The best intro i´ve seen is Legacy of Kain:Soul Reaver.

It tells the origin story, sets the mood, defines the character and the goal he must face all in just a few minutes. The CG clip was very good at the time (and still holds up nicely). The badass theme song and the superb voice acting are the icing on the cake. Perfect.

Final Fantasy VIII also has a badass intro and is my second favourite. The psone era had pretty good intros.

No doubt about it. The music, the art style, the scenes. They all fit together without spoiling the game and it's story!

[sub][sub]though, my opinion might be slightly biased, as it is my favourite game of all time...[/sub][/sub]
This, without a doubt in my mind, is the greatest intro! The fact that it's followed by one of the greatest games is also a nice +!

Good morning and welcome to the Black Mesa Transit System. This automated train is provided for the security and convenience of the Black Mesa Research Facility personnel. The time is 8:47 AM. Current topside temperature is 93 degrees with an estimated high of 105. The Black Mesa Compound is maintained at a pleasant 68 degrees at all times. This train is inbound from Level 3 Dormitories to Sector C Test Labs and Control Facilities. If your intended destination is a high-security area beyond Sector C, you will need to return to the central transit hub in Area 9 and board a high-security train. If you have not yet submitted your identity to the retinal clearance system, you must report to Black Mesa personnel for processing before you will be permitted into the high-security branch of the transit system. Due to the high toxicity of material routinely handled in the Black Mesa Compound, no smoking, eating or drinking are permitted within the Black Mesa transit system. Please keep your limbs inside the train at all times. Do not attempt to open the doors until the train has come to a complete halt at the station platform. In the event of an emergency, passengers are to remain seated and await further instruction. If it is necessary to exit the train, disabled personnel should be evacuated first. Please stay away from electrified rails and proceed to an emergency station until assistance arrives. A reminder that the Black Mesa Hazard Course Decathlon will commence this evening at 1900 hours in the Level 3 facility. The semi-finals for high-security personnel will be announced in a separate, secure-access transmission. Remember: more lives than your own may depend on your fitness. Do you have a friend or relative who would make a valuable addition to the Black Mesa team? Immediate openings are available in the areas of Materials Handling and low-clearance security. Please contact Black Mesa personnel for further information. If you have an associate in the background of Theoretical Physics, Biotechnology or other high-tech disciplines, please contact our Civilian Recruitment Division. The Black Mesa Research Facility is an equal opportunity employer. A reminder to all Black Mesa personnel: regular radiation and biohazard screenings are a requirement of continued employment in the Black Mesa Research Facility. Missing a scheduled urinalysis or radiation checkup is grounds for immediate termination. If you feel you have been exposed to radioactive or other hazardous materials in the course of your duties, contact your Radiation Safety Officer immediately! Work safe, work smart. Your future depends on it. Now arriving at Sector C Test Labs and Control Facilities. Please stand back from the automated door and wait for the security officer to verify your identity. Before exiting the train, be sure to check your area for personal belongings. Thank you and have a very safe and productive day.

Not only that but the exposition text before it, the rain. The whole thing...

Actually I bought a PS2 only for DMC3, after watching and AMV on a disc coming with a PC gaming journal.

Mass Effect 2, by far was the best opening to a game I've ever seen, I am a huge Mass Effect fan and refused to watch any of the previews for 2. If I did the shock wouldn't have been there, but there was sooooooo much shock in the opening I lost it. It left me with soooo many questions, all of which were answered.

Fallout 3, no doubt about it, not only is it an amazing way of setting up the story, you actually get a feel for you and your dad growing up in the vault
just so awesome.
even if you just count the little cinematic before you actually start the game, the "I don't want to set the world on fire" bit, it is so amazing, it completely encapsulates the wasteland in a nutshell

It's nothing without the music.Incidently:
War. War never changes.
The Romans waged war to gather slaves and wealth. Spain built an empire from its lust for gold and territory. Hitler shaped a battered Germany into an economic superpower.

But war never changes.

In the 21st century, war was still waged over the resources that could be acquired. Only this time, the spoils of war were also its weapons: Petroleum and Uranium. For these resources, China would invade Alaska, the US would annex Canada, and the European Commonwealth would dissolve into quarreling, bickering nation-states, bent on controlling the last remaining resources on Earth.

In 2077, the storm of world war had come again. In two brief hours, most of the planet was reduced to cinders. And from the ashes of nuclear devastation, a new civilization would struggle to arise.

A few were able to reach the relative safety of the large underground Vaults. Your family was part of that group that entered Vault Thirteen. Imprisoned safely behind the large Vault door, under a mountain of stone, a generation has lived without knowledge of the outside world.

Life in the Vault is about to change.
And
am Andrew Ryan and I am here to ask you a question:
Is a man not entitled to the sweat of his brow?

No, says the man in Washington; it belongs to the poor.
No, says the man in the Vatican; it belongs to God.
No, says the man in Moscow; it belongs to everyone.

I rejected those answers. Instead, I chose something
different. I chose the impossible. I chose...

Rapture.

A city where the artist would not fear the censor.
Where the scientist would not be bound by petty morality.
Where the great would not be constrained by the small.
And with the sweat of your brow,
Rapture can become your city as well.

Naw, that's not the nerdiest thing. I know the entire speech word-for-word, off-by-heart.

Half-Life 2, now that is a good opening. "Wake up, Missster Freeman. Wake up and... smellll the assssshes."
Borderlands was awesome too. And ME2.
Quite a few good intros, actually.

Bioshock probably wins it, but Zelda: OoT has impressed me for years. So many other intros try to be flashy with high-impact graphics and sound. OoT knows it's badass, and just plays the Ocarina a ton to clips of a horse running around. Yet some how that is badass in itself.
The song that plays during the OOT intro is my favourite melody of all time. It is like a sound beyond nostalgia, because it still retains the quality it had the first time I heard it.

It's a split between the Warhammer 40k Dawn of War I and II openings, it'd be hard to top them.
Here's the two videos:
