Your National Anthem: Do you like it, and what would you change it to?

Norway's "birthday" as it is called, i feel compelled to post my national anthem, called "Yes, we love this country" and it is THE best anthem ever, since all anthems really needs to be changed, but Norway's is perfect

I'm kinda confused about Ireland's anthem though. Is Amhrán na bhFiann your official national anthem and if so why do they sing Ireland's call at rugby games instead?

As far as I know Ahran na bhFiann is sung at rugby games. I may be mistaken though, i dont watch so I couldnt tell you. Every sporting event I have seen has ahran na bhfiann sung.

I agree. Though I would realisticly consider changing some of the wording. Like removing the slavery thing. Other than that I think it fits America very well. I just hope that we can "live up" to the song. So I prepose we fix our shit before we adopt it.

I like Amhran na bhFiann and would never change it for the likes of "the fields of athenry", thats a song involving two characters in one historical event so id say its a bit limited for a nations anthem imo.

Ah right, thanks for clearing that up. I suppose it's fair enough if you have a mixed team and supporters, even if it isn't as good as Amhran na bhFiann.

And fair point with regards to Fields of Athenry. It's a good song, but as you say, a bit too specific for the purposes of representing an entire nation and it's history.

If I were to choose a song that captured England to be our anthem, I would probably choose something by the Kinks. Victoria, Village Green Preservation Society, Waterloo Sunset.

There are songs that I think capture England better (something by Pulp or Blur for example), but a national anthem is no place for cynicism.

Oh hell yeah! I didnt know anyone else here liked/ was even aware of the Kinks. They are very English, and those songs you mention are very nostalgic which is kinda suited to a national anthem.

Personally, I think we would be better off using instrumental versions, as I believe that lyrics detract from the song itself...

I don't like the English national anthem but then I don't like Jerusalem either. I'd change it to the Holst piece "I vow to thee, my country". Which is the slow bit in Jupiter. Holst was at least British, and it's the only anthemic piece I can think of that isn't just dull.
