I read his name once in connection with the American Revolution. Don't rightly know who he is though.

YES! He did write that. but that's not why he's the greatest Englishman ever

Okay, I'll tell you all (COOKIE WITHDRAWN FROM HERE ON OUT)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thomas_Paine
Thomas Paine wrote the legenday document: "The Rights of Man"

The Rights of Man was basically the foundation of modern day civil liberties, such as free speech and whatnot. Its ideals were the foundations and support for the American and French Revolutions, and also served as a core-work for their constitutions.

It basically laid out the earliest form of modern human rights

He was also an advocate of freedom and liberty, and favoured the French and American revolutions, and was an hounarary French citizen and representative in the National Constituency. He also met and befriended Napoleon (who, coincidently, slept with The Rights of Man underneath his pillow and told Paine himself that he wished that a gold statue of Paine be built in every city.), but condemned him when he too became a dictator.

In short, he was the founding father of freedom and liberty everywhere

Netherlands:

Vincent van Gogh
Baruch de Spinoza (Philosopher)
Anton van Leeuwenhoek (built the first decent microscope and discovered microorganisms)

Runner-ups:
Johan Cruijff
Rembrandt van Rijn
Abel Tasman (discovered New Zealand and Tasmania)

Anne Frank was officially German, so sadly no inclusion.
Very good choices! I would like to add Christiaan Huygens, mathematician, astronomer, physicist, horologist, and writer; our very own homo universalis.
