I was said man devoid of movie knowledge until about 6 years ago. I had seen very few movies and almost none of the classics. I've since changed.

I'm slowly working my way through my various friends' and family members' must see lists. For instance, until last year I hadn't seen Gladiator. I feel safe in saying that I've seen every English-language, Hollywood 'must see' movie of the last 6 or 7 years and I'm getting to the older classics. I just watched Young Frankenstein for the first time two nights ago.

Still, here's a short list of movies I still haven't seen:
Aliens
A Nightmare on Elm Street
Scream
City of God
An Inconvenient Truth
Ben-Hur
One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest
Bad Taste
Apocalypse Now

I've known people who've never seen back to the future, but I think the 2 main films everyone should have/must have seen are The Wizard of Oz and Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory.

It probably means he has a life. I've seen loads of movies, but I don't expect people to know even the most popular ones. That's why it's fun telling them why they should watch that movie. Has worked well with my friends who'd never watch indie or foreign films. I love pitching the movie.

Now my friends have seen Dogtooth, Thirst, The Fountain, Scott Pilgrim, and other awesome movies.

I normally adress "You've never seen..!?" with a wry response. Oh sorry, I guess that just makes me less/ sub-human then. God I would never have even seen Titanic if it wasn't for a neurotic GF i had, and i could have lived without seeing it! Not to rant or hate, but I believe The Aviator better shows DiCaprio's acting abilities.

Get over it anyway, it's cool to give a pleasant reminder to make someone think "oh yeah, i might actually be missing out" but taking such a drastic viewpoint isn't cool!

I had a co-worker today that had no idea what the musical genre of grunge was. GRUNGE! You know, that whole gynormous music scene that dominated damn near a decade of music?! Jesus christ.

I haven't seen any of the movies you mentioned. Loads of people were surprised that I hadn't seen Anchorman, which I've only watched recently.

Count me in as part of the list that hasn't seen (*insert must see movie*) here. I guess my standards for entertainment are just higher than most. Outside of work, training, and running errands, I spend most of my time playing games and browsing the internet. I almost never watch TV or movies anymore.

I only saw Ghost Busters 1+2 and all three Back to the future movies either last year or the year before, for a film student it didn't come across my mind, until my lecture almost strung me up when I said I also hadn't watched a majority of a movies a film student should of at least seen once. I think it's down to the fact my parents never really forced me to watch movies when I was younger. o_O

I'm that guy lol. I have a ton of movies to catch up on. I've never seen Indian Jones 2 and 3, Lord of the Rings 2 and 3, Fight Club, Pulp Fiction, or A Clockwork Orange... Don't hate me =P

So...

I recently got in a conversation with a newly acquainted friend of mine. A discussion that gradually transferred from video games to movies.

I made a reference to a Tyler Durden quote, but he didn't seem to get it. He had never seen Fight Club. Huh... I tried bringing up Old Boy, but he hadn't even heard of that movie. Fair enough, I suppose. But when I brought up Pulp Fiction, he hadn't even the slightest idea what the movie was about - not even a quote!

And thus: personal DVD-collection to the rescue! Now while I think Fight Club is a movie every (wo)man should see at least once in his/her life, I decided to hook him up with Pulp Fiction first. And guess what? He hated it! He actually called it flat-out boring and uninteresting!

Now, my question to you: have you ever met a man so void of modern cultural knowledge you just couldn't believe it?
(I mean, in the end, the fact that he hadn't seen the movies still baffled me more than the fact he thought Pulp Fiction sucked. In the end, people still have the right to have their own opinions, even if they don't make sense...)

Oh, and not surprisingly, he had also never seen A Clockwork Orange or The Godfather - though I've experienced more than once in my life, that there are more people who simply quote the movies instead of actually seeing them.
How old was this guy? I'm 16 and Pulp Fiction is probably one of my favourite movies ever. Clockwork Orange and Fight Club were good too. I wouldn't expect many people I know to have seen them though.
He's 19.
He's studying 'Digital Arts & Entertainment', just like me, at the 'Howest Hogeschool'.

...So yeah, I kind of expected at least some knowledge of cult movies.

Wow, I came into this thread expecting to hear everyone agree with the TC and post their own related stories, but way way too many of you have gimped your own enjoyment. Do you guys only play video games or something?

I figured being on a game forum meant most users openly pursue all mediums of entertainment. Movies, music, books, etc are all so standardized in society that people can enjoy those while still easily discriminating against games, but I've always thought that gamers were more open minded about where they get their fun, hence why they don't think playing games is taboo.

I have a friend just like a lot of you. He plays a ton of games, but has seen basically zero movies and has no desire to. Games have destroyed his attention span (his words, not mine) so now he has absolutely no interest in watching anything that doesn't immediately involve him controlling it. When he does watch a movie he usually ends up enjoying it, but the idea of experiencing something without playing it is totally unappealing to him.

Not singling anyone out here, obviously I know none of you personally. But if you only play games and ignore others fields, then you're just as bad as the grumpy older generations that avoid gaming. If all you follow is nerd culture, then you're no better than obsessive sports fans or Twilight girls (too far?). There's so much more out there :(

On topic though, a TON of people haven't seen or heard of Snatch or Evil Dead 2. It's not really an "Are you serious?!" moment, because they're sort of niche films, but still movies more people should watch.
