Achievements have ruined my gaming.

I don't worry about achievements much, I only really go for the ones that involve doing something difficult rather than the grind ones.
E.g. "may i have this dance" in Mirrors Edge (involves performing a sequence of manoeuvres) rather than "Seriously" in Gears of War (10,000 kills online).

I think gamerscore makes achievements much more addictive. That's why I don't bother as much with steam achievements.

I try to get quite a few of the easier achievements, but I don't go out of my way to get them. Case in point, my Gamerscore hasn't even broke 10,000 yet and I've had my 360 since July 2006 and I have over a dozen 360 games.

However, what I HATE are the online achievements, because then you get achievement whores that throw away any sense or logic in playing the game because they want to get a certain achievement. You get the guys who TK you because you picked up a weapon that they need for a certain achievement. You get people running around like idiots because they are trying to get a different achievement. You get people who cuss you out for ten minutes for "stealing their kill" because they are trying to get the "I Have No Life, God End My Sorry Existence: Get 100,000,000 kills online" achievement.

THAT is what ruins my enjoyment of the game.

The problem is, to many of these people, "kill stealing" is when someone else kills an enemy in their general area that they aren't even looking at. Frankly, "kill stealing" doesn't exist; you either get the kill or don't, and it isn't "stealing" when two people are shooting at the same enemy and the other guy's bullet is the one that kills the enemy first. It isn't "your" kill until you actually kill the enemy, and the crybabies that whine "kill stealer!" are among the most annoying on Live. They are basically just making up a retarded reason to curse and swear at someone they have never met, and likely never will.

so when i down a guy in lets say warzone, in Gears of war, and we can both see its my down and you shoot him while hes down you didnt steal it? Your wrong, if it was yours you would get the down and if he was yours when he bleeds out it would say you killed him. Also under kill steal is when i shoot him and take off 99% of his health and you come over and breath on the guy killing him. I'm sorry but if i followed you and did that to all of your kills i strongly doubt you would be ok with it.

Or, I could, you know, be completely indifferent about it because I don't care about grinding myself into a coma to get that ridiculous achievement. Or, I could do something really drastic that no one else would ever think of. I could *gasp* leave the match and find another one. Or, you know, there is also the fact that I don't even play Gears online because I don't feel like listening to the verbal diarrhea of the terrible community that populates the game. If I wanted to hear 13 year olds scream random strings of profanity and act like gigantic cunts when they don't get their way then I would become a teacher...Or get a job at Toys R Us.

If you want the kill so bad, just make sure you are the one that gets it. Don't ***** and moan at someone else for, God forbid, playing the game and killing an enemy. There is no such thing as "kill stealing;" the kill goes to the person that kills the enemy. I'm sorry, but people who ***** and moan about "kill stealing" annoy me to no end. You are basically bitching at someone for PLAYING THE GAME, and they aren't even doing something really disruptive like TKing or anything; they are killing the enemy. It is like me cussing out a guy on my team in a game of Capture the Flag because I wanted to be the one that brought the flag to the base instead of him.

I like achievements. Without them I would never be able to tell people how annoying it was putting that fracking garden gnome in the missile.

I like to beat a game once, then replay it and proceed to get the achievements that I know I can get within a reasonable amount of time. They're just an added bonus, because I tend to be a videogame completionist.

I'll never play something like Yaris or Avatar for achievement points. The game has to be fun for me to play it.

Through the course of just playing a lot of games I've managed to unlock way too many achievements, it's rather embarrassing, sort of a sign hanging over my head saying "hey look at this guy! He plays games way too much!". I wish they didn't exist.

But what would be useful is achievements for courteous and helpful online behaviour.

I agree, the Team Fortress 2 ones (sort of) encouraged people to act like people, and I wish they would do that more. They also provide players with shiny new toys.

I don't pay "achievements" any mind. I know some people who make it a mission to unlock all they can in a game, but honestly, it doesn't really have an effect on anything you play, other than giving my completeist friends something to do :)

Personally I don't like Achivements. If your not gaming for yourself then I see no reason to game at all. Granted grinding out levels in an RPG can be fun, but at the same time achievements feel more like shoehorning things in to increase play time and make a game feel like it has more to it hwen all it really takes is a few lines of script to say "if this person has done this they get this." I will admit in things like call of duty it can help a bit to go 'hay I have something new' and add a slight RPG element but it takes a game like Deus Ex to bring out a good mix of RPG and FPS. I personally feel that if something is in a game it should serve more of a purpose and make more sense.

Just do what I did with that crappy Yaris arcade game, forget the achievements. If you don't like the game, get rid of it. If you like a game, let the achievements enhance it rather then destroy it. Not like anyone checks your achievements anyway.

Not Achievements as such, but I see a few annoying trends with PS3 Trophies.

Mercs 2, for example. You get a Trophy for completing the Tutorial. You get a Trophy for hijacking the Tank in the Villa, which is essentially there to teach you HOW to hijack vehicles. You get one for obtaining each team member, one of which you must obtain to progress beyond, say, the second mission. You actually get him during the second mission. What's the damn point?

Then Mercs 2 throws in the stupid Trophies. "Perform a Burnout". WHY!? It's pointless! Burnouts do nothing in Mercs 2!

LittleBigPlanet does it better - the Trophies tend to be for the usual (beat the story mode, for example), but most of them are designed to encourage you to whore parts / stickers for your levels, make your own levels, share them, and try out lots of other people's levels.

So yeah, I like the idea of Achievements / Trophies that encourage good play, or that reward you for learning how to play, but I don't see the need for "Shoot one guy in the head then hide for the rest of the match" style 'accomplishments'.

Achievements are awesome, and I'd actually say that they have done the opposite for me and made gaming even more fun. It's just nice to have a record of what you've achieved.

I don't play just to get achievements, but I do like to have a look at the achievement list and plan how I'm going to play through a game so I maximise the number of achievements I get. It's just more satisfying that way, and it means I don't have to trek back through potentially hours of gameplay just to get a few points that I could have picked up along the way.

Achievments have nothing to do with RPG's or grinding and giving players an in game reward makes that reward part of the game but giving them gamer points is reflective of every game they have played.

By the way leveling up in COD or an rpg is not getting achievments, just in case you aren't up with the play on what achievments are.

Achivements never really bothered me that much, I try to get some of the fun ones and leave the insert-soul-here difficult achivements to the achivement whores like my friends.
Achievement whores don't go for the soul-destroyingly difficult achievements, they go for the trivially easy ones.

You can always tell if someone's a true achievement whore because they've got the 1000 from Avatar: TBE. (doable inside of five minutes of booting the system).

Rather, I look at achievments as something to look back on and say, "Hey, I killed 97 ninjas using just a paper shuriken and a condom? Right on!!" ...And it's kinda nice.
I want to play THAT game.

Ok I've insulted people on the forum for being shitty gamers but thank you thank you for giving me this opportunity to rip you a new one I was beginning to get bored.

WTF you don't want to play games because the achievements are too hard? You either really suck at gaming or you're five and just got daddy to buy you a 360, you want my advice go buy a Wii it probably suits somebody like you. :)
Now this is hilarious - your insulting people with low gamerscores - yet you have played 52 games to get just over 10,000. I have played 23 games (most of which I rented and found I disliked, Fallout 3,Mrrors Edge and Devil May Cry 4 are some examples) and have over 8000. Hm...

Oh, wait, your the guy who called yourself "hardcore", a guy on my friends list has over 130,000 gamerscore...your incredibly hardcore with all your Guitar Hero add-ons.
