If someone posted an app that claims you can cure the disease of being black it would be national news

If someone posts and app that can cure you from the disease of being gay it should be protected by free speech?

I do not like double standards especially when applied to large groups of people.
I was just about to post something along these lines myself.

I'm glad the app's been removed, not least because it might encourage people who see it in the App store to believe that they should try to 'cure' LGBT acquaintances, and if enough people start trying that, at least a few people are going to feel like there's something wrong with themselves.

well what about those who don't want to be "cured" of their homosexuality. all these people are doing is making gays feel like they're freaks. it's already been proven by now that homosexuality is genetic, it part of who they are and they shouldn't feel ashamed of it.

oh by the way, you miss spelled portion.XD
...Did I say "potion"? I guess even a self-diagnosed grammar Nazi will mistype from time to time...

It has been in no way proven. There was one study in the early '90s which claimed to show this, but it was refuted soon after. Furthermore, there are documented cases of homosexuals changing their alignment - some by the very Exodus International responsible for this app. Likewise, there are studies which demonstrate the role families and culture have in homosexual behavior - notably, a tendency towards homosexuality in families with abusive or absent father figures. None of this would be at all possible if it were a genetic issue. Nor would it be wrong to seek a cure if irrefutable proof were assembled - after all, we treat and seek cures for many genetic conditions, including many with no immediate negative impact upon the survival of the victim.

The presence of a cure for homosexuality would only be a problem if it was made mandatory. If it was simply made available, and not forcibly distributed, it would be nothing but a force for good - allowing people unsatisfied or unhappy with the temptations and impulses they feel to lead healthy, happy lives - and to bear and raise children.

But there's a large contingent of the population who not only wants their activity to be allowed (a provision which easily falls within the bounds of the constitution, as it causes no harm to others), but to be "the right thing." To them, someone who doesn't "accept who they are" is a problem. Dissenting voices are a menace, and those who do not fall in line are to be expunged or marginalized.

...

The Exodus app is nothing like mandatory. It is designed specifically for those who want to be cured - but it's been taken down by those to whom the very implication that what they do or believe is wrong is anathema - by those who would stifle disagreement and dissent. It doesn't get much simpler than that.

I just wonder why Apple approved the App in the first place. No one would have paid any attention if they'd rejected it from the start, but now it just looks like they caved under media pressure, and I don't think any company comes off well after that. Then again, this is Apple so I don't think their shareholders need to worry.

This is disgusting! People should not be able to use 'religion' as an excuse for casual discrimination! There's a line that you shouldn't be able to cross like that; whether you follow Islam, Christianity, Judaism, Buddhism, or any other religion. It's like the old saying goes;

"Religion is like a man's penis. It's perfectly fine to admit you have one, but please don't start lecturing me on mine, and for gods sake don't try ramming it down my throat!"

You should read about World History...

Religion = Ultra Asshole Card

1) The persecution complex is just fucking precious "They took down our app! They're coming for your Bibles next!"

2) I was going to say it before I looked it up to be sure and found out that it's already common knowledge, Alan Chambers is gay. I mean, technically he's a "recovered homosexual," but he's gay. It's just a fun little irony for anyone that thinks "gay cures" exist. The "gay cure" according to these jackoffs is pretending not to like people of the same sex, marrying someone and living life hoping no one finds out about the gay hooker in the closet.

Really?

A corporation that is known to foster dogmatic restrictions using moral judgment to remove the PROGRAM that a religious group that used dogmatic restrictions to pass moral judgment. Is it just me or am I seeing a whole lot of the same thing?

As for the removal of the PROGRAM from apples PROGRAM store is fairly hypocritical of apple, even in the face of a petition calling for its removal.

Sure I think the idea of the PROGRAM is brain dead and not worth the code it is written in. But caving to the pressure of people who are offended and claiming its for ignorant people brings up the point.

I have no problem with homosexuals. Yanno, just so long as I dont have to see it myself. But the thing here is making the determination that people who want this PROGRAM or who do have a thing against homosexuality. The question is, If you think these people are ignorant how exactly did you make that determination? By using the facts and determining in light of those facts that thinking there is something wrong with homosexuality is wrong.

The only thing in this world that is truly fact is that existence is subjective. We do not live in an existence of absolutes. especially when it comes to aspects of mentality and psychology. And like it or not, the only way to come up with that determination is to take the things you consider to be facts and completely disregard what another group of people consider to be facts.

By passing judgment on a group of people for living their life according to what they think is right, is wrong. It doesnt matter if your an overzealous christian or a homosexual that sees the world against them. That said, Apple really has no business removing this PROGRAM. I mean I find Angry birds stupid and offensive to pigs. By that logic should everyone be denied the ability to play it if they so choose because of the opinions of nutcases?

But really all this is moot, because this is apple were talking about here, and Apple is perhaps the furthest thing from being the bastion of free expression, reasonable logic and tolerance.

Hi, Christian here, we're not all this fucked up I swear. I'm kind of phoning these apologies in by now, it's too frustrating to confront these overzealous idiots every time they pop up.

A whole lot of people seem to keep missing the fact that the AppStore is not public discourse. It's not even impinging on someone's freedom of speech.

It's a private storefront for a company that lists software to use on their products. If Exodus wants to host their delightfully bigoted software on their own site for users to download they can do that. Nobody's stopping them (except possibly the Apple EULA). Apple is every bit in the right just as if Safeway said that this group isn't allowed to put up "It's OK to Hate a Gay" posters on their stores.

The slippery slope doesn't apply? It's reached its logical conclusion (or part thereof) already in Canada and Britain - where reading portions of Romans on the airwaves (I assume on a Christian channel) can get you in legal trouble; where pastors can be arrested for preaching against homosexuality; and where just a month ago a Christian couple were barred from adopting a child because of their beliefs.

Why do you think they removed random games with pornstars that weren't even nude, because some christian searched for more pictures found porn and was offended

I guess I agree with the comment about how it has a right to be there, but not with an inflammatory, judgemental title. I can't at this moment, think of how they could title it that *didn't* appear inflammatory or judgemental, but if you're going to climb up on the 'free speech' horse, then...

I understand the sentiment for wanting this app removed, but I am really uncomfortable with how little Homosexuals or Liberals or Atheists think of free speech when the enemy is Christians with an obnoxious message. They could just ignore it, let the popularity of the app die, or even create an app of their own to mock it or prove the opposite point. But no. The solution to to protest and petition until their enemy is silenced. I don't like that approach.

Not America. I don't know anything about the state of religious tolerance in other countries, but here, it's numero uno on the big list of shit you're not allowed to fuck with. You're honestly suggesting that Apple's decision to stop carrying an unpopular app is going to lead to a revolution, a complete reversal actually, in constitutional law. Scalia would laugh you out of the room at the merest idea!

Honestly, this kind of reactionary bull is as crazy as that nonsense about putting up non-religious billboards being "militant Atheism." The public reaction to this was a bit silly, admittedly, but Apple only did what any reasonable business would do when people are talking about getting rid of their iPhones [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SNZxOk_bC64] over it (~2:40). I was no more a declaration on their support of homosexuality than Angry Birds is a declaration of their opposition to pigs. This isn't an encroachment on the right to freedom of speech any more than telling a man who's just ejaculated on you in a subway station to fuck right off is. The constitution does not falter in the face of an angry petition, and it certainly isn't going to discriminate against religious adherents when you pretty much have to be a Christian to be in any position to change it.

I'm sure my fellow religious escapists can back up that there aren't too many idiots that think homosexuals need "cured".

Someone should tell him that they understand what he's going through, and that their "dumbass cure" app was also removed. Then further point out that it could have helped him avoid his current predicament.
