Sometimes a video game really isn't that bad and all it takes is one little thing to throw you off. For instance with me, if the game just isn't even remotely challenging, no matter how good the rest of it is, I won't like it.

Red Dead Redemption is probably one of the most disappointing games I've ever played because of this fact, that and auto aiming which is a huge negative in my eyes.

Anyways, what would you say are some of your pet peeves, the little details in a game that have really managed to throw you off?

For me it's when they throw in crappy sections that had nothing to do with the game previously. Like putting in an on-rails shooting part in what's normally a free roaming 3rd or 1st person shooter. These parts are normally half baked and have ruined a few games for me.

I'm pretty sure you can turn auto aim off.

As for me, a bad looking HUD can ruin a game.

Just cause 2 and F.E.A.R. 2 have lame HUD's

Assassin's creed 2 has an O.K. HUD, but it sucks compared to the original assassin's creed's HUD.

My other pet peeve is when you play a game like Just Cause 2 where you spend your time blowing sh*t up, and then the rubble and bodies fade away out of existence. I want to see my mess stay there. Also in F.E.A.R. 2 the blood spatters fade really quick; I wish they didn't fade at all.

Running toward the camera.

This has worked in exactly one game that I've played: Uncharted 2. Every other game seems hellbent on using it as a jump puzzle where you can't see the jump until it's right in front of you.

When a game takes the camera out of your hands to show you that you've solved a puzzle or something even when it's painfully obvious. I know I've solved it, you don't need to tell me what I already know.

That, I want to see the results of my carnage, it's most jarring when you actually see the bodies and rubble fade right into front of you.
They couldn't at least have waited for me to leave the area?

I said it before but I hate when a puzzle or obstacle makes no sense.
I have both a rocket launcher and a gun that fires nukes... WHY DO I NEED A KEY TO OPEN A WOODEN DOOR?!?!?!

The ability to pick objects up without using your hands (Fallout 3, Fallout New Vegas, Half Life 2 and Portal.).

I forgot to mention that I hate it when you look down in an FPS and you don't see your body or feet.

Curious, but was Gears 2 one of those games?

I also have that similar pet peeve and those rail shooting sections really annoyed me.

Camera angles you have no control over - because whenever the devs get to choose one, it always sucks ass.

Screwing with movement controls. Left stick is for moving forward, backward and strafing to the sides. Right stick is for aiming/camera control. If you make a game screwing with that control setup, you are doing it wrong. I'm looking at you, default controls to SOCOM I and II.

Any game with collectable orbs of some kind just sitting on the ground waiting to be picked up. That stuff drives me up the wall.

Bad sound tracks. The music is (usually) a minor part of any game, but bad music really saps all of my enjoyment and ruins the ride.

I would have to say the thing that bugs me the most is the smallest things since I can get bored fast. My main peeve is when I get really into an action scene and then there is some flashback that interrupts it. I'm like 'I was just killing someone!'. Very irritating.

Bad dialogue in RPGs. Whether it's in the voice acting or in the writing, it almost always throws me out of the game. When it goes into Narm territory however, that's an entirely different story.

Trying to avoid surrealism in stupid ways. Like in Crysis, where you can see your hand reaching out to grab something, rather than just the plain old pick-it-up-instantly that works so beautifully well in all the games beforehand.
Or pretty much the entire concept of Modern Warfare...

Face it devs, surrealism owns. Play Sauerbraten if you don't believe me ^^

The pause to heal mechanic that has become common. Uncharted was bad for it, Drake could walk through a hail of AK47 fire, duck behind a wall, take two breaths and be fully healed ready to go. Just leaves you feeling too much like a terminator. A guy wearing a t-shirt and jeans should be a bit more worried by bullets...
