well since ive only played CoD:Modern warfare2 and black ops, i I cant say much.
but i think they are pretty good, the story mode is short but sweet, and the online multiplayer isnt so bad either.
I think the games really too much on multiplayer though, and not on the actual story or anything, and i think a game should be able to stand on single player , and not just on multiplayer.

Liked MW okay, was disappointed by MW2 and was ready to just leave the series, then Blops managed to win me over big time. Best multiplayer I've been around in a while.

I loved the first CoD, The solo campaign on this one was really exciting and got my blood pumping (and my computer frying).
The franchise had it's up and down, but for me it's still a really fun experience.
Still, The last 3 CoD has been one of my best experience has a solo campaign in the last FPS I played. As many said before, Call Of Duty is know for these blockbuster campaign.

So short version, Call Of Duty is a good game. Not the best, but definately a title that hold it's place in my game library.

it's awesome in the shooting aspect, and the multiplayer of the series is incredibly fun

but the campaign side just died after CoD2

I loved, loved the original Call of Duty, Stalingrad especially. There's nothing like being thrust in front of twenty-odd machine guns without a gun and just a clip of ammo for comfort.

I didn't play the franchise again until CoD4, which I immensely enjoyed, although I only borrowed it. The campaign felt fresh and was definitely a new experience. I'm tempted to pick up Black Ops, though based on what I've heard about the state of CoD's single player nowadays (too short, being one), I'm less tempted. I love the multiplayer, but I don't want to pay £40 on Steam for BO and just get a very good multiplayer and a lacklustre single player.

That said, I'm slowly caving and I'll probably buy it soon.

If you've asked me a year ago then i'd say that it was my second favourite franschise. Now, not so much. Allthough I will always look at Call of Duty 1 and 4 as magnificent games through and through.

CoD 2 and WaW? No so much.

I'll say what I said before: Black Ops is my last CoD game. Not that it's bad, in fact that's exactly why. It's been a year since MW2, I'm not paying next year for another CoD. Black Ops fixed most of the problems of MW2 (but the issue of spawn camping has actually gotten worse, IMO. Almost everything else was fixed), and I'm having a lot of fun with Black Ops. But the story is progressively getting worse, and I'm not paying $60 a year for just multiplayer.

My opininion differs vastly depending on the game so here's the list:
1 & 2: These game are brilliant and a must play.
3: Tried some new stuff and screwed up making something pretty crappy but at least trying something new.
4 MW: Again trying something new and even leaving WW2 behind to try something new with a modern setting and it turned out pretty good.
WaW: Bringing what they did in the last game to their old setting, what could possibly go wrong? Well this would be a pretty good example.
MW2: Well they knew what they were doing with the first one so this should be pretty good. Campaign: Unforgettable, but only because it's so bad. Multiplayer: Adding so much it get's ridiculous doesn't make things much better.
BO: I went into this expecting very little and I wasn't surprised.

I love all the people that claim one game in particular in the series was amazing or whatever and then say another one sucked (I'm speaking about everything post CoD3, for the record). Newsflash guys, all of them since CoD4 have been EXACTLEY THE SAME GAME. Slightly different campaigns, microscopic tweaks to gameplay, and a few new increasingly game-breaking features each time, but fundamentally the games all have exactley the same gameplay. Raging about one and then praising another makes absolutely no sense.

As for my view, I can sum CoD up in one word: generic. I'm talking core gameplay here - you shoot the person, he dies, rinse, lather, repeat. That's literally it. Grenades and melee attacks have exactley the same effect, and all the guns do exactley the same thing - they all make the enemy drop dead. This isn't Halo, where all the weapons and equipment have unique functions and there's a clear set of game-specific tactics, nor is it TF2, where each class's gameplay is fundamentally tailored to a different mission. It's just *boring.* I will give the games some credit, what's there has been very well polished - it's just too bad there's nothing much there. It's like they made the basis for a fun FPS and were going to put some cool game mechanics on top of it (i.e. Crysis with the suit options or Mirror's Edge with the parkouring), but just left it at that basis.

To the game's credit, the singleplayer campaigns have a few cool set-pieces and bits of scripting (and MW2 in particular takes you to a few cool locales), but the whole thing feels very much like a rail shooter. Go here, shoot this enemy with this weapon, get on this turret and shoot when and where I tell you, hide behind that bush, use your grenade launcher now. It's too scripted, too linear, and the pacing is too rigid. Too cinematic, in a way. It's fun once, but after that there's absolutely no replay value.

Multiplayer is an unmatched disaster. In addition to the game being extremely bland - the afformentioned boring gameplay, the lack of any real objectives or teamwork, the utter forgettableness of most of the maps and matches - it's also horrendously broken. Ever since the game-breaking helicopters in CoD4, once one side gets a slight edge or has one really good player, the entire game tips dreastically in that team's favor. The horrible map designs don't help - you spawn out in the open to be killed by airborne enemies two seconds later, enemies spawn right behind you with startling frequency (lack of any clear "sides" on the maps), the layouts don't ecourage teams to stick together but instead everyone to run off in their own direction. Then I compare it to a game like TF2 and the whole thing seems even worse.

Normally I wouldn't go on such a big rant about one generic game, but when one gets more popular than Christ without actually doing anything while hundreds of vastly superior games get overshadowed, it's hard to not want to take the piss out of it.

Honestly, I've not played a whole lot of any CoD games.

I played about ten minutes of CoD2.

I played a couple hours of Modern Warfare single-player.

I played a few matches of MW2 multiplayer.

That's it. It's not that I don't like them, they just haven't really grabbed me.

I think the CoD games are good, I've only really played 4 and Nazi Zombies with friends (which is one of the most awesome ideas ever conceived for a shooter) but what I dislike is the culture which surrounds the series among younger players. My younger sister says that all the boys talk about while at school is CoD and the number of frags they got or whatever (I never got into the lingo).

The problem is that it's doing to people who love shooters what rpgs currently do, controls peoples' lives, taking up all their spare time for an utterly pointless outcome. I despise the idea that games turn people into killers however I do beleive they desensitizer people a bit and I think we should be cautious of where this is going. Not on red alert and blowing things out of proportion but cautious.

Parents, don't let your children under 12 play them and don't let them play them after a certain time. If they don't already have a computer in their room don't let them have one and if they do just keep an occasional eye on them (seriously, you don't have to ban them or just let them do whatever, find some middle ground people!).

I would ask that the developers slow down production of these games but I don't expect any love considering the embarassing amounts of money they're making. I think the games may eventually stagnate unless the developers foresee it and stop but with so many people utterly in love with the franchise it'll take a lot longer to stagnate than most series even after it's become mere expansion pack releases which include one extra gun with just multiplayer.

Conclusion: a great idea which has managed to remain good through 6 sequels and will likely remain good for years to come. However, the culture is something which I fear is at an unstable equilibrium and represents the consumerist sheep herding I despise about today's society.

There's my two cents, although you'd probably waste 1000x that amount in the time it takes to read! :p

I liked CoD, CoD 2, CoD 3, CoD 4: MW, CoD: WaW not so much and I liked CoD: MW 2 as well.

Haven't played multiplayer in any of those. I might be getting Black Ops.

It's a great franchise. Some people just hate MW2 because it's popular, or because of people who like it. Which makes no sense to me.

No worries on that front.
None of the campaigns of any of the games have really been any longer or shorter than the original's :)
They've all been around the 4-7 hour mark depending on difficulty and playing speed, Black Ops is no exception.

And to the guy saying the graphics look cartoony, check out the original Call of Duty. I remember when it came out it was slated by a certain sub-section of the community for being "Cartoon of Duty."

I liked CoD2, MW1 and 2, WaW and BO to an extent, though I think the SP of BO was a little short, and the AI it's so retarded I could just run towards them and knife their asses most of the time

Its weird, the COD games have a lot that I like in them, but somehow when put together they just lack a fun factor for me.

I have played all of the call of duty games and my favorites are the Modern Warfare series. I didnt enjoy Black Ops (Terrible singleplayer) or World at war at all. But 1 thing they seriously need to change in all the COD games is: the never ending re-spawning enemies (until you reach the next check point) style of game play. That is seriously annoying.

Black Ops: A special forces version of Tyler Durden shooting people in the cold war.

I have played COD, COD2, COD united offensive, COD BIG RED, MW, WAW, MW2, WAW for DS and now Black Ops for xbox. MOST of them fun fun fun.

Singelplayer:
Sure it can grow. We just need those lazy basement nerds to implement Kinect where possible so we can give some hand signs like "COVER" or "MOVE UP". And im sure some fun non gimmick thingie could be figured out for the reloading of your weapon and it´s fire rate.

I would for all platforms really like a singelplayer equivalent(thanks google)for the "create a class" multiplayer have.
And they really need to cut some of the scripting so i can go about stuff with my chosen weapon in my own pace. Zombies in BO and WAW would also benefit from a "create a class".
Black OPS does a lot of things right, and one of those is it´s story. It´s really good if you get it.

Multiplayer:
From my point of wiew there is a lot more room to grow and evolve. And for those of you who have tried Original CoD for PC, We have come a long way from that grenadespamming spawnrape clusterfuck that was COD 1.
But we are not quite there yet and MW 2 kind of set the whole thing back a game or two.
Black Ops redeem that.
But next time don´t include sniper weapons at all. And if they have to, make them instakill 50cal in fixed positions and temp give the user ghost perk.

All in all. These days you buy a COD game for ít´s combination of singel and multiplayer. And im quite sure the singelplayer is giving room for more CoOp in the future.

Sry for spelling and gramma. SO dont bother pointing out im a illiteret retardet Dane.
