256 players? Cluster fuck is the only word that could accurately describe that. 36 man servers in TF2 is bad enough with 256 guys you have the potential for absolute mayhem and more shrapnel flying through the air then an exploding pointing objects factory.
Difference is TF2 doesn't have designated leaders and chains of command.
Also, TF2 is made for mayhem, but a guy at Zipper said, they wanna make it so people will work more in a team and give them tons of ways to play, like u can work on specialties, like Demolitions, Medic, Sniper etc...

I can see three obvious problems with this aside from potential technical ones:

1. It will be hard to find so many people for one match, that are close enouch to the server

2. They will have to make smaller maps for fewer people as well, and they will probably be more popular, since they're easier to fill. And then you have just another FPS...

3. You won't feel like you're achieving something in the mass of other people. It just doesn't sound fun...

I wonder if they can solve them...

There is a bit of info at: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Massive_Action_Game

Groups are broken into 8 player squads. There are commanders with their own voice channels. I doubt all 256 people would even be able to scream into the same channel. "The game will utilize a new server architecture" Who knows what that means for sure. I doubt they just threw a regular FPS engine together and let loose 256 players. Very ambitious yes, but without more info I can't just dismiss it. All we can do is wait and see. If it is even close to what they promise it will be awesome.

Well just because they can doesnt mean they will. Sure it may support 256 as the maximum allowed but i doubt it will reach those level or be able to sustain them very long. That said im not sure it would be that much fun with so many players, if all the other FPS online experience have shown me anything is that there will be 200 of those 256 players with sniper rifles camping. The other 56 will be trying to run up their frag count...just think of the most annoying parts of any FPS online shooter and multiply them by 10.
Oh God!! just imagine 256 wankers spamming rockets

I'll believe it when I see it working without lag. The other problem would be that the guy stuck at the back would see hundreds of allies and no enemies.

Resistance 2 counters this by "roaming spawn"; you always respawn on / near the front line.

yeah i heard about this a while ago. only tempting thing about ps3 period. I wont buy it because i'm not going to buy a ps3 but i hope it is successful so they're more MMOFPS in the future.

darkfall is a mmorpg/fps and its pretty amazing that although the graphics are outdated it can support 10,000 players on one seemless huge map, you have sieges with more than 256 people fighting and the lag is not meant to be that bad.

This sounds pretty much like PlanetSide [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PlanetSide]. which came out in 2003 and which strangely enough was developed by Sony.

Never played it myself though but heard it was fun in the beginning.

Only difference is that on MAG (Massive Action Game), the skills are gonna be useful and help u progress in the battle and Indigo has already explained another reason and no offence, classes mean nothing on TF2, just what weapons u use to help yourself, where as on MAG, it helps the whole team.

Great, I hate to be the dark cloud here but the PS3 online player base is very small though. This is going to make finding 255 other people a very, very long and annoying process I suspect.
And you suspect right.

Sounds like Joint Operations [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/JOTR] (more players on this game though, obviously).

I might be more interested about this game if it wasn't a PS3 exclusive :p

More players does not make a game any better, you just won't have the feeling like you are contibuting anything to the team.
And seeing the last game Zipper Interactive made is still a big mess with a tiny playerbase (Socom: Confrontations), we shouldn't expect this game to be WTFAWESOME all of a sudden.

This game will fail harder then Frontlines: Fuel of war did.
