A dead genre(s) you really really want back

Okay maybe dead genre is stretching the point because certainly, if you look in the indie crowd or to the smaller developers you will find some people making games in genres that have not seen a AAA release in a long time, but still there is no denying that these days there are just some genres you don't see in the main gaming market anymore. What's one you really want to make a come back?

For me, it's the Space Combat Simulator. I grew up on games like Wing Commander and Freespace and they are just as fun now as they were back then. I would love nothing more than to see Wing Commander get a proper reboot, or hell even a Space Combat Game set in the Mass Effect universe, that would be awesome.

I do have hope that the space combat bit in Halo: Reach, however short it may be, may help rekindle some interest.

I agree with the Op. Space Flight arcade games like Starfox and Rogue Squadron. Those games were my childhood.

Text adventure!

Nah, just kidding. Those died for a reason. I'd like to see Arcade Sports games back. Stuff like NBA Jam, Street, NFL Blitz. You know, sports games that were fast paced and didn't take themselves, or anything, seriously.

Space Fucking Sims.
Can we please get those back? Please? I'll even buy the next Halo if it is set exclusively in space...

I second Space Combat. Freespace 2 compelled me to get a flight stick and held my attention for many many months. Hell, just reboot Freespace and I can die happy!

I've never got to try a Space Combat sim, so I also look forward to any game that may have something like that.

Personally, I kinda want a good classicly insane Shmup. While I'm pretty happy with Touhou, I'd love to play one with a normal sized hitbox and bullets. With the occasional midscreen laser.

I don't see enough pong games in the main stream gaming market :( but in all seriousness I hope platforming never dies.

Freespace-type space sims...realistic physics in space, suck.

Action Platformers like Mario 64 and Psychonauts...Mario Galaxy seems too disjointed, I like overworld maps and themed areas

Quake style FPS...screw recharging shields

Check out Freelancer. It's practically guaranteed to run on any system, and it still looks pretty decent.
Freelancer fanboy away!

I'll tell you why space combat simulators are dead. Ever played Space Force: Rogue Universe? That's probably the latest such game. That's the reason, it wasn't a very good game at all, the combat was you charging at an enemy then turning around and charging again. That said I really liked the old Colony Wars games for the PS1 because it was mission based instead of open world.

I would say JRPGs, but let's face it, I mean Final Fantasy. With Resonance of Fate, Star Ocean: The Last Hope, Golden Sun: Dark Dawn, not to mention all the remakes on the PSP and DS, it really is doing absolutely fine. Plus, Versus XIII looks amazing anyway.

Back on topic: Run and gun. What happened to Metal Slug?

Dead things usually have that title for a reason, because they did something to make them dead. And something that is dead should STAY dead, and I've yet to find any evidence to the contrary. If somebody does, please feel free to correct me, I'm open to cognitive dissonance. But until that point I feel that people should stop trying to resurrect dead things and start creating new things.
(Although doing something Frankenstein's Monster-ish would be cool. A bunch of dead things made into something better than the parts were? Hell yes.)

Simple and realistic samurai or sword fighter. Like Bushido Blade. No health bars, 3 stances, and some miscellanous other moves, selection of real-life weapons from swords, daggers and spears.

It's all in timing and strategy. Can be incapacitated, get lucky, or even use dirty tricks. Brilliant stuff, although maybe not suited to tournament play, but still extremely fun in friendly matches. God I miss that.

Me personally, I've always had a bit of a soft spot for space ship combat games, like in Star Wars Battlefront II. I discovered a while ago a game by Square Enix called Project Sylpheed on the XBox 360 that, while short, had huge numbers of weapons to choose from for your spaceship and was genuine fun to play. This game is all about the high speed, explosive laser filled extravaganza of futuristic space games, and I recommend it to anyone nostalgic for the genre.

It'd be cool to see a return to schmups, maybe even in 3D. And if it were 2D I'd want sprites, that half 3D half 2D crap is just ugly in my opinion.

It'd also be cool to see an actual turn based RPG, those aren't the perfect system, but it would work well in a newer game, not to say I don't like modern RPG's.
