I listen to all of my oldies when I'm down; Bright Eyes, Space Oddity, Nights in White Satin and Stand by Me are good ones.
David Bowie. Love it.

Whenever I feel down, I try to cheer myself up with some upbeat stuff, so it's usually ska music (Aquabats and Reel Big Fish mostly). Also, Rancid cheers me up. Something about Tim Armstrong's voice on the album '...And Out Come the Wolves'...

Music that cheers me up: The whole "Stop Throwing Things Into My Pool" prank phone call.

Music that makes me sad: Sarah Mclaughlin.

Normally, when I'm feeling down I listen to the Goo Goo Dolls Dizzy Up the Girl (album), Bob Dylan's Highway 61 Revisited (album) or Counting Crows.

When I'm sad and I want a little laugh and just let my mind wander into my head, Voltaire does the trick.
If you like Voltaire, When You're Evil, Bomb New Jersey and Day of the Dead are awesome. The former especially.

I usually go for really cheesy happy hardcore these days. Listening to depressing music when you're upset is not such a good idea.
(Zoidberg voice) Hooray! (/Zoidberg Voice) another person who listens to Happy Hardcore, I thought I was the only one.
Anyway I dont have sad music, really, I dont. I got rid of all of my sad mp3's when I saw what they were doing to me. Now I only listen to up beat music, or metal (metal doenst count as sad because it makes me angry.)

I'm rarely very sad but these cheer me up no matter what my mood:
Zebrahead, Funeral for a Friend (ironic, given their name), and a song called Zeplike by Slightly Stoopid
That last song I highly recommend to anyone.

Happy hardcore would only serve to make me angry as well as sad, I like pretty much any genre with "core" in the name but chipmunk vocals are a big no.

Depending on how bad my mood is it'll either be (in ascending order of badness): Atari Teenage Riot, Converge, Harlots, Speedranch Janskynoise, Throbbing Gristle, Whitehouse and finaly this beast http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3O5Px3_RJ3w
