Punky Brüster, I guess. It's a concept album where a death metal band sells out to be pop-punk. I'm not into comedy music much, but Punky Brüster was funny to me.

It has to do with having more freedom to create sounds, doing things that are impossible with analog stuff. I like it, myself, though I haven't got a preference.

Post-rock: Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Explosions In The Sky, 65daysofstatic, Ambient: William Basinski, Gas, Natural Snow Buildings. Krautrock bands like Faust also pour out the good stuff. Squarepusher, Ratatat, and Sunn O))) are all great instrumentalists as well.
