This. I'm sick of the whole discussion about realism. FPSs are all about action, and imo regenerating health is a perfect system to use in order to keep things flowing fast. Of course there are exceptions (tactical shooters and whatnot), but I think regenerating health works just fine in most FPSs.

I'd always get dizzy when playing Turok 2 or the Serious Sam games. No idea why, though, but I guess it's a combination of the game's palette (both have a very vibrant one) and all of the games being FPSs (with all the schizophrenic camera movement it implies).

The Body of The Many. Confusing level design, plus a variety of the most powerful enemies in the game... not very fun. The fucking escort mission in Bioshock. Silent Hill's sewers. The hospital in Silent Hill 3 Xen, of course. The Modron Maze (getting Nordom makes it worth it, though)

This. But of the ones there, I'd say Condemned, although I'd hardly call neither Dead Space nor FEAR horror games.

All of the endings in Planescape: Torment are great (albeit a bit depressing for the most part...).

Gears of War. There's something about the controls that makes them feel horribly unnatural, and I find the gunplay to be very unsatisfying.

FFVIII's junction system is pretty innovative, and successfully adds a new element of strategy to the game. Silent Hill 2 is way too easy, even on the higher difficulties (save for the puzzles, of course)

As others have mentioned, doing a survival horror game in a sandbox kinda setting will definitely mess up the pacing and affect its scariness somewhat. A horror themed sandbox game, on the other hand, doesn't sound too bad. Something along the lines of Vice City: Long Night, or Dead Rising...

Half-Life 2. I have no idea why I like it; the story is meh, the gunplay is dull, the puzzles are all the same, the AI is atrocious, the characters are nothing special and the setpieces are not really that impressive, yet, I enjoyed the hell out of it.

Both System Shock games are among the greatest games I've ever played, I definitely recommend them. Also, try Clive Barker's Undying, another underrated gem imo.

Unreal Tournament (the first one) also has a crossbow, and a pretty awesome one too! I'm not sure about the newer ones, though...
