Say, "Yes sir/ma'm!" When they are done explaining the issue.

The best way to get as little punishment in such an instance as possible is to get in as little trouble as possible. I think throughout my high school career, I only got brought to the principal's office for good reasons, except for an issue with anonymous defacement in a class that I was in. We were brought all individually, and explained to the best of my ability that I'm not that much of a dickwad. Using different words of course.

Scream at them at the top of your lungs, 'i dont go to this school!'. Then jump out a window.

I use some smooth talking/charm that I immediately inhereit the second something like that happens.

It's weird, but that's actually what happens when I get in trouble.

This happened to me actually... I was in the office cause I pissed in some kids schoolbag (trying to emulate jackass/cky... I was 13) and had to try explain myself... I blamed it on my parents divorce, principal figured I was just trying to get attention back home, and only gave me a 3 day suspencion as opposed to the 10 day she was thinking of doing

Feign remorse, embarrassment at what I've done, and general disbelief that I've done it. Then apologise and "accept" the full consequences. Make sure to stress that I deserve it.

This never removes the trouble but it leads to a much more lenient punishment as I'm not pissing them off making them want to punish me and I'm giving off the air of "I'm punishing myself more than you could".

Also a lot of staring at the ground looking shocked.

I should stress that I never really broke the rules at school so I only ever did this at home with bad report cards. (I was good in school but I had a terrible work ethic)

Usually I'm getting in trouble for assulting someone, so I'd play up how much I was provoked, and downplay how hard I hit. Sometimes I can claim that the person hit me back and harder, which greatly minimizes the blame on me.
If it's a vandilism thing, I usually only ever write things on paper (with the wrong hand, or better yet, typed, so they can't take a handwriting sample) and then tape them down in places anyone could've taped them. Since it's high school we're talking about, a whole bunch of people come in and out of that room and desk everyday (especially if it's the cafeteria; the entire student body goes through there.) Since I take these precautions, I'm usually never suspected, but if I am, I point out that they couldn't possibly prove I did it, since it's in a public place and there's no handwriting, so they have no right to accuse me. Best thing to do, really, is to tag the inside of your locker non-permenately, which is totally okay, no matter what you write (even if it's the stuff I usually write, like 'In nomine Dei nostri Satanas Luciferi excelsi!' or 'I thought I could deal with them, but I can't. I will kill all of you.' or maybe just 'What am I doing here?'
Those are my stratagies for staying out of trouble.

Haha, this. There's been times where they even know it's me, but I'll still deny it. Like once I put porn on everyone's screen in ICT, the teacher knew it was me, he sent me out and I got a detention, but I still denied it. He even saw me click enter on his master PC and saw all the porn fly up on screen, but I still denied I was ever stood there. It was awkward, because I knew I did it, and he did, so it was just like e_e'

whatever it is I get in trouble for, when I am brought into the office and it's just me and the principle or whoever, I'll just start to strip, pick up the nearest blunt object and start hitting myself. When i'm all nice and bruised and the administrator is thoroughly puzzled. I turn and run out of the room screaming "I'm not your sex toy!" Then do everything I can to get them charged with rape.

Manning up, admitting it was wrong, and telling them there was no excuse goes a LONG way, especially if you mean it (Which, when I did it, I actually meant it.).

You'd be amazed how this works.

This is why many principles require a secretary or teacher in the room now a days...

Nah, we were like friends. It was the lowest ICT class so no work was ever done, we'd just play Trial Bike or Street Fighter all lesson. Plus, the guy was new, young and didn't expect anything from us, so without the discipline or teacher respect he was just a cool guy. Although, he did go below the belt by moving my best friend (and Street Fighter opponent) to another class, that was fucking cruel. I did the best in the exam with a D, fun times.

Another time too was when I got caught hitting someone's head off the wall, and a teacher was looking straight at me, I looked into her eyes as I looked up. I denied that too, they didn't believe me.

I'm going off topic. In general, I deny everything.

Yeah...I'm really bad at coming up with excuses...
how about giving him a muffin like in your avatar?
OT:idk, depends on what he accuses me of.Usually just give her(yes my principal's a she)the eyebrow up look and say"really......really?you think I did that?do you have any proof?"
I usually make up an excuse right off the bat.

[edit]why do they punish you without any legitamite proof?wow they are actually hurting are knowledge by not giving us a fair trial
