Ridley Scott still owns my movie going soul for now, however.
Seriously... people need to have faith in this. The guy knows how to tell a damn story. I would go see a movie about a Vacuum Salesman if he directed it. Alien, Blade Runner, G.I. Jane, Gladiator, Black Hawk Down, Matchstick Men? This guy is one of the only directors currently relevant who can take a story like Robin Hood and make it relevant in today's film world. Have a little faith and optimism people.
Thank Christ I'm not alone on this point.

I really liked Gladiator. So i'll watch it. But in the end i will hate it for not being faithful to the story which is really sad :p. I'll just think of it as something not at all realated to Robin Hood then it'll probaly be a decent movie
Edit: OMG the trailer made my day! I lol'd at 0:38

There was talk a few years back of a Robin Hood film in which Hood was portrayed as the villain. I thought it was this one, and that would have been interesting. From the trailers, however, it would seem that I'm mistaken.
that's actually a great idea, but I think you are right, there's no way Hollywood would make a mainstream movie with such a novel character arc.

It fills me with a tiny bit of rage that people are coming down on this movie before it comes out... if it were like... directed by Michael Bay, then fine... but it's Ridley @#$!ing Scott. Show me a movie that he has made that hasn't at least been "okay" even pushing "good"... it just doesn't happen. Plus, given the angle they're taking with the story, there's nothing in this film that makes me think it will be anything less than "very good."

News Flash: Every story has been done.

There's a reason these stories are told so many times over. They are good stories. I think with the budget, cast and director they've lined up for this film, they can finally do the story justice and make it current to this generation of film-goers.

Hah, tell that to the Avatar haters :p

No matter how well you do something, people will always find faults. You just has to hope that the vocal ones are the minority if it's your stuff that's being slagged :D

Directed by Ridley Scott and starring Russel Crowe, both of which are good at what they do. The trailer gave me mixed feelings (I declare him....AN OUTLAAAAAAAAAAW) but I think it can still be good. The trailer made it look like the sequel to Gladiator, which apparently is a bad thing, but I'm still gonna see it. Even Ridley Scott's "bad" movies are above average when compared to everything else.

It's either going to be bad, or FUCKING AWESOME!

Look at the trailer. No god-damn faggots in tights here!

Also, I'm probably the only person here who though "Mount and blade movie!"

I've seen the Robin Hood film display over in Nottingham Castle, and to be honest it wasn't that good. It was just a load of costumes and some interviews from Disk 2.

The film itself looks like Gladiator set in England. And even then only half in England. It does not look like Robin Hood at all.

Like 300, but in England. All together now:
Sheriff: This is robbery, this is MADNESS!
Robin: Madness... madness... THIS IS SHERWOOD FOREST!!!!!!!!

In all seriousness, not as good as the animated or Erol Flynn (I don't think I'm spelling that right) one, but worth watching in the ironic sense.

I'm cautiously optimistic about the film, as it has Russell Crowe and Ridley Scott -- both of whom are competent at their worst (I didn't like Kingdom of Heaven, for example, but I still thought it was well-made). I'm going to have to watch this if only to see why the hell it looks like a bunch of soldiers are landing at what looks like Seven Sisters to me (although in the movie it's probably meant to represent Dover). My guess is that they're probably reinforcements John called in from France, but I don't know. It's confusing.

I don't think it will be good as Robin Hood Men in tights but that is the best Robin Hood movie if you ask me.

and now we get people like you (no offence) who think those are the real facts and don't know the truth.
Let's hit the brakes on that one. I knew about connections with Sarmatians (but I expected a reenactment of Roman campaigns in Brittany) when Arthur came out. And I know enough about possible origins for Robin Hood. After reading your post, I think you're probably right about this movie. But nothing about the trailers I've seen screams 'historical accuracy' or hints at a serious treatment of the subject. I'm still expecting the same kind of missed opportunity that was King Arthur. If I had gotten a different vibe from the trailers, I may have realized they were going for historical accuracy.

There are other interpretations for a Robin Hood origin. For example, the legends may be a remembrance of guerrilla campaigns which were fought in England in the centuries following John, over succession. Names being substituted later from other legends or harvested from written histories. I guess bearing that in mind, and the tone of the trailer, prevented me from realizing they were going for historical accuracy. Thanks to you I see what they're going for, but I still predict a snooze-fest just like Arthur.

It just looks like Gladiator(not saying its a bad movie), but with the name Robin Hood pasted to it.

I liked gladiator. I'd watch it again with a weird retelling of English civil war.

Oh and I predict obscene historical license, not that I have a problem with that.
It's not the English civil war though. It's a fictional story of England during the third crusade.

The film looks like an overblown rubbish spectacle. Russell Crowe has a terrible accent, and everything else looks forced and contrived. That sorta worked in Gladiator, but Robin Hood is a different kettle of fish, and a different atmosphere. It's gonna be rubbish, but I'm enough people are curious enough for it to become a box office "hit"
(covering own tracks, can't appear stupid on the internet!)
I said English civil war, not The English Civil War.
Touche, I retract my comment!

Seriously though, while the film looks to have a high budget, and seems to have been produced well, it completely misses the point. The point of working class men fighting against a violent oppressor, and fighting for the people. Robin Hood is revolution. Robin Hood is Ewoks. Robin Hood is NOT a war story! And Cate Blanchet, talented actress though she may be, needs to stop with the period blockbuster films, she is getting very typecast. I will watch this film out of respect for some of Scott's back catalogue (in much the same way I watched Avatar), but like King Arthur or Kingdom of Heaven, this will be forgotten quickly, even if it is not critically slammed.

Russel Crowe will never surpass Errol Flynn unless he beats up guards with the carcass of a dead deer while walking into Nottingham Castle to tell Prince John that he personally intends to hand him his ass.

Marian: Why you speak treason!

Robin Hood: Fluently.

1. It'll be a historically accurate as Gladiator.
2. It'll be absolutely true to the myth/legend/folktale.
3. It won't be as good as Men in Tights.

All three will be true.

When I saw the trailer in the cinema, I seriously thought they were rereleasing Gladiator until they flashed the words 'Robin Hood' at the end. Easy formula. Rinse, repeat.

I will however, be amused to see if Russell Crowe carries a quiver stocked with phones.
