Achievements give me something to do when I've beaten the game proper several times. Left 4 Dead's achievements are pretty interesting, and I'm working on getting more of them.

Basically this. The only achievements I ever get are the ones that I just happen to get while playing through the game. I don't obsess about them because they don't do anything.

Wow this thread really went into some detail about Social etiquette ha ha.
Anyway it seems to have gotten into a rant about me hating Achievements.
So i'll give a good example.
When playing Fable 2 i immediately went to the achievement section and saw the achievement for completing the spire level etc etc.
So i raced to that part.
I just find that i'm so eager to get these scores that i actually don't care if the game is crap.
Heck, i have 980 Viva pinata GS on my tag -.- I didn't even like that game, although the pinatas were pretty cool.

I don't have a 360, but to me, if you are something of an achievement whore, then you are at least getting your money's worth every time you buy a game, that's at least the bright side to all of this.

some achievments are good but others are just plai crap. games like L4D have average acheivments and games like mass effect and fallout 3 have shit acheiements and games like halo have the worst kind of achiements they are still there so what!
if i could list the greatist acheiment games they would probably be
dead rising and crackdown. serously folks you gotta admit "body armor" anyone? and frikken "pimp" those are goddamn hilarous
but on the other hand there are games that just give you acheiments for completing quest, bethesda has this problem as does transformers and sadly most rpgs/
personaly my favority is the wacky ones but thaz just me

I don't look at achievements as something that MUST be done. One of the perks of being a casual gamer I guess. Rather, I look at achievments as something to look back on and say, "Hey, I killed 97 ninjas using just a paper shuriken and a condom? Right on!!" I look at achievments as a kind of reward for just playing a game. And it's kinda nice.

Achievements are pretty much just poor ways to brag to someone by saying "n00b i got this ahevement 5 secs b4 u did lololololol". Not saying there are some fun ones, but achievements just have no purpose really.

I look at achievments as achievments, if you have them then it is proof that you have done more than the guy next to you. E.G getting the seriously achievment is an achievment worth boasting and you can't get that without playing the game as it was intended - plus it gives a gamer pic.

I think achievements were a great idea.
There are the odd few pointless achievements (Heres looking at you, Shadowrun.)
They give some extra lifetime to a game, along with some of them requiring you to actually step up your game.

I believe that "achievements" in their most basic form are good for a game. I see achievements as more of unlockables or the feeling of successfully completing a specific scenario.

Take for example Super Smash Brothers Brawl, few people ever mention the alarming amount of work that has gone into the game in terms of music, customization, or even the wall of "achievements" that can be unlocked, enhancing the gaming experience.

For those who would rather label me as a fanboy for the previous statement, I offer the following counter-argument. Take for example the Half-Life series, you start with nothing, then a crobar, and work your way up to bigger weapons and tools. You "achieve" a greater ability to survive in a hostile environment. The same can be said about a lot of FPS games.

Final argument, and although I absolutely despise the game, players of World of Warcraft play the game to "achieve" the maximum level...

As for the simple text and points achievements, some I can agree with (those that are like a badge, medal, or award), but the ones that simply "mark" your progress can go away...

I used to think achievements were pretty cool, only saw them a few times on my friends 360's.

And from a dev's pov I can see the reason for putting them in, because they simply give an incentive to the user playing the game more - thereby, perhaps, making it more popular and thereby, again perhaps, selling more copies.

But now that every gameplatform makes use of it, it's kind lost its vibe. And some achievements are just down right stupid - take l4d for an example: "burn the witch" throw a molotov on a witch. Although it may seem pretty clever (and I see the name pun), in my experience people just want the achievement without any regards for their own and others safety, and they just throw a molotov on the witch as soon as they see her - normally resulting in the player getting knocked down - at expense of the team.
Though some achievements work the other way around, like for instance "hunter punter" and drag and drop, I still think some of them screw up gameplay, in this case teamplay.

just my two cents

I actually like them, but I don't actively go looking to achieve them either. I just play and let them 'flow'.

Chances are if you end up playing a certain game for a substantial amount of time you're going to pick up quite a lot anyway, especially stuff like "Kill X amount of mutant squids" etc.

I'm indifferent on the whole achievement thing really, they're utterly pointless and yet kind of satisfying to attain. You can just ignore them though, you don't have to look at all the difficult shit you have to do to get max pointage.

Games should follow CoD4's example and keep achievements out of multiplayer. I don't care what people spend their time doing in single player as long as they actually play when the match starts.

I absolutely hate achievements in multiplayer. Because the assholes who are obsessed with making a little box pop up ruin the experience. Whenever I hear a bunch of people in my game saying "lets party up and get some achievements!" I join up and annihilate them. While they're busy lining up for a 5-kill laser shot, I'm almost there in a tank.

Sorry if this has been posted, but I didn't feel like reading the whole thread.
For all you who don't like the pop up that ruins immersion you can turn notifications off. You still get the fun of achievements but you don't have to deal with pop ups.

On topic, I love achievements they add so much gaming value to well games, look at game like Call of Duty 4 would I have strived to beat the mile high mission on veteran without the achievement... well probably because I loved that mission but having the achievements gave me some kind of reward.

Yes I achievement whore but only because it adds hours of game play to already great games such as mirror's edge that games short anough that you could be done with it in hours but with the time trial achievements you have a goal to works towards.

Achievements.. urgh.

Yay, Valve! Let's add achievements to TF2! But let's not do it for every class.. no.. just one!

And poof, everyone was suddenly a medic. New patch.. Hey! 75% of the team is a pyro! .. etc.

I think it's weird the achievements bother you so much. It's not as if you HAVE to get them in order to enjoy the game or anything. They're just a little extra. I usually play the game and complete it and when I haven't gotten all achievements yet I'll just try to get a few. There's only one game for which I got all the achievements and that's Oblivion, but that's because those achievements are easy. You just get them by playing the game, pretty much.

well achievements are a good thing but theres a bad part 2. they cover a part of your screen when you get them and then when u look at it you get killed.
