The only American ripoff of British TV that I ever remember working was "Whose Line is it Anyway?". Wish they'd bring it back...

Out of interest, which version of this did you two prefer? UK or US?

I kind of like both, but for different reasons. The British one has more situational pieces, more sarcastic humor and better actors. The U.S. one had more physical humor, more sexual innuendo and drew carey was willing to get more involved than Clive was. I prefet the
british one, however. It just seemed funnier to me.

To be honest, I haven't watched much of the British series. I'll have to go with malestrithe here and say they both have their merits. You gotta admit, though, Wayne Brady was the most awesome improv singer ever. He even managed to continue with a song when the equipment malfunctioned and sped the song up to somewhere in the neighborhood of 300 BPM.

You remember that American version of Red Dwarf? No? That's because you cut parts of your own brain out to forget it.

This will be the same.

They tried to ruin Firefly, too. Remember that? And when it was still a success despite their own interference, they cancelled it.
Why are you overlooking the fact that Fox still put the thing on the air and still made the DVD? You know, the same evil company that decided to take a gamble on this series and in order to recoup some of the losses, made the DVDs that you all seem to love to fawn over. If Fox wanted to bury the series, they would not have made those DVD's. Instead, it would be something like Rockos' Modern Life, where there are no DVD, only copies made by fans that put them on the internet.

Why do you want to overlook another thing that was wrong with it: Joss Whedon. I know that you might want to give me the standard treatise whenver I say anything bad about the First rule of the internet, "Thou shalt not take the name of Whedon in vain," but Whedon is not entirely blameless for Firefly's failure as well. Whedon's big problem is that he rarely trusts the material to be entertaining on its own. He has to spend time making up explanations instead of coming up with a plot and the first half of any series he makes is him fumbling around. If he spent more time developing a story and less time world building, then the show might have done better. Yes I've seen the series. 13 episodes and 7 of them is spent fumbling around looking for a direction. Clever writing will not save any series.

If it were any other writer that did this, show him fumbling around in the dark you until he sees the plot exit point, would have raked him across the coals for wasting your time. Whedon does not deserve a free pass just because he is whedon.

Dear God, no!

After what we did to The Office? It just wouldn't make sense! It would lose its luster!

Gee that is pretty annoying. If they got Joss Whedon to do them then we might be on to something... he'd probably do a better job than anyone else at them and fox would cancel it within a season or two, making both Whedon-lovers and Whedon-haters happy. Just...not at the same time.

Alright, thanks for the answers.

I'm sorry, that post of mine was mostly a joke. I don't really believe that Fox have set out to completely destroy the genre; they're just after ratings, which I imagine are much more easily achieved in America with an Americanised version. It was sarcasm. I did rather enjoy Firefly, though. And you can't deny that it has a huge following amongst those who watch science-fiction, arguably better judges of what makes good science fiction than Fox, who need to appeal to all demographics for the best ratings. Whedon does seem to have a free pass in many circles, but Firefly was one of the things that gave it to him. I'm not even that familiar with his other works, beyond occasional episodes of Buffy watched after school.

I guess I personally just don't agree. I can think of one or two episodes that fell flat for me, and even those were saved by his excellent characterization. What you call fumbling I call telling stories and allowing the characters to grow.

Torchwood Usa: if they kept the wit and charm and don't change anything major then it looks good on paper but as physics has taught us *twitch* it goes see-through with grease.

Doctor Who Usa:http://images.icanhascheezburger.com/completestore/2008/9/26/128669194447281583.jpg
