I think of anime as being basically equivalent to Hollywood. Mostly formulaic crap with the occasional absolute gem.
My god. I can't believe I haven't been able to summon my own thoughts into words until just now, and it looks so simple.

The only exception is I would replace occasional with rare. Yeah, I hate anime forumlae.

You know, I watched anime when I was younger, had a period when I was really into it, and then just kind of stopped. Every once in a while I decided I wanted to try to watch something again but never knew what to check out; so, naturally, I started an anime review show.

Low and behold, I still hate most anime, but there is so damned much of it, the majority is statistically going to suck (at least, as far as I can see). What has surprised me is the number of anime I've found that I actually enjoy! Hidden amidst a sea of uncreative cliches are a few real gems. I would personally recommend "Baccano!" as it is definitely the best I've seen since I started these reviews. You know, if you are looking for more quality stuff to watch.

Why oh why do people insist on referring to anime as if it's all one big mass collective entity, as if it's only possible to either enjoy all of it or none of it. There are many different varieties of anime from action, comedy, high school drama, those weird harem things that I don't get where 20 girls all actively pursue 1 guy who's quite clearly not interested in any of them and the one girl he is interested in either ignores him completely or sticks him firmly in the 'friend zone'.

Congratulations on finding a medium which tells stories in a different style.

To me, someone saying "I don't like anime/manga" is like saying "I don't like books/films", it just doesn't make any sense to me.

Get Backers
Didn't the end of that show frustrate you? Because it seriously frustrated me.
YES, very much so! That's how you can tell if somebody has seen Getbackers or not. If in a "Worst anime ending thread", just about everyone who has seen it will say Getbackers. Left a bittersweet aftertase, but still overall enjoyable.

What's so weird about liking Anime? You either do or you don't and I happen to like it. Why is that strange to some people?

OT: Watch "To Aru Majutsu no Index"

I love anime, but most anime, especially mainstream anime, is pretty terrible. There are many great animes out there, however.

Go watch Clannad and Clannad After Story. Now. Once you watch it you will never think about anime the same way ever again.

Let me put it this way, most people are stuck playing DA2 and Black Ops and miss out on all the Baldur's Gate 2s and Classic Dooms. It's the same with anime.

Yup you like anime, you also are doing a lot for a girl. Good on ya getting to know what she likes and getting to know her, I hope things work out and you can both share anime. Oh and thanks for reminding me to check out Darker than Black.

Fucking ay.
I know I'm coming into this a wee bit late, and slightly off-topic, but I still haven't worked out whether episode 11 is one of the greatest pieces of character development/subtle exposition seen in a limited time slot, or the worst recap episode ever made.

Nothing wrong with animation that tells a better story than live action...

Yet it's all I watch since TV stations kept shoving reality tv down my throat.

Think the only thing in the past years I watched that was American was Supernatural...and they are making that a anime to.

Oh, a quick heads up; Darken then Black 2 was not as great as the first one..
I actually disliked the second, while the first one was one of a kind, a truly awesome serie.

If I think Dragonball Z is terrible, should I bother with anime at all?
Like others said; That's like saying "I didn't like Troya, would I like High School Musical". (Perhaps the other way around tho' :p)

Aw hell yeah. Episodes 11 and 14, bitchez.

I feel the need to start an "Am I actually starting to ENJOY My Little Pony?" thread, but nah, that's been done too many times recently.

Of course you should. Dragonball Z is a kid's anime and it's terrible compared to legit stuff. Start with Higurashi.

Don't worry man, liking (or LOVING) Anime is normal, in fact, if you do like Anime, it usually describes the kinda person you are,

Like myself, I watch Bleach because it can be a Serious near-death scene for a moment,
Bit throw Kon in there and we have a scene that's gaurenteed to be funny
:D
That's what I've been afraid of, while recently sifting through dozens of films and series over the past few months...

Funny, I'm more embarrassed about being into some anime than I am being into LOTS of videogames, tabletop RPGS, 'post-modern' comics (DC Vertigo and Avatar Press stuff) and other dodgy preoccupations... -__-

I suppose at least I can take refuge in rocking out on the weird side of things with favorites like Akira, GitS, Genocyber, Urotsukidoji, Perfect Blue, Gantz, Higurashi no blah blah, Elfen Lied, Ninja Scroll, Wicked City, Devilman / Amon, Paprika, etc etc etc....

(if any of those are even considered weird anymore, mind)

If there is one other animated thing from Japan you watch in your life it should be the Studio Ghibli movies. Just fine the one that sounds the most interesting to you and go from there. Oh, also Akira.
