I'd rather see developers work towards getting the damn characters to speak before trying to make the series more "mature" or "adult".
No No No. Zelda has the best voice dialogue in gaming for one reason. THERE ISN'T ANY

Why don't people understand the difference between "mature" and "OMGbloodsextitties!!!"? Some maturity might work, like giving Link a REAL romance (no sex scenes or nudity, but at least a decent kiss scene) and making the violence a bit more realistic (enemies leaving corpses instead of exploding into puffs of smoke, but not splashes of blood and decapitations). These things add IMPACT. But just throwing in sex and violence because you can isn't adding impact, it's pandering to the lowest common denominator. "Hey look, blood and boobies! Doesn't that make this game SO MUCH BETTER?"

Incidentally, it might surprise some of you to know that in Australia (where we admittedly have a different rating system from other countries) Twilight Princess DID get an M-rating for Fantasy Violence, something which initially surprised me. Admittedly M15+ means parental supervision recommended for people under 15 (not actually a restriction) but it's a clear sign that the game is NOT CONSIDERED TO BE FOR KIDS. And seriously, that scene where one of the light spirits fills you in on the back story with the dark wizards represented by a trio of Dark Links and an evil-looking Ilia pulls out a dagger was genuinely disturbing. Ganon's execution scene was also quite startling. Once I'd finished playing the game I wasn't surprised at the rating at all.

Nintendo wouldn't even experiment with one of their cash cows like this. Remember the outcry over Wind Waker's image change? Fans were so disgusted, it went right back to OOT-style for TP.
Sorry, another nit-pick. That's not what happened. Fans were, for the most part, disappointed with WindWaker not because of it's cel-shaded art style, but because it was rushed and incomplete. And Nintendo didn't switch back to a realistic art style because the fans were pissed off at WindWaker; they did so because they wanted to make a Zelda game where you played as a grown-up Link, and that couldn't quite be done with a cartoony art style. They also did it because "many, many, many, many people asked for it," but more for the first reason.

And they do take risks with the Zelda series once in a while. That's how we got Majora's Mask and Phantom Hourglass.
I severely disagree. I loved Windwaker. It was a great game...I didn't detect any aspect of it that felt rushed. You are misinformed. It was as critically acclaimed as any other Zelda game, with the exception of OoT. But fans still complained of the change of art style from realistic to cel shaded. The same type of gamers who think the PS3 and 360 are superior because "the graphics are better." The same kind of gamers who forget what's important in a game...fun.
It's fine if you liked WindWaker, I'm not criticizing people for doing so. It's a good game, the art style especially, but it was definitely rushed. Several employees from Nintendo already confessed to that. Looking back on it only further proves that (to me.) Dungeons were basic and forgettable in comparison to other Zelda dungeons. The Triforce-gathering segment was a horribly mishandled gameplay device. There were also complaints about the sailing in the game, which I didn't mind, but I can see how people can find that tedious. Don't get me wrong, it was still fun while it lasted, and the art style was excellent, but the game certainly wasn't a masterpiece in comparison to OoT and TP IMO.

All the LoZ games need for Link to get something halfway decent for saving Hyrule for the upteeth billionth time. At least a short peck on the cheek or something. I mean, I know he is dedicated...but come on......
Maybe he just likes killing creatures and saving the world gives him a reason to do so? If so, those poor, poor octoroks...

EDIT: Apologies for the double post, thought someone else would have posted by now...

Nintendo would never go this route. However, I'm sure it could be done very well. Majora's Mask was a seriously dark and creepy game, enhance the graphics and add more backstory/violence and you'd have an amazing M-rated/18 Zelda game.

Wouldn't work, the zelda universe just wouldn't work. It might as well be a totally new game
Actually I believe Zelda is one of the few Nintendo franchises that could go mature but still be Zelda. All the set pieces were there for much darker game in Ocarnia of Time and Majora's Mask, and Twilight Princess shows that Nintendo could make LoZ darker but still be true to itself. Combine a M rated Zelda game, and the cel-shaded Link Nintendo could create two Zelda franchises, which is sorta of what they're doing to appeal to different auidences heck I wouldnt put it past them.
It just wouldn't seem right to me

If you ask me, an M-rated Zelda could be made. Most of it would just have to be about the rather gruesome ways to kill each and every enemy in the game. Or how the ever-spreading darkness of Ganon would affect even the children, turning them into creatures with horrible lust for blood. However, Zelda with pronographic hints or/and imagery? Dear god no.

It's possible, sure, it just won't be made.

G and H.
C'mon, tentacles!
...What? Am I the only one who found many... "fun" uses for Midna's powers, along with the powers of many others from past games?
And yeah, we need to bring in a truly DARK Dark Link.
Among other things.
*Cough* Zelda On Midna On Malon On Saria On Navi On Ruto On Impa (Young Version) On Nabooru On Agitha (From TP) On Ashei (Same) On Great Fairy On Hena (Again, from TP) On Ilia (Also TP) On Tatl On Ciela On Epona *Cough*
...What?!

It really depends on the content. If Zelda was given an M rating, it'd need to be the right kind of M at the right time. You don't want to change the overall feeling or spirit of Zelda.

First, a general point: plenty of the people who played Zelda in their childhood are adults now. This means that adult content will be more accepted, though still not necessary.

A) Swearing wouldn't add anything to it. It'd be GTA Zelda style. Nintendo can't do swearing ever anyway - name one game they developed that has swearing. You will have difficulty.

B) Blood would add the consequence of what really happens when you put a sword through something to the game. That's probably a plus for any kiddies who (in the legal presence of an adult, of course) do play the game. This way they don't get any silly ideas about bodies disappearing when you stab them. Hah.

C) Gore would be over the top though. Leave that for R rated games.

D) I fail to see how tits/ass/genitalia would add anything except for the extreme fanboys who *really* like Zelda.

E) Sex would be out in my opinion, since it's got nothing to do with what Zelda is about.

F) "Dark Link" has been done before. And turning heroes evil (or "tainting" them through bad deeds) is an extremely cliché concept - it's been done a thousand times before. Look at Prince of Persia, Fable, etc. It's overdone. The Zelda franchise has the deeply entrenched spirit of a classic hero battling against darkness, and that's why I think it already took a wrong turn in "cursing" Link with the wolf form in TP.

I highly doubt an M rated Zelda game could work. It would be taking a perfectly good kids adventure game, and turning it into a disgusting, gruesome, bloody, mess that wouldn't deserve to be called The Legend of Zelda. At that rate, you may as well make a whole new game series. In my opinion, if you turned Zelda into an M rated game, it wouldn't be Zelda anymore. what makes Zelda, Zelda, are it's characteristics. The kid-friendly adventure game, that has a great storyline, good game play, the right amount of action and violence, and of course, the puzzles. If you change any of them, or take any away, it wouldn't be Zelda.
So, overall, I'm VERY AGAINST making an M rated Zelda game. And I hope to the Hylian gods that Nintendo doesn't screw up Zelda like that.

oh, and, GO WII MOTION PLUS! IF THE NEW ZELDA GAME USES IT, IT WILL MOST DEFIANTLY BE AAAAWWWWWEEEEESSSSSSOOOOOOMMMMMMEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Maybe they could make it slightly creepier or something.

But tits, ass and gore?

twilight princess was done slightly more mature than usual, and people loved it(I didnt, but others loved it) and as you said, If it was done right then it would work.
I dont know how they would add swearing though, considering its an all text game where the main character doesnt talk.
maybe with a morale choice system though...

They can. just use a little of Pan's Labyrinth's ideas of faeries and a little more on the creepiness of the the humanoid creatures, a tiny bit more blood and you have a good game and M-rating.

It would be interesting to give the next Zelda more mature content. But nothing wacky, fuck no. Swearing and detailed blood would work, but not having Zelda dry hump Link in the middle of fighting a tree that resembles a massive cock and balls and fires statues of Obama at you that explode into melted chocolate.

No swearing because no one speaks English (they speak Hylian or New-Hylian), and sub-titled curses are just silly. Not to mention Link has no mouth.

Blood. Yeah, whatever. Just a little though.

Gore. No.

Boobs/sex. Big no. This isn't what Zelda is about. Heck, the character Zelda is depicted as too dignified to even think of these things.

Dark Link. Shadow Link was my favorite mini-boss ever. He took four hits and it was awesome. That aside, Link is not a dark character. He's a hero. A silent hero. a silent hero who only does good in the name of justice and Hyrule.

I look forward to the next Zelda game and I honestly expect zero of these elements (except maybe possibly the blood) in it. Besides, if you payed attention to the story-lines and read all the things people said, some of the Zelda games are pretty mature on their own. I actually felt sorry for Ganon as my naive Link was forced to defeat him in Wind Waker. Midna (which is all I need to say really). Zelda is for all audiences because it has those things, but presents them in a way that kids don't even see the mature parts. It just doesn't click to them.

Perhaps if it was done in the way that the new Batman films have been. Darker and more gritty, but still capturing the original vibe of the the series.

Whoa, whoa, whoa! M-rated Zelda game? I guess it would be cool, but it would kill the series faster than giving it to Uwe Boll or Michel bay for a movie deal.
