Not sure if I've read this right or not, but the impression I'm getting is that they were stealing both from you and from Steam and the other publishers...
Correct me if I'm wrong, but the way I've read this, it sounds mighty illegal.

Honestly, I do think what he did was pretty fucked up, but at the same time, I know that if one of my friends did something similar, I wouldn't cut him off or anything. I'd certainly call him a douchebag every chance I got for a while, though.

Not really. If he's getting full price games off you without giving you something every now and then, he's just taking advantage of you.

Maybe you should ask him if he wants to split the price with you?
I would but he's kinda poor, which is another reason he says that I shouldn't mind giving them to him. Of course when I say poor, he just doesn't like to spend, he does have some money. But I'm not really comfortable with charging friends for some reason, although I'm not really comfortable giving hand outs either.
Oh, I can see how the situation is slightly more complicated. But that doesn't change the fact that he went behind your back.

Why don't you just invite him over to play the game at your house? That way you can hang out with him, and he won't feel the need to download it from your account.
More complicated than you think.

He lives.. oh, I dunno, about 3000 miles away in America. I live in England.

Your friend is being a dick, simple as that
Also, like the other people said:
He took your game without asking you

There's a word for that....

actually i think your friends being a dick.
What this person said. Although, with a slight difference.
Friend did ask.
You said NO.
He then proceded to DL it anyway.
This makes your 'friend' even more of a dick

EDIT: Other than Psychonauts, when's the last time your friend shared his chips with you?
Actually he didn't ask. For any game I've given him.

And in answer to your question I honestly have no idea, although I'm sure there was one time...

Me and my brother interchangeably buy games on steam and share with each other. It saves money and there really is no downside. As long as he agrees to get off your account whenever you want to play you should go ahead and let him download your games, as long as he does the same every now and then (you mentioned he does). I think you are being a bit of a brat.

Friends typically do each other favors. I'm sure the guy can make it up to you in other ways if you're typically spending the most on games between the two of you. How good of friends are you anyway.
Actually I'd say we're pretty good friends I'd say, although he does live pretty far away at the minute. But the thing is he doesn't really give a lot back which is another reason I'm kinda aprehensive about giving him another.

The flaw in his analogy;
Chips will go to waste if you throw them away. Games don't have an expiration date and are avaliable indefinately. Let's pretend that that stupid DRM system doesn't exist. He is comparing two fundamentally different things; one is food, the other is computer software.

As for whether you are right or not, it depends on your reasons, but in either case it's your right to refuse or allow him to use your Steam account. It's like a website; he is a 'guest' on your account and should adhere to your rules. If he hates them so much, there's nothing stopping him from from just going and buying the game himself.

Of course, he technically IS stealing since he is doing this without your consent (in fact, AGAINST your wishes), so that's another reason why his analogy is cling-film thin.

Could somebody explain the workings of Steam in this situation? Can both players have a copy of the game at the same time? Can they play simultaneously?

He's being a whiny twat and prick at the same time which is quite an accomplishment.
give him some achievement points and kick your foot up his arse.

This. Tell him the crowd at The Escapist said he's a dick, too.
Totally agree with Comma here. Tell him us escapists think hes a total twat and that video game piracy is bad.*

*Telling him the wrongs of piracy is most effective when used with hitting him with some impliment, rolled up newspaper or a magazine has the best effect.

No. I know a guy who got his Steam account banned for something similar. Three of them used the same account to play CS:S or something.

You bought it, you have the final word. If you said no, and he did it anyway, he's a jackass. I let friends borrow games to, but I let them borrow physical copies, and even then I ask to borrow one of their games, to ensure I get it back.

Another reason why I hate about buying digital, its way to easy to take the games from someone...

As far as i'm aware, you can lose your whole steam account for breaking the ToS.
Pretty damn sure it's illegal and can end very poorly for you if Steam can be bothered to go through with what they're allowed.

All the legal and account ending scenarios aside, your friend is being a dick. Don't get mad at him for it but don't stand there and accept his flack.

As a game developer, I'm all on board with you not letting your friend pirate games. Though you apparently already let him steal one of the games I worked on, so here's a hearty "go die in a fire" from me to you, pirate scum.

In the eyes of Valve and Steam, you are in breach of your contract with them that you agreed to when you got your account. Even though you arn't doing it, per say, your account is being used illegitamitally and if Valve ever finds out, all online play will be not allowed on your account.

So, no, You are not the brat, your friend is just a cheapskate.

Sorry must have misread. You've got your answer already though. Most people are saying that you are not being a brat so stop kicking yourself. If your 'friend' keeps kicking up a fuss you should suggest maybe they put half to the cost of the game & see how they react then. Otherwise you are just buying games for them. If he/she asks why, you say why should I pay full price for a game for you to have it for free?
