My favourite part has the nicest town in the Wasteland. Me and Dogmeat came across these three intact suburban houses in the wasteland. I crouched and sneaked inside, prepared for raider killing and looting. I was surprised when I walked into the house and was greeted by a friendly balding chap in a red sweater.

The house was home to a small family who seemed completely oblivious to the whole end of the world thing. In fact, them seemed like the happy, perfect sort of family you'd find in any home in the 1950s. The mother stayed at home and cleaned, the father went out everyday to work, and the son was to take up his dads job one day. Rather puzzled, I went to the house across the road, and found the same thing. A mother, a father, and there sweat daughter, all living in blissful ignorance of the nukes. It gave me the willys. Finally I checked the last house in the street, where a small, crazy old man lived.

"They're murders! They're crazy! Get out of town while you still can!" He kept saying. It was pretty damn weird.

So, finally, I decided to do a little investigating. The boy told me his father and the man next door always went in the shed or the basement to do their work. I check both doors and found they were locked. So, I pick pocketed the father while he was asleep, then headed down stairs and few the door to the basement.

The basement was full of mutilated dead body's, skeleton and fridges full of "strange meat". It looked pretty delicous, so I pocket some for later. After that I was pretty keen to get out of there. Sneaking back out stairs me and dog meat tiptoed across the hall and out the front door...where we met the both sets of parents.

"Alright stranger. Ya been pocking around where it ain't ya buisness?"

"Me?...No. I was just leaving..."

"Alright people. I think we know where I next meal is coming from." And thats when they started shooting me. They put up a pretty good fight. Both wives kept stabing Dogmeat while the fathers hung back with hunting rifles. I took care the of both mothers with the combat shotgun, then turned it on the men who fell shortly afterwards.

So yeah, that's pretty much the strangest experience I've had in the Wasteland. Was pretty damn cool though.

That and find the Oasis the "FUCK YOU" door.

I remember when I first went into Vault 106, which is the one with the psychoactive drugs released in the air filtration system. I got freaked out about the Vault 101 hallucinations and the computer room

a funnier moment was when i went into a building to loot it, i found a robot on a circle platform with a computer on the wall, i acrivate the computer and chose the option for it to read a bedtime story, the robot got up, floated into the remains of some kids' bedroom and started saying a bedtime story to a burnt skeleton
I want to find this building, its a reference to There Will Come Soft Rains.

Seriously, when it went into the children's room and recited that poem it creeped the hell out of me. But yeah... I'd have to say my most surprising Fallout 3 moment wasn't so much surprising as it was annoying. I was doing the Wasteland Survival Guide quest and was asked to go into Minefield. I go in and immediately someone opens fire on me. After some looking around I notice a fellow by the name of Arkansas with a sniper rifle. I also notice some rocks over-looking his perch.

So I left town, went around the rocks, shot Arkansas in the back of the head with my sniper rifle, looted his corpse and completed the quest. When I got back I was quite tempted to shoot Moira Brown in the face for lying to me.
Could you provide a link?
And on the topic of minefield I found the quest pretty easy, then I fast travel to megaton and my game froze. It goes without saying that I was pretty pissed.

Easy. When, after having busted my ass to broker a peace between the ghouls and the residents of Tenpenny Tower, I hear over the radio how apparently after I'd left the ghouls rose up and killed all the human residents, taking the place over for themselves. Oh, and I was taking the blame for the whole fiasco. That definitely caught me by surprise. Surprised and outraged. Marched right back there with a mind full of murder and set things right.

We made a deal, Roy.
*shotgun'd!*
YOU DON'T BREAK THE FUCKING DEAL, ROY!!
I really hate Tenpenny tower.
I have a Mesiah complex when I play Fallout, so far I find it very difficult to be the bad guy, and when I am I always make sure to have a save ready so after I've had my fun I can go back to being Jesus of the Wastes. But that bloody tower...theres just nothing you can do to make it right there.

Tenpenny is a corrupt douche who deserves death, as is Burke.
The guards are all dicks, especially the chief.
All the residents are bigoted snobs.

And normally I take a very positive attitude to ghouls, helping them whenever I can (probably influeneced a lot by my first ever interaction with one, Gob, and how nice he was to me when I was nice to him). But Roy Phillips...damn, its getting me angry just writing about it. He is just as bad as Tenpenny in my eyes.

The perfect solution for me would be to kill everyone in the tower, then head into the subway and kill all the ghouls down there too. But unfortunatly, having tried this, it results in such a massive karma drop that I literally went from Jesus of the Wastes to Hitler and Stalin's secret love child so fast it was silly.

Fuckin' tower :<

I've been playing The Pitt recently, and I had a pretty surprising moment today -

I was in the abandoned factory in the Steelyard looking for ingots. I got to the locked closet with the skeleton of the manager of the factory back from before the War. I read his journal on the computer, where he described how robots were brought in to replace the factory workers. They tried to organize a strike, but they were all massacred by the robots. He locked himself in the closet, hoping to survive somehow. I remember he wrote "I heard the familiar clanking of a Protectron in the hallway outside..." Right when I came out of looking at the computer, I heard this clanking sound out in the hallway... I got chills, even though the Protectron was friendly since I had a passcard. I'm pretty sure he spawns out there right after you read the journal - awesome how they designed it that way.

I was helping Sydney find the Declaration of Independence and was trying to keep her alive. I remembered a trap that I had avoided on the way to find her, so I went ahead and shot the meat-chain thing away so that she wouldn't kill herself. We then walked over the tripwire (because I had disarmed the trap) and the grenade that was also hooked up to the trap exploded and killed her.

When Fawkes told me that no, he wouldn't step inside the lethal room filled with radiation, when in fact he would survive easily and I would get toasted in an instant.

Bastard.

hmmmm, for me it was when the alien space craft exploded over my head. I had no idea what was going on! There was just this explosion, and then all this debris!

The best part was, this all occured when i was in the middle of a fire fight with some raiders, so at first I thought one of em pulled a missile launcher on me or something!

The first time I played, basically right after leaving the vault, I started exploring until I came to a destroyed truck. I figured I could find something useful in it, so I was about to go in when a super mutant walks out with a friggin' minigun. Needless to say it did not end well

I was looking for Dogmeat in the junkyard. First time I've played the game while actually going out of my way to look for him.

So, I find him. As Dogmeat walks up to me, he managed to push a car with some kind of magical force field glitch. The car ended up several feet away.

I was very impressed.

Honorable Mention is when you meet President John Henry Eden.
Am I the only person on the face of this planet that totally saw that coming?
On topic: The ending (or the would be ending before broken steel)

First place goes to when I first saw the Mall. Everything from the monuments to the museums, and especially when I saw Lincoln with his head back on his shoulders. It was destroyed yet still moving and beautiful in its own right.

Honorable mention goes to Little Lamplight. I was shocked to find out such young children were able to not only survive, but thrive as much as they did. I would never expect children younger than their teens to be able to have a society on par with Megaton, and possibly just below Rivet City in terms of development of the world around them.
