Yes, because they totally invented the phrase.

The Christian Bible: Mark 5:9 "My name is Legion, for we are many."

Hell, the list of times it has been used in pop-culture makes it even less original.

Yes, I am aware that I am stating that my own username and title is not original.

I think it's more their use of the capitalized Anonymous that got on Anonymous's nerves. I mean, the Tea Party basically cribbed their entire tagline, which is a bit cheeky.

OT: A political organisation that wants to be taken seriously is saying "We do not forgive. We do not forget."? Those tactics work when you're a bunch of anonymous internet users, or when, y'know, you're actually threatening. These guys think very highly of themselves, by the sound of things.

Mind you, they have a pretty libertarian slant, and libertarianism seems to come with a "You are all sheep because you don't agree with me" attitude, which can't be good for your ego.

Oh /b/, you crazy board.

I personally stick to /tg/ myself.
/tg/'s not actually all that bad, to be honest. Most of the content on that board is fairly similar to the content on these forums (I'm not taking a jab at the Escapist there, it's a favourable conparison), with the occasional jackass. Which is pretty much the same as every other discussion forum on the web.

/b/'s just nasty, though.

Sorry what is the Oregon Tea Party? I have never heard of them
To try to give a relatively straight response: the Tea Party (and the various splinter groups such as the Oregon Tea Party) are groups of people who oppose policies of president Obama's administration which they believe will lead to higher taxes and deficits, in particular the administration's attempts to bring some kind of inclusive national health care system into being and the relief for various companies and financial institutions which nearly collapsed in the recent economic downturn.

Their name is attributed to the "Boston Tea Party" event of the Revolutionary War where American geurillas dumped British tea overboard in protest of British taxes on tea that they felt were unfair and/or to the acronym "Taxed Enough Already."

That's the non-partisan, straight-forward version.

More subjectively, people like myself tend to have a low opinion of those who participate in such groups for a number of reasons. Many protests associated with the groups have included signs and messages that were racist and/or violent, and while some argue that those messages are not intrinsic to the groups, there has been little effort to exclude or rein in those who advance such messages. Individuals from the groups seem to have little understanding of the facts regarding the issues they protest, instead repeating slogans and sound-bites; many fail to understand even what they're paying for health care at present, or how policies as written would affect (or rather, not affect) people in their tax brackets. And despite repeated claims that the movement is a "grassroots" effort (that is, one which has come into being from the level of individual citizens collectively organizing without outside sponsorship or leadership), Fox News has transparently and blatantly been organizing and cheerleading the "movement" from the days of the very first protests, going so far as to exaggerate the numbers present at various events.

All that aside, the Tea Party is at its heart a bunch of people who don't like the idea of paying taxes and have convinced themselves that this self-centered view is somehow in and of itself noble and patriotic. On this point, they are utterly, utterly wrong.

Plagiarism just isn't cool.

That and I'm suspecting the Tea Party people in Oregon didnt think the Anonymous people would notice?

Uh, so have Anonymous just claimed copyright for that passage of the Bible? Because I think that's ridiculous in so many ways I can't describe it. I hope they don't start attacking anyone who uses it, because it's a nice quote to steal for your work.
I don't think people are really getting this. The quote Anonymous claims is: "We are Anonymous. We are Legion. We do not forget. We do not forgive. Expect us."

The quote from the Bible is: "My name is Legion, for we are many." While the Anon quote obviously stems from the Bible quote, I wouldn't say Anonymous is trying to "copyright" the passage. It is their own original slogan.

So, 4Chan versus Tea Party.

Which one am I supposed to support as the voice of reason here? It's like an escaped lunatic got into a fight with the guy who shouts religious-minded obscenities on street corners.
Just cheer that they are fighting. Hopefully at least one of them will shut up and go away when it's done.

The majority of the population of the world do not understand Anonymous. At it's base level, Anonymous is an ascended meme, possibly the highest ascended meme to still be thought of in the terms of a meme. Anyone can become a member of Anonymous, all you have to do is call yourself a member of Anonymous. Whats more important is that you are regarded as a member of Anonymous by those who are not. From this starting point anything is possible. You may join in with the activities of others under the banner of being a member of Anonymous, you may start your own activity. You can do anything you want, but it must remain relatively unorganized. If an activity gains a more focused effort it will become regarded as a splinter group, AKA Project Chanology.

IF YOU DON'T WANT TO READ THAT, WATCH THIS: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x0WCLKzDFpI&feature=watch_response_rev.

Others used that term and I am only using a quick analogy plus I didn't put words in your mouth

Not gonna lie: The first time I read the article, I had some sort of mental block, and thought it was the all about the game Oregon Trail. And I'm puzzled, as why Oregon Trail has a facebook page, why "they" were anon. and legion, and what exactly they had not forgotten nor forgiven.

All I could think of was "Geez, a couple of people die of dysentery back on an old Mac IIe, and 20 years later they're up in arms about it? And now the internets are fighting back?"

Then I reread the article. Right. Tea Party. Not Trail. Color me derp'd.

Hm... I suppose... My stupid.

But I've actually never heard of anonymous before today. I just done' undertand any of it... Especially the epilepsy thing I posted above

Anonymous are internet trolls.

A large group of anonymous internet trolls. That's it. They aren't organised, or led, they're just a bunch of people that like to troll other internet users for fun.

The only cause they are in any way organized around is protesting the church of scientology, and even that is decried by other Anons. for being too organized and high-profile, and not generating enough "lulz".

As far as I'm concerned, they're a necessary evil of the internet - sure, they may get destructive and antagonistic when they have nothing better to do, but they also enact a lot of vigilante justice online as well.

What it boils down to is just that they're trolls, and they'll troll whatever seems like a troll-worthy target on any given day.

If that means trolling someone who's being evil and a giant dick, they'll do that. If it means trolling a kid who posts stupid videos on youtube, they'll do that too.

The trick is to just not draw their attention. (like, by using their motto, for instance)

---

Regarding the article you posted, it's always fun to see people repot on something like this with absolutely no idea with regards to online dynamics and crowdsourcing.

Some anonymous folk associated with 4chan may have been responsible for the attacks on those epilepsy sites (trolling, remember), but those actions aren't tied to "anonymous" as a group, because there is no central group. There are just people who are anonymous, who band together around actions and then disperse back into the crowd.

of course no charges were laid against anonymous, there is no anonymous. there are just individuals who are anonymous. "anonymous" is just a name.

Hopefully, that cleared things up, a bit.

It's like this, Chuck... There are three types of people in this world.

...[/youtube]

So, in this case...Tea Party are the assholes, Annonymous are the dicks.

, but does anyone else find it disturbing that the Tea Party [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tea_Party_movement], which bills itself as a legitimate voice of conservative political dissent in the United States, "admires" the tactics of Anonymous?

The only disturbing thing here is you trying to insult the Oregon Tea Party for choosing not to goad, the potentially bankrupting, "anon" criminals into an online war.
And here's a thought: maybe the OTP was referring to an aggressive, overwhelming, barrage of email and messages for getting a point across when they claimed to "admire" the tactics of anon.
As long as you get to insult those stupid Tea Party morons, then its all good though.
