Edward Norton, Ewan McGregor and Sean Conneroy. If a movie containing all three exists, I think I might wet myself.

EDIT:

Morgan Freeman is a failsafe. He is just so awesome he could be the lead in a movie by the makers of Scary Movie and still do an oscar winning performance.
Seconded.

I'm curious why no one has mentioned Christian Bale yet.
I can recommend "the Machinist" to see how diverse rolls he can play.

I WANTED to mention Bale, but while I generally love to see him, i cannot forgive him "Shaft"

And since we are also including women, I'd like to mention Scarlett Johansson and Nathalie Portman.

Edward Norton. Two questionable projects: The Score and Incredible Hulk (2008). While I liked both they were very questionable. In the first he acted very well, his role required two personalities (he was faking mental handicap to steal something). In the Incredible Hulk he played Bruce Banner. He was really believable as Bruce Banner. He played Nerd on The Run really well.

S. Johanson and K. Knightly AREN'T actresses. They're just models forced to read lines. Are you sure you're not mistaking talent for the fact that you've got something to give them both?

Classic actor time, it has to be John C. McGinley ftw!

Haven't you forgotten Christopher Lee? Everything I have seen or heard him in has been good, even if the movie or game wasn't.

Nathalie Portman.
What about that Star Wars crap she managed to get embroiled in?

Other than that she is awesome.

I am suprised people keep saying Morgan Freeman. See, for an actor to be really good they have to be believable taking on any role at all. Morgan Freeman has basically one act. He is really good at that one role he consistently performs but for him to be a truly great thespian he has to do something different.

Johnny Depp is an example of what I mean. The guy has played pirates, nutcases, a geek, a freak with scissors for hands, gangsters, and makes every single role believable.

The RR man himself, Robert Redford! Leg end.

Also Robert Carlyle is amazing as well, consistently awesome.

Is everyone here a 90s baby?

Harrison Ford, man! What's wrong with you all? Indiana Jones, Star Wars, Fugitive, numerous political/government thrillers (Patriot Games, AirForce One) hell even Six Days and Seven Nights was good. I've yet to see a movie of his that wasn't good.
God yes! Harrison Ford does own quite a bit doesn't he?

no Simon Pegg yet?
frankly I'm shocked, disapointed and hungry
He's a decent comic actor, but not a legenday actor by any stretch of the imagination.
Did you see him in Land of the Dead? He was so not trying to rip that womans throat open.

As great a guy as Will Smith is, he needs more diverse rolls to really act different then the two or three roles he gets.

Most others have been mentioned a few times.
Trying to think of great female actors and not many come to mind. Sigourney Weaver Could be mentioned. I want to say Judy Dench too but I haven't seen that much of her where she isn't doing the same role over and over.
Jennifer Connlley Is pretty good too.
