I like how so many people decry JRPGs for being so samey, and in the same post list Bioware, Black Isle and Bethesda products almost exclusively for their "top WRPG" list.

I suppose I'd better place mine, then.
What's so samey about Black Isle? Ok IWD wasn't original in any way but Fallout? Planescape? Don't put them in the same league as Bioware and Bethesda. However of all the people to post in this thread you have the best taste so far. Although looking your choices I would really recommend you try Fallout 1/2 and that you get them soon as Bethesda is currently trying to prevent them from being sold. Oh and just out of curiosity have you ever tried Disgaea?

Ya, it's so hard to find a good amount of RPGs nowadays, unless you have a PS2.

And for the other statement, most people don't know that Kotor is actually based on...can't remember the number, but the current D&D ruleset at the time. So you may not "see" it, but Kotor is old-school classic D&D turnbased combat, just like NWN.

I mostly mentioned Black Isle out of a lack of certainty as to what was actually made by them, and what by BioWare. Had I played Fallout, I don't doubt it would have been on my list.

As for Fallout 1/2 and Disgaea, I've had every intention of getting to both for a good long while. Financial issues have prevented me from getting very far in my endeavour, but they're most definitely on my list.

Sure are a lot of Western vs Japanese threads lately, aren't there?

Western:
Fallout 3
Oblivion
Mass Effect
Fable II
Dragon Age: Origins

The funny thing is, if you asked me what are my top 5 games of any genre, it wouldn't look much different than that.

Japanese:
Final Fantasy X

and...erm... Pokemon?

Western RPGs:
KOTOR
Fallout 3

JRPGs:
Tales of Symphonia
Tales of Vesperia
(technically) Pokemon

I haven't played a lot of RPGs. This list is practically all I have, though I have to vouch for the Tales series. At least it has real-time combat that's fun and very deep, unlike turn-based JRPGs that own the entire market.

Western:
1. Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind
2. Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion
3: KOTOR
4: Fable 3
5: KOTOR 2

edit: Oh shit, Mass Effect! Yeah Mass Effect in there somewhere too.

I hate Japanese games. I hate the music, I hate the style and I hate the feel of the games. However, I did enjoy Pokemon when I was a little girl, so I'm going to say Pokemon.

What's with the JRPG hate? There are some really good JRPGs out there.
The shitty combat, brain fucked stories and the female looking men?
Wow that really adds a lot to the discussion, don't you feel like you're stereotyping jrpgs a bit? Personally I believe there is a ton more strategy in the battle system present in Chrono Trigger than the same old hack and slash present in Oblivion or the sub-par third person shooting in Mass Effect. To address the stories, the stories in jrpgs range from a wide variety of genres and formulas, I hardly thing "brain fucked," is the most intelligent way to generalize their stories. Finally Female Looking men? So what? It surprising that the art style in a game can be so distracting to so many people. This female looking men argument comes up a lot, I feel like it is just ignorant homophobia. Congrats man, be proud.

Let's see here:

Western

World of Warcraft
Freedom Force
Fallout: New Vegas
Borderlands
And if you count Bioshock, that's my fifth. If not, then Dragon Age: Origins, I guess.

JRPG

Kingdom Hearts
Final Fantasy X
Persona 4
Pokemon (pick one)
The World Ends With You
*and as a bonus, I'll put DIssidia: Final Fantasy on here. Because it rocks, and it's the best thing Square has made in some time.

I also feel that the JRPG hate going on in this thread is a bit over-the-top. WRPGs and JRPGs both have their merits, they're just different, is all.

Western RPGs are more about embracing the Role Playing aspect of RPGs, while JRPGs are more about telling a more cohesive story through the eyes of a developed protagonist. Not a rule set in stone, of course, but a good guideline to go on.
