But hold on...isn't it just human nature to pick up others' phrases and adopt them if you like them or find them particularly appropriate? We don't all spontaneously create new phrases every time we want to express something.
I have to admit, not too many of Yahtzee's gems have entered my general vocabulary, but every time I'm stuck behind/dealing with something/someone who is going annoyingly slowly, the phrase 'punishing lack of urgency' springs to mind, and I'm pretty sure that one came from a ZP I watched at one point.
Very true. But the problem isn't that, it's people using his lines in specific regard to consoles and games out of context to support an opinion it wasn't meant to support. That's the true plague, I'd say.
Well, I guess if someone really is taking Yahtzee's words in vain, it'll go one of two ways:
1) The readers who don't know ZP will just assume it's solely the poster's view on something and base their responses on that assumption,
or
2)The readers who are familiar with Yahtzee's own particular brand of prose will recognise the discrepancy in context and read the post accordingly, either wondering why the person used Yahtzee's words out of context or identifying with the difference and preferring the new take on the phrase...
Basically, as long as they aren't explicitly stating that
Yahtzee himself said something about a game/console that he did not, in fact, say...then I guess the phrase is just one like any other that has entered the general vocab and inevitably had its meaning or usage altered. The internet is very good at that sort of thing. Just think of phrases like 'epic win' and 'lol'd' =)
EDIT: I do agree though that if your
entire post consists
solely of a quote, not cited, from Yahtzee, you need to think a little harder, Forums are there for you to give your own opinion on something, after all. My assumption above was that people were seasoning their posts with Yahtzee-isms, not using them as the whole post.
