Summer of '08, ammunition was plentiful and we got a great deal because we literally have to buy thousands of rounds for seven weeks of campers (yes, rifle and shotgun are both merit badges). This summer, instead of being able to go through the big retail stores, we had to buy from an exclusive gun club out of one city in the state, because they were the only ones that had enough .22 ammo. The price was outrageous.

People, when the BSA is having to check every store in the state of New Mexico for ammo, there's a problem. I hate the people hoarding ammo like the zombies are coming tomorrow. It's completely unnecessary. You want to go out and plink? That's fine, I do it to whenever I'm home from uni. But .22 ammo? That's retarded. But Christ, it's not as if ammunition will disappear tomorrow. You don't have to stockpile today when three months from now, it'll still be there. You're just driving up the price.

And no, I'm not a member of the NRA. But my boyfriend is, and an NRA instructor. We take our guns seriously, but this is just unreal.

Yeah, .22 ammo was hard as hell to find this year in the quantities we needed it. Yes, you can get a box or two of it at a hardware store, but 2000 rounds? It was a huge pain, and we ended up going through a gun club in Ruidoso to get the sheer amount we needed, at almost three times the price from the '08 camp season. If things don't settle down by next May there's going to be a problem getting it for the next season.

And as a rifle instructor, and with a boyfriend as the shotgun instructor (and now area director!), I appreciate your support of BSA shooting courses

Which is interesting that Philmont got so hot. No, the highest Wehinahpay gets, in the middle of July, is around 75. Plus it's at 8500 ft., plus it rains a bit every day. Yep, pretty much heaven on earth.

Well, technically your council will do the ammo-purchasing, since BSA usually has things like official purchasing orders IIRC. You won't be doing it unless you're at a smaller camp than Wehinahpay- your business manager and other bigwigs will do the searching. Shotgun ammo, in my experience from this past summer, wasn't nearly as hard to find as rifle ammo, but things may have changed by next summer. It's all up in the air right now, but it's not as if BSA camps are just going to get rid of shooting sports period, or leave only archery. Since it's considered an integral (though not necessary) aspect of BSA, somehow, our camps will come up with the goods, one way or another.

Hell, he actually signed off on a bill that made it legal to have firearms in National parks (granted, it was tacked unto the bill that cracked down on shady credit card company practices. I mean, I don't really like guns, but I can understand why other people do. Ok the reasoning for buying gun ammo is a little bit of paranoia. Well honestly it's not just the "Obama Effect", it's because ten years ago people that shot reloaded ammo by themselves. Lead costs more, so now shooters (myself included) are going back to buying ammo from stores. It's more of a coincidence that this is happening while Obama is in office.

As much as you guys love to lol about it those "gun nuts" aren't all Republicans. Democrats and Independents alike occupy the ranks of the NRA and even non-members are also getting swept into the gun buying craze. You can't just write the whole issue off as 'lol gun nuts.' What's happening is that a lot of people are worried about a Democratic majority with a Democratic president pulling an England on us and beginning the process of chipping away at our 2nd amendment rights. You may not think they're a big deal, but look at how England has turned out since they basically trampled its citizens rights to firearms. The criminals still have guns, the cops actually HAVE guns now, and the citizens are left with their thumbs up their asses.

Now, I'm not a loony, I'm just spelling this whole issue out for the slow folks around here (because this is the internet, and retards are abound). Now, the election turnouts basically caused a massive snowball effect. At first you had the actual gun nuts, start buying up boxes of ammo and beginning the initial creep up of firearms and ammunition purchases. From there it just spread out more and more as the supply begins to dwindle and demand rises the effects of the rush become bigger. The hunters, competition shooters, and weekend plinkers start to see prices creep up and the stocks go down and they begin to start hording, then all the armchair warriors who just pretend to know about firearms start to tweak out and they start hording. Not long after you've got people who weren't really into firearms but supported the 2nd amendment collectively go "oh shit" and once all these new faces entered the firearms scene that's when all hell really broke loose.

There's been record numbers of first time gun buyers since Obama got elected. People who enjoyed firearms as a casual hobby, or just respected the 2nd amendment have exploded into the market with tons of new orders because of the good ole rules of supply and demand. Stocks are dwindling and they don't want to get left out in the cold.

This isn't just 'gun nuts' and whacked out Republicans. I'm very much an Independent voter and even I've mulled over getting a case or two of various ammo just to have for my occasional plinking at the range when the weather was agreeable while the getting was good. Even the often derided Wolf ammunition, which has long been "the cheap practice ammo" has seen a huge price increase because people are buying anything they can get their hands on. .22 ammo has doubled in price. Granted, it's still only about 40 bucks for a box of 500, but a doubling in price is still a doubling in price. Good luck finding those 500 round bricks too.

It's basic economics at its best. Is it retarded? Yep. Politicians in the US know better than to screw around with this issue, but Americans are a tempermental and easily excitable lot so those of us who do enjoy shooting are kind of SOL until this whole thing levels out. I personally can't wait for it to blow over, a 3 month wait on a damned AR-15 part is fucking ludicrous .

Yes, I am a NRA member, but I'm only a casual shooter. I can still count the amount of firearms I have on one hand, lol.

This is actually quite old news, and the ammo shortage is not really that much of a problem anymore since Obama claimed that he was not going to persue an assault weapons ban, and it also helped that he signed a bill into effect that allows those with concealed weapons permits to carry weapons in national parks.

I can get .45ACP from gun shops anyhow seeing as it is one of their primary sale items.

The problem is that people were (and to some extent, still are) trying to make sure their hobby lasts if Obama tries to take away something a lot of Americans enjoy; recreational shooting.

I haven't gone insane and grabbed all the ammunition possible since, quite frankly, I can't. It's expensive to buy ammo when you are also paying for college. At any rate, I'm not too worried. Obama wouldn't dare to take away any second amendment rights... He's meeting enough resistance over a far more benign issue (healthcare). To do so would be political suicide, and the Democrats (many of which govern rural districts) would lose a LOT of power over such a move.
