I guess I'm in the school of thought that finds anonymous endlessly fascinating. They really are pretty formidable in their scope and persistence. And the fact that they work in what is basically directed chaos is interesting when you see how well it works. But I'm sure as hell not promoting them.

Yes, because they totally invented the phrase.

The Christian Bible: Mark 5:9 "My name is Legion, for we are many."

Hell, the list of times it has been used in pop-culture makes it even less original.

Yes, I am aware that I am stating that my own username and title is not original.
Erm, they weren't just using the name Legion, they were using the entire damn slogan.

How the hell do they explain that? It's not like some Tea Party publicist could have accidentally came up the exact same phrase on their own and found it perfectly applicable to the group. At least, I sure as hell hope not.
I was referring to Anonymous. They had no right to get pissy that another group used the slogan when they stole it themselves.

So them "punishing" another group for using it is both petty and hypocritical.

I don't know what's more sad, that people fear this group or that they respect them.
we went over this same thing with mass effect 2

Am I the only one who finds it hilarious that a group of Christian fundamentalists used the line "We are Legion" a quote attributed to a man possessed by a Biblical demon?
Never thought of that.. that is funny! Just another reason to point out blaring hypocrisy in organized religion

I love these types of stories. I always find them so interesting. I'm not sure who to dislike in this one though >.>

Sorry what is the Oregon Tea Party? I have never heard of them
A christian fundamentalist political party in America controlled by Fox news and corporatist politicians, with the main majority of members being rednecks and people who think they're doing good, yet are tricked by Fox into being against everything that would help them

Uh, so have Anonymous just claimed copyright for that passage of the Bible? Because I think that's ridiculous in so many ways I can't describe it. I hope they don't start attacking anyone who uses it, because it's a nice quote to steal for your work.

I love how the Tea Party, those stalwarts aiming to rescue the United States from the grasp of damned flaming liberals, bends to hackers like that.

No doubt the rest of us would, but you do expect some backbone from authority.
I best that a lot of people take offense to the fact that you just called 4 Chan hackers. I guarantee you at least 90% of them are script kiddies that have no idea what they are actually doing besides what they ask for as a program to hit a site. Also in the Hacker subculture there are only about 5 ACTUAL hackers one of which is the creator of the Linux operating system.

This is interesting. Why is it that Anonymous is more influential political movement than an actual political movement? There is a subtle irony in this situation that is amusing me to no end.

I understand why the Tea Party is pissed, but why the hell would they use Anon as an example? Trolling is the worst way to gain prestige and legitimacy.

1) Don't get so worked up over Anonymous. Normal people rarely, if ever, cross paths with the people that comprise the collective, and when they do it's usually in the form of said normal person reacting to one of their attacks. The ones who actually need fear Anonymous' ire are those that speak openly against the "organization", or those that exude excessive arrogance or stupidity. (This is, of course, only a general rule. There are always incidents, like the epillepsy foundation attack, that break the paradigm.)
Really? Are you that clueless? Normal people ARE anonymous. Anon comprises people from everywhere. I refer you to John Gabriel's Greater Internet F*&kwad Theory... Normal person + Anonymity + Audience = Total F*&kwad. That's all anon is. And anyone is capable of the stupidity that attracts attention by the group. The only real safety is that for the most part they don't care about you and its not fun enough to harass you.

You don't pull on Superman's cape.
You don't spit into the wind.
You don't pull the mask off the old Lone Ranger,
And for the love of all that's good and holy, don't piss off Anonymous.

I wouldn't worry about the Oregon Tea Party pulling off Anonymous-style hijinks; they're self-selected for unenlightened self-interest, not technical prowess.
