know.
perhaps because there are still some very good ones around, or i'm just too tolerant of the cliche' then again, even other media have their own established cliches , hollywood is riddled with em as well.
even western games, like the skimpy armor in many fantasy Rpgs and games, WTH i want to see a female using a practical armor for once, or a main character that isnt 80% muscle or his arm muscles are larger than his whole damn head.. heh

Pointless overdramatic soliloquies about some event in the past, like how their/parents/lover/child was killed/raped/kidnapped.

No one ever turns away from the person who asked them the question to talk about that. Especially if it goes on for 3 minutes.

I could just link to tvtropes rather than elaborate all the tiresome cliches that I found in a lot of anime. It's not so bad that some shows have some cliches, its that it seems that a vast majority of animes shows uniformly include a huge number of cliches and it gets very annoying fast. I haven't watched anime in a long time, not because I hate the art style, but because take show A and you can pretty much guarantee that shows quite a few of the same "quirks" as shows B through Z.

I liked Cowboy Bebop because it deviated enough from the norm even though it did have its own flaws and I would assume that some one not accustomed to watching anime would find it much easier to enjoy.

- Annoying fanservice. Unlike most people, I will be the first to admit that a bit of fanservice doesn't necessarilly hurt a show. But when it is done frequently and/or in a "in your face" manner, it starts to get annoying even when you are the intended audience....especially when you are the intended audience. I can't recall her name, but there is a female character in Bleach who's breasts are so enormous that you literally have trouble paying attention to the show.

I hate when a show with a good idea is ruined by being childish or perverted.
Seikon no Qwaser is the best example. I loved the idea of characters each having their own element from the periodic table, but I couldn't watch more than five minutes without wanting to pull my hair out from the obsession with breasts.
Echi. My god the Echi in some anime can cause me to almost throw up. Gurren Laggen is a massive example of this. For something even worse try Negima. I am currently forcing myself to read the god-awful manga for a reason I can't remember. Maybe I'm schizophrenic and my other me is a sadist.
I'm onboard with this as well. Anime is broad enough that anyone can find something they enjoy if they give it a chance, but then there's the wierd stuff that the more fringe die hard fans enjoy which you really can't explain to anyone else. I hate it when this so called "fan service" invades what could otherwise be quality anime or manga, especially when they go out of there way to intentionally tease with it while also keeping it PG, as if they're now accepting the Western "bare boobies are bad!" attiutude. You get older stuff like Ranma 1/2 that would have nudity, but it was always treated as a gag with a 'there's nothing wrong with this' type mature attitude. So in a sense they've simultanously increased their censorhip sensitivity while becoming less mature.

Basically im going to talk about alot of naime cliches and why they make sence

1. Big Eyes: have you ever seen a anime character that had realistic eye size? No you haven't because if their eyes were drawn to size they would have way to much dead space on their face and it would look creepy ive seen several pictures of anime characters with normal eyes and it isn't worth it.

2. Big Boobs: Japanese people have always drawn things to be as beautiful as they can(unless there supposed to be ugly for some reason)and in the modern day big boobs are considered hot. They will stop making characters with big boobs once people stop liking boobs but that isn't going to happen soon.

3. Fan Service: see above. its the same with boobs they will stop putting it in once people stop liking looking under girls skirts and crap.

4. Filler: Filler in a necessary evil. if shows had no filler then we would either have to wait for months while the manga catches up to a point that they can start making more episodes or they would have to wait till the manga was done but if they wait for the manga to finish a lot less people would watch the show because they know everything before it happens.

5. Crazy hair color/styles: Have you ever though about how many hair colors humans have naturally amongst all races. There's not many and most races only have blond and black hair, blond, and red is at the base genetic level only in white people. If you combined this lack of hair colors with the lack of a lot of hairstyles and that most hairstyles look the same once you animeise them it would mean a lot of characters in the show would be walking around with what looks like THE EXACT SAME HAIR. Do you really want that?

6. Religious(especially christian)Symbolism: The Japanese know that Christianity is the biggest religion in the world representing 1/4 to 1/3 of the worlds populous, and they know that their anime is going to be shown around the world so they have to use religious themes most people understand or recognize. If they didn't use Christianity and instead used some other religion most people wouldn't get it without some long and boring explanation of everything.

7. Anime Characters look white: as posted in a video in some post before me they dont look white its that they lack any form of stereotypical face features and look like no one race and when that happens our brains automatically categorize them as whatever race we are. so its not that they are white its that there not stereotypically asian.

8. Nose bleeds, and Sneezing when someone talks about you: The sneezing thing is a old time Japanese myth. The Nose bleed as has been said before is due to blood pressure rising when you see something erotic, it looks funny, and it would seem more out of place if some burly dude blushed all the time.

9. Relationships: a lot of anime characters dont have what we would call a good ability to talk to the opposite gender and that's just fine. If they could solver their relationship problems easily you would seriously cut out like half of the dam show. Also a lot of the time this happens the characters are teens or just out of their teens and its a long held stereotype that people in this age group act this way and also how many relationships have you had that you had a 100% ability to just walk up to some girl say you liked her and she just agreed and your relationship was perfect for all time.

I know these arnt all of them but i got many of the common ones down so yeah.

Also to make it clear i hate just about all these cliches im just pointing out why they are there.

One problem, I do watch serious anime. In fact that's all I watch nowadays
Lain, Ergo Proxy, Ghost in the Shell SAC (all the movies), Evangelion, and Paranoia Agent.
Hopefully other gems will come to the US.

My reference to "friendship conquers all" applies to child-teen targeted anime (which is consumed like crazy here,to the point where people in their 20s come to cons in Naruto costumes!). I think most of the things that take off in the US are run of the mill garabage that easy to sell.

This is sadly linked to the naive concept that cartoons are only for young people and many people outside Japan have no idea of the potential of the medium and how diverse it is.

HAI! I AM JA-PA-NEEZ VOICE ACTRESS RIKA RIKAMOTO! I SOUND LIKE EVERY OTHER JAPANESE FEMALE VOICE ACTOR! I'M ALSO AN ABHORRENT SINGER! I'M 25 AND SOUND LIKE A 5 YEAR OLD! TEEHEEHEE *wink, jiggle*

Face facts, kid. You like dopey, moaning girlymen and screeching harpy-women because you fear actual emotion, dialect, and variety in your voices.
I'd call you the reason every anime is reskinned and released 10 more times under new titles, but I already know how the Japanese view weeaboos. And it's quite funny, actually.

Now like I said, o-tard, go learn some Japanese instead of reading your inaccurate, wooden fansubs and bland, half-translated official subs. As they say: dubs have gotten better since the 80s, but subs always stay the same. :3

Fillers. Oh the many filler episodes they make just pisses me off to know end.The one on Bleach that I believe is still going on has lasted long enough to get its own season it's so long.
Haha, I always get a kick out of people who get pissed off at "fillers". Fillers exist for a very specific reason, which if you watch Gintama was outlined very nicely in one of the episodes (can't remember which). Basically, when you're basing an anime off an ongoing manga series, you're comparing a 16-20 page/5 minutes to read comic to a 20 minute animated show. These do not run at the same speed, the animated series runs at a faster pace and if left alone will catch up and overtake the official manga storyline. So they have three choices:

1. Let the anime catch up and split off into an entirely different storyline (Full Metal Alchemist)
2. Drag out each animated episode so that it directly matches the manga episode, usually by having riducously long recaps, excessive and unecessary flashbacks, full episodes of grunting power ups, etc, all of which greatly degraid the quality of the show (As seen in Bleach, Naruto, DBZ respectively).
3. Take a break from the main storyline and introduce supplimentary story archs, possibly featuring little seen secondary characters to provide more depth to the overall story.

I mean seriously, what do you expect them to do? And how the hell do people get so upset when rather than following the storyline from the manga that they already know they're given free additional content?
