Space Flight games.
Grunge-Cyberpunk (as a setting or style).
Mechwarrior/Giant Robot game that doesn't suck ass (Armored Core just up and died on me after 3).

Not very original, but it's what I crave.

I'm not sure it counts as a genre, but mech games need to make a comeback, bigtime. Give me Chromehounds 2! I WILL PAY YOU HUNDREDS OF DOLLARS FOR IT!

Not sure if it was ever a genre to begin with, but I would love games like Zelda to happen more, and on PC, too.

Assassin's Creed 2 really brings on the nostalgia for Ocarina of Time, though, and I'm really glad I picked it up during the Steam sale. It's like a cross between Splinter Cell, Prince of Persia, and the Legend of Zelda with improvements to make it unique and set in renaissance Italy. Awesome. I would like more games like this.

I'd second the Space Combat genre. (I grew up on Descent and X-wing Alliance... where are the successors to those games? :/)

A long, non-episodic point-n-click Adventure game. "Day of the Tentacle" was gold! Why did you people let it diiiiiie!?

Creative games. I know it isn't a genre but I want something different and not the usually quirky fare for that has become pretty mundane

OT: I read game at first and immediately though Jet Set Radio and Shenmue

Brawlers, aka Sidescroller Beat'em Ups.

I can't understand how they died out (almost). It's not like modern mechanics can't work with them. Seriously, you could do a side-scrolling, coop Ninja Gaiden without much trouble, you'd just have less platforming.

Well, we still use the Brawler style of Boss Fight every now and then, such as the Scarecrow fight in Arkham Asylum, but it's a shame the genre as a whole hasn't been getting any attention.

I'll also throw in God-Games for the hell of it.

EDIT:
And 3D Platformers like Mario (whoops) and Banjo-Kazooie. Ok, maybe not dead since I used Mario as an example, but I used to love those games, and now the variety is so small.

Tactical turn-based games like Jagged Alliance 2 and Fallout Tactics. I haven't seen a major release in this genre since Silent Storm in 2005

Okay maybe dead genre is stretching the point because certainly, if you look in the indie crowd or to the smaller developers you will find some people making games in genres that have not seen a AAA release in a long time, but still there is no denying that these days there are just some genres you don't see in the main gaming market anymore. What's one you really want to make a come back?

For me, it's the Space Combat Simulator. I grew up on games like Wing Commander and Freespace and they are just as fun now as they were back then. I would love nothing more than to see Wing Commander get a proper reboot, or hell even a Space Combat Game set in the Mass Effect universe, that would be awesome.

I do have hope that the space combat bit in Halo: Reach, however short it may be, may help rekindle some interest.
Crap! Ninja'd by the original poster. I miss X-wing. Rogue Squadron II got the feel for it back, and having split screen co-op in Rogue Squadron III was amazing. Now if only the consoles would start picking it up again. Ace Combat is a step in the right direction, but it's still lacking in both the co-op department, and the space department.

Space Flying Arcade games like Raiden, Aerostar, Subterranean Animism, Sub-Terrania, Gradius, etc.

Then there's the other type of Space Flying games I wish to see more of like the original Starfox, we lack those.

Yeah, Space Combat Sims need to come back. There was nothing wrong with them and they just phased away. Wing Commander re-boot would be great, as well as a new Tie-Fighter / X-Wing re-boot.

Text adventure!

Nah, just kidding. Those died for a reason. I'd like to see Arcade Sports games back. Stuff like NBA Jam, Street, NFL Blitz. You know, sports games that were fast paced and didn't take themselves, or anything, seriously.
You know, there was an advantage to those text adventure games, they had a lot of bang for the developer's buck. I'm not saying I want them back, but more simplistic adventure games would be great.

Those odd physics-based 2d destructive enviorments-things would be nice to see big-budjet. Like on PSN or something. Shit like "Liero" and "Volcano". remember those things? They were pretty fun and ridicilous.

Turn based strategy. I don't even know why they died. Is it because everyone has ADHD these days?
