Jesus christ, you guys speak practically the same language. Why the fuck do you need to make an American version of everything?

Maybe it's that I speak a fairly minor language myself, but I can't understand the lack of willingness to watch foreign movies or shows undubbed... Let alone why you'd need to make your own version of a show that is already aired in your language.
most people dont like subbed movies and the rest cant be bothered to learn the language. im big on japanese stuff and im trying to learn, but i admit im too lazy too. my main goal is to learn japanese before the end of the year, fingers crossed.

also APPARENTLY the majority of the world speaks english so actually learning another language seems moot and America just has a serious control complex. the like being on top an in charge. its what happens to people with power.

i cant say this surprises me, what really pisses me off though is that it's made by FOX, how can we possibly have a sci-fi show that won't piss off sarah palin (who now works for fox).

Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha! That'll be shit.

As shit as the American Office. As shit as the American Red Dwarf... Hell, as shit as Friends after you've seen Coupling!
Much as I agree with your latter two examples, I found the original version of the office to be highly overrated. I actually prefer the American one.
Really? It was the same script, just with people who had far worse comic timing in roles that weren't written for them. What made The Office was the fact that it was believable, and the actors they got for the American one made me very aware I was watching a TV show, not a documentary.
I honestly had no idea it was the same script. I got very bored of the Office, very quickly, as I have with most things featuring Ricky Gervais. To me, he's very, very smug about the whole comedy thing, and seems to try to squeeze a laugh out of you. I suppose I just find the man annoying.
Ahhh yeah, that's fair. Ricky Gervais is an arrogant little shit.

Torchwood USA, could work, since the original creative team and Russell (the guy who created the show) on it. It will probably be a contiuation rather than someone digging up an old show missing the point of it and destroying it as a result.

Doctor Who USA, No! I'm still getting over the TV movie which though the Doctor was okay, screwed The Master over and the plot (I'm sure the Doctor travels over his own timeline in the TV movie which its been made clear he cannot do). Doubt that will happen though cause the BBC will likly be holding the rights to Who with an iron grip and hopefully the new Mofatt/Smith era will be as good as Davis/Tennant.

None taken, as an American fan of both shows, plus Spaced, Life on Mars, etc., I agree completely. I really don't know why they have to attempt it so much when history shows it doesn't work that much. The Office was the exception, not the rule.
Do I detect a fan of He's just not that into you there?

If so, right on.
If not, apologies.

Anyways, Doctor Who will always remain a British show. Who cares if Americans try and bring it into their culture? We'll just always have the one up on them that it's an idea they couldn't come up with on their own.

Personally I'd like to see a remake of the originals, I doubt they could really screw those up.

Doctor would fail miserably.

Torchwood could theoretically work, but I don't think it could ever really be as good if it wasn't so damn Welsh.

Would that be that movie that came out last year? The romantic comedy? Nope, didn't see it.

But yeah, Doctor Who will always be a British show, I just don't want to see it attempted by Americans, especially Fox. It just doesn't feel right. I already hate Fox for getting rid of shows I like (Firefly, King of the Hill, Futurama) and prolonging the Seth McFarlane shows I hate.

Well they could have a branch of Torchwood in the US dealing with aliens but for an Americanized Doctor Who? Fuck no!

Doctor Who needs to stay British in every incarnation. As an eternal Eccleston & Tennant fan of the Doctor, I roll around in agony thinking of how we in North America would change it up.

Torchwood, on the other hand, I think could be lent to American TV without a whole lot of change. It was the seedier, younger, more rebellious brother of Doctor Who to begin with, and putting that on an American market might just give some of the original cast a chance to break into the Hollywood market more easily. I doubt it, but eh.

After Torchwood's Children Mini (look it up and despair) they can't really make anything that would disappoint me more, but good grief stay away from our Doctor! The TARDIS is about as British as the Union Flag and Buckingham Palace.

And a good cup of tea.

Fox appears to be seeking to destroy science-fiction itself in the USA. Has nobody noticed? Any ordinary person watching an almost-certain-to-be-inferior version of Dr. Who, such as an Americanised version made by Fox, will see the series touted as one of the leading examples of the genre and think "yeah, I guess it's not for me".

They tried to ruin Firefly, too. Remember that? And when it was still a success despite their own interference, they cancelled it.

Ahem:

Now then:

I can't possibly see how this is a good idea. Doctor Who is a British show and should remain such. Torchwood is utter shite as it is. Why let us Yanks make it even worse?

Oh, God no. I just couldn't see an American Doctor Who ending well. I mean, half the series charm lies directly in its distinctly British humor. I'll stick to BBC America, thank you.

The only American ripoff of British TV that I ever remember working was "Whose Line is it Anyway?". Wish they'd bring it back...

Anything 'Americanised' is instantly shit (see: LIFE ON MARS. Fucking subtle, that one).
What is it with the idea of finding one example of a terrible iteration and saying that all of them are instantly shit? It might be a great philosophy to have, it really does not hold up to reality. Well, I think that I can do better and say that a good number of Americanized versions of British programming are actually quite good. Here is a list of them, with the British title in parenthesis.

All in the Family ('til Death do us part), Sanford and Son (Steptoe and Son) , Three's Company (Three's a Crowd), Cosby (One foot in the Grave), My So Called Life (This life), Queer as Folk, and Whose line is it anyway?

Anyway, if they are going to Americanize Torchwood, then Americanize it. I do not want to see the same show but on this side of the pond. Get new actors to do all the roles.
