how bout "Some one set us up the bomb"
not as well known i know but i could still work

or "would you kindly?" that's getting pretty popular

Sorry, but I have to correct you:

It's "Someone set UP US the the bomb" not "Someone set US UP the bomb"

You juxtaposed the UP and US. Which many people do.

Edit: Great. I start a fifth page correcting someone from the first page.

As an aside to this thread, would "Press X to not die!" be a good way for Escapists to greet one another?

Hrm... The Cake is a Lie doesn't work any more, considering that it has non-gamer fans.
What about, "You're likely to be eaten by a grue."?
The Grue approves.

Person A: "What kind of bard are you?"

Response: "A spoony one."

It wouldn't come up that often in normal conversation at least.
While I like it, I think that one might be an Internet meme... if it isn't then I'm all for it.

OOO! I've got one! "Hi"! It's amazing, you know, that you think gamers are a secret club. Of course coming up with a secret greeting would be a great idea!

"Here's to us"
"Who's like us?"
"Damn Few,"
"And they're all dead."

or if that's too long,

"Want some rye? 'course you do."

I've been gaming for nigh on 20 years and I haven't got a bloody clue what half of these references are. The rest are so generic that anyone would get it.

That said, I'm favouring the idea of saying something like "hello". You can always bring gaming up in conversation later.

See, here's the problem with this whole theory. A lot of phrases that are common now started as game phrases. See "the cake is a lie." Then people started spreading them around and people, instead of just figuring it out as a gamer thing, saw it as popular on the internet and jumped on the bandwagon. Again, see "The cake is a lie."
My point being, any snappy phrase that we use is going to have to be spread via internet. Once this happens, it will snowball into the same situation as the cake is a lie and we'll be right back where we started.
So, all this effort, while slightly amusing, is moot. Popularize anything on the internet, it's the internet's own until the end of days.

Seems like we already have a wide variety of gaming terminology, Frag, Mob, Griefing, Ganking, HUD, 1337, Noob, Pwnd, Zerging, and of course, LEEEERROOYYY JEEEENNKIINNNS!!!! A greeting would be cool, though it would be difficult to narrow the list down to a single one.

Press Start.

Isn't that a pretty universal gaming convention that has been carried on even to this day? At the same time, though, it is a little vague and still would ring a bell with non-gamers.
seconded.
Bingo. Most if not all games contain a start menu so that is perfect.
