I love open world games but I like games like Mass Effect too. Like you, I like story, and one of the things that annoyed me about Skyrim was they would start a quest-line then the next part would be hundreds of miles away and by the time you got to it you have forgotten what was going on.

I still think they need to get a handle on how to tell consistent stories in open world games but Skyrim was at least a step up from Fallout 3 and Oblivion.

That said, I adore the game-play in those games and have played them for hours.

I can't stand Gears of War 3 it bores me to death but I would never say it was a bad game just not to my tastes, same with Modern Warfare or COD.

I love playing the Sims 3 because I find it relaxing but I can understand why people wouldn't like it.

So yeah you aren't a bad gamer you just have different tastes. Which isn't anything to be ashamed of.

I guess this describe how I feel about games today. I don't get the same rewarding feeling like I used to when I complete one.
But the most important part for me is that I have fun while I play. The game can be the easiest game in the world and I will still love it as long as I have fun with it.

Here's the deal:

You play games for the game itself
You do not like a cheap, ego comparing fest known as multiplayer
You do not get addicted, and thus can enjoy games as a normal difficulty

I've got news for you, you are a REAL gamer. Real gamers used to actually enjoy playing games. Then multiplayer hit and suddenly everyone because this level of stupid that baffles scientists to this day. Hell, multiplayer is the main reason games have so many issues to this day. I would much rather play a co-op match of Killing Floor/Portal 2 (Which, by the way, if you're a PC gamer, I've got a ton of games you ought to check out) than deal with some flaming maniac that spams the chat with everything he can, just because he's pissed that the game doesn't cater to him.

You might not be a great gamer, maybe, you might be better than you think, but you're a REAL one, and that beats being a great gamer any day.

Actually, you just presented EXACTLY what I look for in games. The only difference is that I care more about interesting and (somewhat) believable characters than a story.

So I wouldn't cal you a bad gamer, just a gamer who looks for different things in a game than the current norm.

No of course not, you are not a bad gamer, you are a gamer who likes story driven games. That's cool. All games are supposed to have a scenario, otherwise they are merely dev tools, or demos. I'm the opposite, games with cut-scenes and epic stories tend to bore me unless it's some kind of masterpiece, like Silent Hill, Metal Gear Solid, or Final Fantasy VII.

Yes, you are a pox to all gaming, as should trade in your consoles and games, and use the money to donate to child's play. There is one reason, and one reason only the industry is failing, and you are the type of person responsible.

Either that, or you could just be someone who experiences games different than what is popular in some cases, who has a skill level not nessiarily standard (good or bad) and still plays the games despite it. So, yeah, you are normal. Huh.
Actually I would say this sort of person is a pox to all gaming, you know the sort of person who thinks its all about skill and being "hardcore", when the whole point of games are to entertain.
Anyway Are you me?
I agree with everything you just said, apart from the games with no story bit, usually I avoid them like plague but there are one or two acceptions like angry birds. I only like ME3 multiplayer cos I can play as mass effect aliens, and customise them. I dont understand people who play as humans.
No you are not a "bad gamer" there is no such thing (apart from kids 13 and under, playing anything above a 15 online, they are just annoying). No one can tell you how to enjoy a game, and there is no code you have to follow to be a gamer. My Grandad plays chess online, so technically he is a gamer.

Bad gamer! Bad!

Seriously? No, OP, you're not a bad gamer (if such a thing existed in the first place)

4. cutscenes- I LIKE cutscenes, they are somthing to look forward too (not games that over do it though...*cough*yakuza*cough*) Saints row 2, Red dead redemption, Deus Ex..whatever you would call Mass effect...they all add somthing to the game (for me) and no..I dont get annoyed at them
I like cutscenes too! I think they can break up gameplay wonderfully, and I enjoy sitting back and watching stuff happen. Cutscenes were about the only thing I enjoyed about FFXIII for example, but maybe that was because it was like a 10 minute long break from the actual game...

I don't know how one goes about deciding what is or isn't a good gamer, but you don't do anything wrong in my book. You don't do everything the same as me, but I can see where you're coming from. Everyone wants different things from games, nothing wrong with going against the grain :)

Don't worry OP, you're not a "bad gamer" and I'm not just saying that because I share a lot of those points. There's just no such thing.

Unless the person in question is a bad person, in which case the gamer tag has very little to do with it.

The ways I sees it is, if you want a story watch a film or read a book, they have a lot better stories (so I am told).

If you prefer to break up the story with some shooty fun time or stabby fun time then have at it!

The only kind of bad gamer is like that bell end who said something along the line of "it's ok to be incredibly sexist towards the female in this TV show 'cos that's the fighting game scene is like" or the kind of person who abuses glitches to his or her advantage, like getting under maps etc.

As long as games don't take a massive shift over to your preferred style of gaming, then I am ok.

I am not the biggest fan of stories in games 'cos they usually come down to what I like to call the "Mario story". So many games have this story, which is basically "I have to save X", x could be a princess, the earth, a person, some data.

Just think of the games with that as the only story in the game, it is basically every AAA game. I am ok though if they pad out that simple story with sub plots and histories for all the people you meet, like MGS does.

It's just when you are playing Halo or resistance or something and it's "why are we doing this?" ... "to stop the aliens and save the world" is when I am bored.

I also like to play the game, not watch the game. I am not fond of sitting through a 20 minute cut scene or my hand being held so tight it gets pins and needles.

5.. I enjoy games stories...somtimes more than the actual game itself (Dragon age) does that make be both a bad gamer AND a terrible judge at what makes a good story?
Specifically for Dragon Age, I find that combat system really kills the pace of the game for me. Liked it in Neverwinter Nights but ended up notching down the difficulty to the lowest just so I can steamroll the game faster for more story, but STILL ended getting bored by the pace.

The only thing that has annoyed me about this gen is that while games normal settings have been getting easier there has been no way scale the difficulty up to an acceptable level for the person. I think we could call them difficulty settings. Sadly, they don't exist or are badly implemented and don't give the "challenge" of bygone days that some people(me among others) want.
Yeah - unfortunately it's a lot easier to make an easy game that feels balanced than it is to make a hard game that's actually balanced, so most devs will take the path of least resistance haha.

I'm all for easy settings in games, but IMO it makes a lot more sense to balance games around challenge, then provide options to turn the difficulty down, than it does to make easy games and hope they become challenging and balanced when some of the numbers are tweaked upwards. But, you know,
Well, at least I still have the odd thing like Super Meat Boy(well that and flash games like Sony) I'll just have to be content with that unless devs make more options in games to suit me.

I really like the way Edmund McMillen makes games - there's clearly a lot of effort put into making his games difficult, but fair. This is also a big reason why I'm on a roguelike kick right now - those games have to be balanced, because if they were stacked too much for or against you, you'd know.

Your a "good gamer", you play games you like nothing wrong with that.

The only "bad gamers" are the ones who use the term "Bad Gamer".

Also I believe that there are some bad and maybe even horrible things going on with the gaming industry and some gaming community areas right now that may make some gamers feel like they are "inferior" or "bad" and its usually designed that way to make you feel like you need to "buy" a certain game to be in the cool kids club again, ignore it, play what you like because you like it, don't play something you should or are told you would like even if its supposed to be the best game in the world, go with you gut and buy games, don't get them sold to you.

1. Do you play games?

2. Do you enjoy them?

You are a gamer... There is something for everyone in the game world, you just gotta find it and enjoy it!

I'm not that good at games sometimes due to poor hand eye coordination (my panic button pressing is annoying at times, and I constantly get controls wrong) but I still damn enjoy them, and will play them through as far as I physically can!

I don't like playing multiplayer because I am usually the dud who gets killed the most and gets in everyones way, and I can't hack people getting pissed at me for it... I can't help having an intensive job that doesn't allow me to game as much as i'd like! :|

1. actually Im not that bad at multiplayer (ME3 multiplayer, since thats the only one I play regualry)
No wonder, its easy as fuck. I'm pretty sure they tested the difficulty on monkeys, then decided it was not easy enough.
well mabye it is easy then...

but I prefer ME3 multiplayer...to sommthing ike battlefeild 3 is because..well its actually interesting, its in 3rd person (which is a preference of mine) and I have a better grasp of it overall..and I can play as an alien/female
