American football?

i've always wondered about this. why do they call it foot-ball.

i've rarely seen people use their feet in this sport (except for the kick in the bug U thingy) also most balls i know are round,like a sphere. this ''ball'' is not.

i just don't get it.(this thread is not meant offensive or as a rant)

Not really, in football you run with your feet, you kick with your feet, and there is indeed a ball.

It's because football (soccer) evolved into this sport in the U.S. The original sport is still called football, but it was given the name of soccer to make things less complicated. Also, this kind of football is usually referred to as American Football in other languages, e.g. Futbol Americano.

It was probably defined as American football at one point but decided to call it football in short. Then we adopted that name.
