But hold on...isn't it just human nature to pick up others' phrases and adopt them if you like them or find them particularly appropriate? We don't all spontaneously create new phrases every time we want to express something.
I have to admit, not too many of Yahtzee's gems have entered my general vocabulary, but every time I'm stuck behind/dealing with something/someone who is going annoyingly slowly, the phrase 'punishing lack of urgency' springs to mind, and I'm pretty sure that one came from a ZP I watched at one point.
Very true. But the problem isn't that, it's people using his lines in specific regard to consoles and games out of context to support an opinion it wasn't meant to support. That's the true plague, I'd say.
Well, I guess if someone really is taking Yahtzee's words in vain, it'll go one of two ways:
1) The readers who don't know ZP will just assume it's solely the poster's view on something and base their responses on that assumption,

or

2)The readers who are familiar with Yahtzee's own particular brand of prose will recognise the discrepancy in context and read the post accordingly, either wondering why the person used Yahtzee's words out of context or identifying with the difference and preferring the new take on the phrase...

Basically, as long as they aren't explicitly stating that Yahtzee himself said something about a game/console that he did not, in fact, say...then I guess the phrase is just one like any other that has entered the general vocab and inevitably had its meaning or usage altered. The internet is very good at that sort of thing. Just think of phrases like 'epic win' and 'lol'd' =)

EDIT: I do agree though that if your entire post consists solely of a quote, not cited, from Yahtzee, you need to think a little harder, Forums are there for you to give your own opinion on something, after all. My assumption above was that people were seasoning their posts with Yahtzee-isms, not using them as the whole post.

I agree with your' argument, when people use his material with none of their own wit and originality it will never be funny, but a lot of what Yahtzee says isn't his own material, so you can't expect people not to say it just because he used it in his videos.

Why not? It's fun. I don't think I've done it but I can understand why people do.

Familiarity creates a common ground. He is pretty funny and popular, see how many hits his videos get. Quoting him shows people you are aware and like him too.

Where else would you be able to quote him?

Seriously? Go into a thread about Gears of War 2, Tomb Raider, Halo, Killzone 2 or JRPG's and you will see everyone who dislikes the games quote him like there's no tomorrow.

So, what the hell is your point? Yahtzee has some very memorable quotes and they usually have a point that fits common topics on this forum with points of view we usually agree with. So what if we quote him?

Theres 102 episodes, each with a lot of words, he didnt trademark any of it so using them too is not quoting him.
"Quotation is used in text to indicate the words of another speaker or writer." -wikipedia

Ugh. You know what else isn't trademarked? The Gettysburg address, Forest Gump, or anything that anything before 1870.
Uh dont be silly and look around, people dont quote him like that, they dont say "as yahtzee said, pants on head retarded" they just use his words as his own, thats what bothers people so dont try and be a smartass
Look up the fucking definition of quote. I know it. Your grammar is poor, so I assume you aren't that old, and are probably due a dose if humility.

And by the way, the phrase "due a dose of humility" as I've said it is something Yahtzee once said in an AG podcast. It's not trademarked, yet it's a quote. I generally try not to resort to abuse, but you're a moron.

Assuming from your poor choice of language i guess you dont know how to express yourself so you use curse words, common in kids, which is i reported you, but its probably your parents fault.

Whats up with all the "no trademark before 1870" thats neither here nor there, what does being able to quote old books have to do with people using Yahtzee words, and i have to say you are an imbecile to bring up the definition of quote straight from wikipedia since we all know what it means. People do not literally quote the man they just use words he does, just because he said something doesnt mean someone else cant say it, which is what angers the creator of this post, and thats different than full on quoting someone.

Btw its a forum, im not writing a novel here so i dont use grammar, people dont use it that much on the internet or in any online game, people use slang and short words, also people who point out grammar on the internet are either children or people who cant stand reading something without apostrophes, look it up.

Also i said its NOT trademarked so people can quote away, just like they can quote anything else whether its before 1870 or after, so your post is obsolete

I will now cease stooping at your level and cause talking to you.
No, you don't use grammar because you're from Serbia and so far, I've noticed only one Serbian who uses grammar. I am that Serbian. People here don't know shit about punctuation or anything actually. Except, you know, Professors and Doctors.

OT: He has some cool quotes. Why not use them?

Nah mate don't say that, people use grammar just not on the internet, years of foruming, mmos and multiplayer fps have made me stop using punctuation and grammar on the internet since its not appreciated and takes too much time to type. I time without looking at the keyboard and very fast so i don't use apostrophes or anything like that, and its ok since people understand what i'm saying. When i'm writing something i do it very literate and slowly. Ive read enough books in English and learned it enough to know the grammar but i agree that our people such at grammar and English
Wouldn't it depend on what you're doing on the Internet? Typically, trying to seriously debate whilst using text-speak makes you look like an idiot and more people will side with the other person.

Oh wait, we're talking about Yahtzee's quotes.

It depends on the quote itself. Terms like "console tard" have been around before he started his Zero Punctuation videos. Others just seem appropriate to the situation, and as long as you don't try to overuse them, I see nothing wrong with it.

Then you have ones like "Short Answer: No. Long Answer: Nooooooooooo". Pointless and unnecessary and doesn't actually add to a discussion in any meaningful way.

People give him far more respect than he deserves. He's a funny guy, I like him. He's not a god, fans are strange.

I haven't noticed anybody trying to impersonate Yahtzee on this forums. Then again, I stay out of most of the console war threads. If someone is impersonating him, so what? They say mimicry is the best form of flattery.
Its also the most annoying.

But it's the quotes that are used to insult other members that annoy me, see my original post for what im talking about, they are over used and uneccassary.
Yahtzee has become part of videogame pop culture. I've seen others impersonate him on other forums and even a few videogame reviews on Amazon that are attempting his style.

I don't find it that distracting. There are people who use quotes from Family Guy and Futurama along with catchphrases from TV shows, films, books, etc. It's just the way it goes.
