That makes no sense at all. I have no problem with swearing, but not if you go at it every other word. And the age limit on swearing? Well that's a bit a silly idea.

I commented on this, and he said something along the lines of, "Well I'm 12 now, and I just remembered that I'm allowed to swear now." He continued to say that his mom (his parents are divorced) lets him swear more as he gets older. So this leads me to the question, Escapist - do you think this is a fair system? Do you think it makes sense? I personally think it's a stupid idea. What do you guys think?
Age limits on swearing, nope.

But as I told my little brother:

When you swear a lot when your talking you sound less intelligent than you really are. (although in his case it was made worse by the fact that he also speak in a horrendous accent and with a very agresive tone)

Well when I was 10 I swore (dam and hell are not swear words. Fuck and ***** are swear words) so much just not around my parents then at 11 I just stopped and at around 14 I just used swear words for influence. swear words are only words that people think are bad but are just words.

When swears are overused, they loose their meaning, if a sentence as >2 swears, that statement/insult/whatever looses all impact.

An insult based only on the speaker's vocabulary of swears has no sting.

Well, theres swearing and theres swearing, some people use the same word over and over, thats just sad. If you can swear for 10 minutes whitout repeating yourself your on to something... its all about vocabulary, some people just use swearing other people use theyr vocabulary to swear. And if somone starts swearing at 12 they might get hit around the head enough to learn when it isent apropriate.

The word "fuck" has been one third of my vocabulary for about three years now. Fuck the fucking retarded fucking parents who go around fucking each other while fucking yelling at their fucking kids for sneaking fucking porn.

Now that that's out of my system, fuck is now one fourth of my vocabulary. I learned a new word from Chuck Sonnenberg; "shithead."

It depends on who swears, and why they're doing it.

Small children swearing, for example, you know that's not good, because their minds are too underdeveloped to know when it's appropriate, and it's obvious they're just mimicking those older than them.

Swearing in comedy is usually hilarious, and is often an integral part of the humor.

Swearing when

is fine, it's incredibly stress-relieving and satisfying.

People who swear a lot though are just idiots. Weak-minded individuals who are either too stupid or too lazy to say what they want to say without stuffing in some profanity for good measure. **** this, **** that, ****in' **** can go **** themselves, I'm not ****in' putting up with this ****in' ****, and so forth.

You sound stupid. You look stupid. In all likelihood, you are stupid. STOP DOING IT.

OT: Regulation of swearing is just ridiculous. Whether they get it from their parents, friends, teachers, people they know or, of course, the internet, they're going to get it. Whether they decide to substitute every second word with a curse is entirely dependent upon their character. And if you tell them not to, they'll either ignore you or do it when you're not around.

PS: if you're a parent and your kids get it from you it can be really, really hard to tell em off, cause they'll just come back with "I got it from you". Nothing much you can say to that without sounding like a hypocrite.

Kids are going to swear mo matter what. Best thing you can do is ridicule the act of swearing constantly. 12 year olde are very entrenched in the idea of being cool. Clarify that swearing makes you look like a blatherscate, and they'll most lkely desist.
My folks did that. I curse like a sailor, these days. I think we need to find better ways to eliminate the desire to swear.

Swearing is fine in context but if it stunts the growth of your vocabulary then you are left as eloquent as a fucking Welsh man

I'm 24 and still get told off if I swear infront of my parents. I'll swear plenty with friends, but most the times I don't. I'd get in trouble at work if I was to swear at either client or co-worker so I try to curb it in all corners of my life.

Swearing for swearing's sake is pointless and immature, swearing for emphasis is fine, but only if you're with people that you know and won't mind it. Also, I try not to swear in public (shops, etc) and tell friends of, as there's often kids about, and some of them need a smack in the face with what they say!

i think we should just stop acting like certain words are "cursed." the more emphasis we put on these words the more the kids will use them. Acting like their "bad" does nothing.

Ive been using swear words since I was a wee boy. My Dad is a chronic swearer, due to chronic back pain and headaches...so growing up, swears and curses / insults were the biggest influence on my vocabulary. It also made me very cool in the playground at age 5 :) Swears arent really considered rude anymore, most the time they're acceptable. Even in buildings of education...well, maybe here in Manchester anyway. I dont think an age limit is remotely necessary. And also, that whole thing about 'you only swear when you've nothing intelligent to say' is absolute bollocks <-- See, what other word could've expressed my feelings towards that phrase that perfectly?...no other...See, sometimes they're good :)

I was in my late teens before I ever swore around my parents, and even then it was in the context of telling a joke. I can't recall ever swearing in front of my grandparents when they were alive....simply a matter of respect.

I really don't like age limits on anything
So.. Lets sell alcohol and tobacco to 5 year olds then..

Back on topic. Age limit on swearing? Last I heard it's not illegal to swear unless you gravely insult someone. Like.. Calling a 97 year old lady a "Fucking filthy stinking 5 dollar crack whore so full of shit that your eyes are brown. And you smell too!" (I'm not good at insults..). Saying something like that is not covered by your freedom of speech and the person may sue you

People might get generally offended by swearing, but that's covered by the freedom of speech. I mean.. If you're in a giant crowd, smash your toe and scream "FUCK!", if there's one dude there who don't like your tone, he can't sue you, can he?

To get it all straighted out: I don't have a problem with swearing, just don't fucking overdo it for fuckedy fuck-fuck fuckings shit-sake! Hell... *****.. Sara Palin..
