Now, I took about 5 minutes to think of this list. I will come back to change it if I feel like I forgot a game. The list is loosely based on the play time when it was new and how many times I have gone back to play the game.

5. Mass Effect 2
4. Zelda: Ocarina of Time
3. Fable III
2. Final Fantasy VII
1. Devil May Cry 3

Honorable Mentions: Hitman: Blood Money, Goldeneye 64, Black, Final Fantasy X, Sonic the Hedgehog 3, Assassins Creed II, Morrowind, Fallout 3, Banjo-Kazooie, Banjo-Tooie.

Just ask and I can give you justifications for the list.

What did you think of Napoleon? I've been playing alot of that lately, and I think it's great.a
Very, very solid game, but it suffers from its time period---it's just way too easy to win battles by lining up the troops in fortified positions and forcing the enemy to walk through a hail of bullets. Because of this the game tends to be too easy for an experienced strategy gamer---I won in a walk in my first campaign.

I must agree with you there - however, there isn't a complete lack of strategy. It is much more difficult on the harder settings, especially when playing as the Coalition. The French are just too powerful to face on land, so other means must be explored.

1. Chrono Trigger: To me perfect in every way, the story, the art style, the battle system, I can go on but I won't for your sake.
2. Final Fantasy VI: A lot like Chrono Trigger it's just brilliant, I think the story is the best of the series and I personally think the characters are some of the best.
3. Ocarina of Time: Best Zelda ever, enough said.
4. Metal Gear Solid 3: Best MGS I think, and again so unique, the battle with The End was enough to make it brilliant but when me and my friend played the game together he shocked me when he shot the End early, I didn't know you could do that. Great.
And I guess Mass Effect 2 I found the game amazing from the story to the characters, The game felt to me like the West's version of FFVI they have a sort of similar story with building a group to take down an enemy. Can't wait for ME3.

Curse you! narrowing it down to a mere 5 was downright painful

5. Diablo 2. While I couldn't stand it for much more than the 3rd act alone, I played this game for years online on bnet. It was the closest I'll ever get to playing a mmorpg, and though it doesn't have a single persistant world, it basically is one. I knew the items, and I knew the world. I knew how to ride the rushes to glitch a lvl 1 character into act 4 on hell difficulty, and I could rush someone else myself if they asked nicely. I knew how to ride the chaos runs from there to get past lvl 60 inside of a day easily, and 80 by the next. I still have fond memories of doing key runs with my bone necromancer, and those fun PvP matches with my friends. Sadly, all my gear is gone now, otherwise I'd be diving back in now.

4. Unreal Tournament. The first one was my first real FPS as a kid. I played it to death, and it taught me many skills that prepared me for the wider world of FPSs. It also taught me skills that were not-so-helpful when it came time to tackle the games where ammo conservation is important.

3. Pokemon RBY. Can't help but throw in first gen Pokemon. Followed Pokemon through all the games, and though I hold up 4th gen as unequivocally the best for the fact that it introduced wifi (Competitive online battling against people compares to the single player game in the same way chess compares to playing chutes and ladders with chess pieces. IE, a wholly different experience and yet infinitely better), I still consider the first gen games as being the ones whose single player mode I enjoyed the most.

2. Starcraft+Brood War. I spent most of my middle and high school years playing not much else. I would hop on and just enjoy UMS games all day. Bnet was also the best online game service I ever played on, and likely ever will. I added a new friend or two to my list nearly every day from the awesome people I met in this and diablo.

1. Sword of the Stars. Go here to learn why [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/326.255921-Sword-of-the-Stars-4x-Done-Right]. A genius once described it well as Space: Total War

oddly enough, not the massive deluge of Ocarinas of Time I would have expected. good sign?

anyway, currently :

1)Uncharted 2-too. much. fun! great action and one of the most perfect games i can think of. plus a rather enjoyable multiplayer!

2)Resident Evil 4-also too much fun. pulls off a pretty good atmosphere and is just plain satisfying to play. some of the set pieces, especially in the castle chapters are just awesome.

3)Final Fantasy X-The most straight up fun (seeing a pattern here?) game out of the entire series with a pretty good story and pretty good characters. also the final trek in zanarkand ruins is the best jrpg moment ever.

4)Shadow of the Colossus-the atmosphere (in this case, of bleak loneliness) is fantastic between the colossi fights and the colossi fights themselves are breath-taking and incredibly fun (except fucking laser turtle. i fucking hate laser turtle)

5)Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas-the best out of the old school ps2 era GTA games and the last major game before the GTA games forgot how to be wacky fun and started taking a much more realistic approach (not that this is bad, just different). also has some of the most hilarious dialogue ever written.

5-NBA 2k11
This is the best realistic sports game ever made, and the second best sports game in general. Quite fun.
4. Halo 3-
Best FPS in existence, in my opinion.
3. NBA Jam
A fantastic sports game with an amazing fun factor.
2. KotOR-
Took something awesome (Star Wars) and made it into the best RPG ever created, with a fantastic story and replayability.
1. Starcraft 2
It took my previous best game ever, and balanced more things out.
Combine that with an updated Battle.net system, a better map editor, and a revamped competitive scene, and you have my money any day of the week.

5. Donkey Kong Country
4. Mirror's Edge
3. Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island
2. Beyond Good and Evil
1. Deus Ex

There's quite at bit that I've played this year that might make this list eventually, Persona 3 Portable is almost a sure thing, however the games (and my opinions of them) have not matured in my mind yet so I'm not going to add them to this list.

Honorable Mentions: Metro 2033, Super Mario Kart, Dawn of War, Bayonetta, Blazblue, Kingdom Hearts 2, Psychonauts, Sam and Max: Hit the Road, Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga, Project Gotham Racing 4.

What I've found rather surprising about other people's top fives is that there are a lot of newer games on peoples lists and that quite a number of people still haven't figured out that Goldeneye 007 is kind of shit. No offence intended to anyone who put that on their lists or anything, just my opinion.

1 (tie). Final Fantasy VII - Yeah, I'm a predictable, anti-hipster douchebag who likes the characters and plot of VII the best, take away my "cool" card. I will say that the Compilation of FFVII is complete garbage and feels like someone who only took the game at face value wrote the entries (like forgetting that Cloud was a hilarious smartass). Cloud and Sephiroth are also have one of the best hero-villain dynamics in gaming, almost akin to Batman and the Joker. As such, it's not hard to see why every FF since then has been lacking due to their lack of a memorable antagonist relation to the hero.

Vagrant Story - Probably the most unique game Yasumi Matsuno ever wrote or directed and arguably his best. I replay VS every year and am still amazed at its narrative. Ashley Riot is a character that makes nearly every male protagonist in gaming look like a childish, "grim and gritty" bore and has a plot that is intelligent and gripping without ever feeling pretentious. The gameplay systems are also rich and deep with players spending HOURS on weapon customization.

2. Xenogears - Too bad the guys who made Xenosaga never reached the level of this masterpiece (though the lack of Masato Kato for Saga is probably the best explanation). Xenogears is a 70 hour epic journey chronicling the story of Fei Fong Wong and his manifold problems and obstacles. It also has the greatest love story in a game. Ever. No exceptions. Though things can get rather complex, it feels like they're complex because they HAVE to be.

3. Chrono Cross - Oh yes, I went there. I like Trigger like any respectable RPG geek, but Cross was also more interesting to me. While Trigger was an idealistic romp concerning time travel, Cross explores the consequences of those actions and even wraps up a major hanging thread from Trigger. With a complex battle system and an involving narrative, CC really took the series in a bold, interesting direction.

4. Final Fantasy Tactics - FFT was of course Matsuno's debut at Square. No longer able to use his Ogre Battle series, Matsuno instead opted to make a new series with similar themes. With a rich lore of political intrigue, an incredibly deep class system, and a fascinating narrative, Matsuno made a grand debut with this title.

5. Castlevania: Symphony of the Night - Literally the ONLY game in my top five not made by Square (and the only one not written by Masato Kato or Yasumi Matsuno, huh), SotN is a gold standard that even the series it copied (Metroid) hasn't been able to match. Though it has some REALLY bad dialogue SotN is a masterpiece in gaming that stands as by far the best and most beloved entry in Castlevania.

Numero 5 is Shadow over Mystara, back in the day when Capcom was the King of beat 'em ups came this jewel for the Sega Saturn... I considered Guardian Heroes but Shadow was just a compilation of the best things I loved about these games in general. Lots of Unique Characters, a story that doesn't get on the way (evil lass over there, kill her ass), dashes uppercuts, Items, lots of monsters, a branching path, awesome bosses, 4 player (or 6 on some machines) co-op, Incredible music. The best game fast paced game out there with the name Dungeons and Dragons out there... Now if I could only get this (and Tower of Doom) for the PSN/XBLA with online co-op...

Number 4!!! Would be a tie Between Megaman 2 and Megaman 3, back on the original NES... I had one of those fathers who believed that Nintendo was Satan spelled backwards (or whatever) and that pluggin it to the TV would make the whole house caught up in flames... So I had to play games the best I could when I was growing up and they had to be a fast to set up, get going and play as much as possible before they (my parents) came back from their date night. So hence came games like Megaman... Aside of that little reason these 2 games have some of the best chip-tunes fom the 8-bit era. The rules were easy to grasp and the simple notion of being able to get to Dr.Willy in the time of no save slots or memory cards (just passwords) and beat his evil ass (for the last time... again) is just awesome... And if I had to unplug the game ina hurry I wouldn't be as sorry as having to cut it short on Final Fantasy before being able to Save.

Number 3 Would have to be... Castlevania Lords of Shadow. The thing about this game, same as many other games is that is a love it or leave it game.
I was expecting this game since I happen to come across the GT Countdown of the most anticipated games of 2010, since then I was hooked, trying to find more and more about the game with Patrick Stewards voice in it. Once I got my hands on it I had heard all the bad rep people gave the game and I was slightly crestfallen. Oh boy was I wrong to doubt. Maybe its just me, but this game clicked it. I have heard many arguments like "Only a third takes place in a Castle" or "You don't fight that many Vampires" or "sometimes you are outside during daylight!" or "The way they bring Dracula in is a joke" But I don't think that's really the case. They fact that some levels take place during the night or day actually give the game a needed contrast.
The atmopshere in each setting is haunting and perfectly nailed. The combat is good, not a smooth in the sense that is a no so easy to learn & difficult to master and I would have preferred a whole more of finishers, but the whip attacks and the QTEs are functional. The music is good but not memorable although I now know the reason... Thanks Extra Credits and the game is soooo Colorfull and the vistas amazing!!!! OMG.
Also it's a throwback to SuperCastlevania IV, where skill, not RPG elements like stats and equipment meant all the difference in the world. (It also reminds me to Bramstoker Dracula's... Evolution of Gabriel into... you know... anyone? Like the origins of You know...) :)
Lastly the game is full of references (beyond the cake is a lie) like Star Trek or even other cult status games like (Gabriel Belmont is a knight... So Gabriel Knight? Like... Oh I get it, but no way... It's not like there's werewolves in this game)

Number 2 Batman Arkham Asylum.
Although I could just say 'nuff said and leave it at that, the game deserves much more. Visually is not as engaging as many other AAA games BUT is more than fuctional. The combat is Kick-ass, there are so many ways to go into the game and come out satisfied wether you try your deduction abilities (I didn't use Gamefaqs or anything and got all the clues on the first go! Same for C:LoS) and you just have a blast beating the living stuffing our of bad guys. And besides that you are the God Dammed Batman! It could only be more awesome if it had tits and was on fire!!! ... Wait... no... no forget that last bit.

And number 1 would have to be... Red Dead Redemption. Maybe it's not the best game of the world or the best one made to date. But for me it came down to the simplicity of immersion. True that other games like Neverwinters Nights could actually draw me in better than others. But stepping into the boots of John Marston and having long rides on horses through the Wild West (I only skipped the travel once and that was because I had to go to sleep and just wanted to save ASAP) But waiting to do certain missions while raining or at night or at the break of dawn or simply any of the random events taking place in the world. Also a good story and interesting characters don't hurt. Oh and the music is awesome I never liked Polka as much!

Quoted for maximum truth. Tough list... (in no particular order)

Prince of Persia: Sands of Time
Metal Gear Solid
Hitman: Contracts
Jedi Knight II
Team Fortress 2

Though, these are 5 of my favourite games, I could probably write another 50. These are the first five that popped in. They're all beautiful. Like a..tree.
