Apparently Fox has plans to make a U.S. version of Torchwood and possibly Doctor Who. I'm really against this, I think these are classic British shows (or at least Doctor Who is) and I don't see how either can be successful in an American market.

Is it just me, or does this seem like a bad idea? Also, why are there so many attempts to Americanize British TV shows?

I thought Torchwood was Americanised enough.

They'll need the licenses first, and I'm doubtful the BBC will give up Doctor Who.

Torchwood has been retconned out of existence now that Russell T. Davies has left Doctor Who so they won't give a shit about that and might hand it over.

Oh god. If it was anyone other than Fox, I might buy into it. But if it is Fox, they will ruin a perfectly good series and turn it into a joke.

Anything 'Americanised' is instantly shit (see: LIFE ON MARS. Fucking subtle, that one).

*sigh* Why give it to Fox? They can't do anything right! I hate this damn country's Americanized shows, never living up to the potential... or maybe they are, I get mesmerized by that beautiful accent...

I won't care, because they won't show it over here. The Americans can watch what they like.

Why does this ever need to happen? Why can't the great American public, just...watch the original?

It just doesn't make sense to me why they need everything to be homogenized into their idea of culture, it's a very arrogant way of going about things.

No offense intended.
None taken, as an American fan of both shows, plus Spaced, Life on Mars, etc., I agree completely. I really don't know why they have to attempt it so much when history shows it doesn't work that much. The Office was the exception, not the rule.

Can't see it working (having watched the American version of Life On Mars), but hell, if they want to try, let have a go!

But really, Fox? They can't do anything right!

How would I watch Doctor Who?

I'll tell you how I've done it for years. I go online, and download it. Now, I do this because I'm a fan and go out of my way to see it since I discovered through a friend (from Scotland).

It's the same with most foreign films, they aren't given much of a chance and if you even know about it try finding a place that is screening it. Without the internet I'd likely never know about Black Adder, Fawlty Towers, Peep Show, Little Britain, Inbetweeners, The Office, and many others.

We don't demand anything, simply put we're ignorant of it or we have to jump through hoops to watch it. I certainly don't need it to be "Americanized" (not even sure what that means...) diversity is good in arts, and hope we always have various spheres of influence in any meidum.

Coupling! *fist bumps you* Best thing to come out of England since Tea. The actress who plays Jane is in this new series called Leverage, it's pretty good and she still acts mildy psycopathic in it.

Well, I liked the American version of Life on Mars? but that was ABC, not FOX. FOX doesn't have the reputation for giving its new shows a chance. And Torchwood's going to be a tough sell to a lot of American audiences. I personally really enjoy it, but having a cast full of bisexual characters will alienate a lot of people (unfortunately). My guess is they'll change it by giving everyone het love interests and I'll stop watching at once because Jack/Ianto are easily my favorite couple on TV.

I would be annoyed. I enjoy Glee, so leave those guys. Everyone else is fair game.

Oh god, they're going to fuck it up like they did with Life on Mars. Why can't America just show the British version, do us networks really have that little faith in the intelligence of their audience, that when they take a British show they have to make sure it's high on coke and packed with roids before they can show it to the general public?
