#1 The Art of Avoiding Fights, taught by Aikido practitioners also. Simple stuff like, take a step back, don't walk into dark alleyways, don't flash your jewelry, Diffuse the tension, negotiate, intimidate, run away.

#2 Running Away - Used by Samurai. When faced with a huge group of enemies, the Samurai runs, as they run, the group is scattered according the the fitness of the enemies, turn around, kill one or two and continue running, eventually they will give up or you can go back and kill them. I propose to take it to the ultimate step, just keep running.

#3 My Gun is bigger than your Gun. Pretty simple, if they have black belt, you have gun, if they have gun you have machine gun etc etc. Until all humans die from a black hole generator weapon.
Samurais had an old code of honor... They instead committed seppuku (The art of cutting your own liver out) before running away..

I have a black belt in Hapkido, so I could take care of myself, though in a real fight, I would just block the attack and tackle the guy fro some ground and pound. Also, I can swing a sword fairly well.

Remember, its not a confirmed kill unless the blood splashes your face.

if i couldnt get out of the situation id resort to a swift kicks and punches(ive done muay thai and tae-kwon-do at various stages in my life but not long enough to be confident i can fully defend myself) and then run away as soon as i had a chance

I would say a mix of Kenpo Karate (in which I have a black belt),Brazilian jui-jitsu, wrestling, and chokeholds. Either that or terminator invasion.

I don't really have any particular hand to hand style, prbably because I've never been in a fight. But I'm good with a sword and I know how to use one well.

My fav fighting Style:

Shooting at my enemies from quarter of a mile away with a high power rifle. Then calling in a precision air strike. Then getting 50 of my buddies armed to the teeth with as much body armour and weapons as they can carry then perform a rapid helicopter insertion to clear up the stragglers.

This is following the mantra of "Don't bring a knife to a gunfight... bring a rifle and at least 12 of your buddies armed with rifles too. Grenades as well."

Martial arts are great, but no substitute for overwhelming numbers and superior firepower.
I'm sure this will be really helpful when you're by yourself in an everyday setting. Maybe you should play less CoD 4.
Well have I been playing too much CoD 4? Or am I just looking at real life conflicts where battles are really fought and won rather than Tekken.

The point I was trying to make is why arbitrarily exclude weapons? Weapons being the tools for fighting.

I mean if humans never used tools we would not even be a small tribe of naked apes, we would be extinct! We as a species became the masters of this planet through the mastery of tools and co-operation in using those tools, when we started doing that 50'000 years ago we were unstoppable and our population has been growing and expanding roughly exponentially ever since.

So if I had to fight with no weapons and no friends... quite simply I wouldn't. I'd run away and plot a decisive retaliation or set an ambush.

I mean look at how the SAS handles close quarters fighting. In fact they practically pioneered it as in the 1970's it was considered suicide to fight in close quarters if guns were involved, but the SAS sparked a revolution in the armed forces of the world with their amazingly successful anti-terror raids such as aiding in the liberation of the Hijacked Lufthansa Flight 181 and breaking the Iranian Embassy Siege.

They did not depend on bare handed combat but a combination of explosive entry, sound+flash grenades and rapid-fire accurized submachine guns. So overwhelming the perception, senses and minds of the terrorists that they stood no chance.

To me bare handed martial arts have only limited application if you are ambushed when you least expect it by an unarmed or poorly armed foe, if you are the one attacking then you have time to prepare which means time to get the weapons and friends you need to maximise your chance of success.

Brawling. I've been told I'd make a decent boxer, I've been thinking about getting training.

Fighting dirty and hitting people with blunt objects is also acceptable, if I can punch someone in the throat and avoid getting bloody, I will.

I still have all my teeth and my nose isn't misshapen, so I'd say I'm doing alright with it.

I would like to learn Krav Maga, but I prefer Tang Soo Do. Tang Soo Do is a sister art to Taekwando reconstructed from traditional Korean martial arts with Chinese and Japanese influences on form. It generally focuses more on stance and kicks than Taekwando.

If it is a question of most efficient form of combat, then any of the more advanced martial combinations used by any of the world's special forces are the way to go. Neither flashy nor subtle, the key in any such amalgamation is rapid and efficient dispatch of your foes.

If it a question of preference without regard to utility, the Western tradition of fencing is my pick as it remains the only martial art that I could be considered proficient in. Though my USFA rank is quite low (E), I can at least rest assured that I could still reasonably best most people in the world in a sword duel, in spite of a near certainty that I will never be placed in such a situation.

Looks alright but,

I happen to prefer the "grab a hard and sharp object and bludgeon until they stop struggling" style of fighting. It has always worked for me.

War != street fighting.

The point I was trying to make is why arbitrarily exclude weapons? Weapons being the tools for fighting.
I hope you enjoy prison because that's where you're going to be if you decide to start carrying an assault rifle and hand grenades for self-defense.

To me bare handed martial arts have only limited application if you are ambushed when you least expect it by an unarmed or poorly armed foe, if you are the one attacking then you have time to prepare which means time to get the weapons and friends you need to maximise your chance of success.
More reality and less video games please. You are not going to be launching a military operation when some drunk takes a swing at you or when someone tries to mug you.
Well if we are talking about a drunk or some dumb confrontation in peaceful civilian life then I wouldn't fight them at all. What is the point? I'd just call the cops, they certainly take enough of my money in taxes I damn well am gonna use them if I'm entitled to. They are trained, armed and paid to deal with crap like this.

I mean when the hell did Escapist forums become a place to seek practical self-defence advice considering all legal ramifications? Especially when other topics have included "What is your preferred zombie killing weapon". It should be obvious to everyone that this forum topic is entirely speculative and not to be taken seriously.

Just look at the name of this website: The Escapist

Do you know what escapism means?

So excuse me Buzz Killington, I guess I do belong in jail for using a bit of freaking imagination in what is OBVIOUSLY a hypothetical scenario with no actual intentions, maybe I should have just been the 47th person to merely list their coolest looking martial art style instead of trying to introduce a new perspective.

You honestly think I'm serious about calling in an air strike against some drunken hobo who panhandles me?
