All anthems FAIL in comparison to this one.

Indeed, even not being Russian it fills you with a certain...pride is the wrong word, it's incredibly powerful and rousing though. Seeing as they don't need it anymore, can we switch it for God Save the Queen?

For england I'd choose that or Land of hope and glory. It's a shame we have some quite good songs which you could use but just have that quite boring badly sounding god save the queen instead. Sad face :(

Then again, We shouldn't change our anthem. Why, because we would get some crappy pop song instead and you know it.

The Soviets have the best, hands down. I don't mind the Star Spangled Banner, though.
+1 to that, any anthem with exploding rockets at least deserves a look in.

I really don't like Americas national anthem, Its just about war and killing british (americas favorite past time). Id change it to america the beautiful. corny song but at least its about the natural beauty of the country.

I think Appalachian Spring (granted it has no words) or America the Beautiful would be better anthems. For one, America the Beautiful would be more accessible, our current anthem is ridiculously challenging to sing.

I'm happy with the Scottish National Anthem. "Flower of Scotland" is an awesome song.

As for the British National Anthem, I think Billy Connolly had the right idea...

I'd willingly stand when I heard the theme from the Archers.

Hmm... what? The version sung at most events just goes on about how bloody wonderful their flag is. See the whole 4 verses are apparently very rarely sung and a German spy in WW2 was found out for how he suspiciously knew the entire anthem so well to spite only the first verse being sung or needed to be known by most citizens.

And what about the lyrics of God Save the Queen:

God save our gracious Queen,
Long live our noble Queen,
God save the Queen:
Send her victorious,
Happy and glorious,
Long to reign over us:
God save the Queen.

O Lord, our God, arise,
Scatter her enemies,
And make them fall.
Confound their politics,

Frustrate their knavish tricks,
On Thee our hopes we fix,
God save us all.

Thy choicest gifts in store,
On her be pleased to pour;
Long may she reign:
May she defend our laws,
And ever give us cause
To sing with heart and voice
God save the Queen

Particularly find interesting the part where we call for political unrest in our enemies, as nowadays that's the exact opposite we want, we want them stable and not prone to extremism. It's certainly what we want in Afghanistan and Iraq and I think with hindsight it was probably best not to wish political unrest on Germany after the First World War when the Nazis eventually took hold of power.

As an American, I've always felt that our national anthem was a bit...lacking. Personally, I think something like this would be a much better indicator of America's outlook for itself and the rest of the world.

I've always reckoned that England should use Land of Hope and Glory when it's just England doing something (akin to how the other Home Nations have an anthem they use). That or (as the Big Yin said) singing the theme to the Archers.

Yeah Land of Hope and Glory would work well too, it's a good rousing song :)

And I doubt very much we'd get a pop song if we changed our anthem. Anthems and that kind of thing probably has to be approved by the Royals, and I dont see them letting that kind of shit go down :p

That track is pure, unadulterated awesome. Only the USA could ever pull it off as their anthem. It's just soooo American.

Hahaha the Archers theme would be great, in a cringey kind of way. My Ma had it on all the time when I was a kid, to the point where as soon as the theme came on I would just leave the room, so I'm not sure I could endure it for long :p

And yeah, as I said in the OP, you Scots easily have the best national anthem around.

*jealousy*

I despise the British national anthem and refuse point blank to sing it - I neither believe on god nor the monarchy and think that of all the people in the UK with the right to claim divine help the person with a cushy job for life and a 24 hour armed guard is right at the bottom of the list.

I equally would neither bow (nor the girl thing I can't spell) to the Queen, although an incline of the head in notice to how many years she has served doing boring head of state bullshit might be OK. When Charlie comes in he can shove his crown up his arse (ditto his descendants).

I hate "God Save the Queen" and am embarrassed by it. Rule Britannia is out because we have't exactly ruled the waves in a while. Land of Hope and Glory might be OK.

Well I'm Irish, and I believe our national anthem was written somewhere else by an Aussie, or something. Not quite sure.
Eh? The Irish anthem(The english version A Soldiers Song) was written by Peadar Kearney and Patrick Heeney(both Irish) and was translated into Irish(Amhrán na bhFiann the version we use)by Liam Ó Rinn.No Aussies were involved as far as I know

It's a perfectly good anthem in my opinion.Don't see any need to change it

I've obviously been misinformed can't trust anyone these days. But the fact it was written in Eng and translated annoys me...

I just don't like it. Too much emphasis on war and bloodshed. The thing I've always liked about our history, and most of the rebel songs is that they aren't about fighting. They're about its impact. Its like the difference between the Nationalist and Loyalist murals up North. The Nationalist ones are mostly of normal scenes with a newspaper or some other way to show a date, and its a day something important to the cause happened. While the Loyalist ones are mostly lads with guns and the red hand of Ulster...

Yes, our ancestors fought, but more than that they suffered. To glorify bloodshed in a country torn apart by violence for so long is disturbing. Also, ironic considering we're neutral.

What, all this talk of a new British anthem and nobody's brought up Heil Britania from Code Geass? Okay so it hasn't got a show in hell but I'd laugh...

Anyway, for my own anthem, it's kinda funny. New Zealand's is sung in both English and Maori and while I was never terribly keen on the former (I remember the words to an age-old parody better than the real thing), I have to say I've recently discovered I quite like the latter.

It's not like I understand a whole lot of Maori myself, I just think it sounds better.
