Drugs are addictive too, and those are a lot more dangerous.
Smoking is addictive too, and that's dangerous to you AND your surroundings.
What's the bloody difference, save for the fact that games aren't as lethal as drugs and don't directly harm those around you when you play?

This just in!: sitting on your fat ass and reading The Sun for extended periods of time can kill you!

No seriously, sitting around and not getting exercise for extended periods of time is extremely unhealthy, doesn't matter what activity (or lack of) you are doing when sitting around. You could even say sitting in an office cubicle at work can kill you...

I just find it hilarious that for me, right underneath the story was an advertisement for The Old Republic.

They didn't actually blame the Xbox (or violent video games thank god) for the death, but instead condemned the inactivity associated with these activities.

tell me, on average, who sits in place for more hours across the world?
1) the person who plays games, who probably owns some form of kinnect/wii/sonys thing that im too tired to think of, if statistics are to be believed.
2) everyone who watches tv.

You're reading from the Sun! They refer to him as a lad, not a man, a lad for fuck sake! They're a sensationalist tabloid who like to get all up in controversy. Why on Earth do you read it, let alone take it seriously?

Could not care less. They're idiots, this changes nothing.

I'm not even a Brit, and even I can tell you what's wrong with that link.

It's The Sun. No one takes them seriously, for pretty much everyone knows them for the despicable sensationalist populists they are.
Pretty much this. I started reading the article and I thought "Hey, what website is this again?" and saw the Sun. That website has consistently printed news stories about video games that were simply untrue.

But to be completely honest, sitting around playing games for 12 hours at a time daily is really bad for you. Sure, a daily 12 hours of almost anything is bad, but I highly doubt that people would be as likely to exercise for 12 hours than play video games for that long. In fact, I'm sure many of us have had gaming marathons where we don't do anything but game all day.

The Sun is owned by News Corp, it's pretty much Fox News UK.

I've heard of many cases of DVT happening to people that don't play games and also haven't been on an aeroplane, it's just something which happens if you don't move around enough or are unlucky enough to have a family history of blood clotting.

Be like me, exercise your legs whilst sitting and also have a walkabout every couple of hours.

If you're worried about developing DVT i'd suggest giving this webpage a look:

BULLETIN: 'Death by "The Sun"'

A YOUNG man in his twenties from the UNITED KINGDOM has suffered serious brain damage after reading paper called The Sun.

After a brief encounter with THE MURDERING NEWSPAPER on the BLOGOSPHERE, his brain cells began DYING rapidly and his IQ haemorrhaged leaving nothing but a husk of his previous WHITE human form.

We approached The Sun for a comment. They responded: "It wasn't us. It was the muslims".

Not a bad article, actually. Shame to see so many people salivate like Pavlov's dogs at the mention of the newspaper, or at the mere suggestion that gaming can have its down side.

The headline's sensationalistic, but hopefully it'll grab the attention of marathon gamers. It's a good idea to get in the habit of getting up for a few minutes every hour. And of course, that goes for office workers too.

I actually like reading the Sun, I find it strangely amusing, kill me if you will.

I read the article earlier on today, and tbh, its not a bad article, they don't really blame the games or the xbox, and the father of the guy has set up an awareness site, not about the "evils of gaming" but about the dangers that sitting still for massive amounts of time or being inactive for ages can bring about.

Hell the dad even said that he didn't feel any anger towards Microsoft at all, and the only time the Xbox was mentioned was when his parents explained that it was his Xbox that he played on a lot.

Apart from the sensationalist headline (its a fucking newspaper), the article was good.

He could have died if he had read books for 12 hours at a time, same deal with watching tv, playing piano, or using a computer. It's the sitting that killed him, not the video games.

Let's see. We have an overweight 20 year old who probably doesn't eat right and never exercised and really did nothing but play his XBOX and watch TV, maybe surf the internet who died of some medical condition that was caused by him sitting on his ass too long?

And we blame the XBOX? LMFAO

I am so glad that boy did not get to reproduce.

I thought the point with that argument was that blaming violence on videogames is racist if the violence is perpetrated by suburban white people, because in the case of violence by inner-city black people no-one bothers to try and find any external influence that they can blame. I'm not sure if that's true or not, but we're not talking about violence here, just couch potatoism, so if I'm intepreting the argument correctly then it doesn't apply here.

Still retarded to blame videogames.

I know this is the sun and I hate toe defend them but assuming he did stay in one position for twelve hours at a time it is very likely had he not liked gaming he would have lived, I mean if my father didn't have such large blood vessels he would have died of the same thing(he got it from doing wedding and school year books rather than gaming)so while the article is biased it isn't like claiming gaming caused the Oslo murders.
