I didn't use the internet at all back in those days, so I thankfully missed all that crap. Granted today Internet Explorer is still crap, only a different brand of it. They did, the potential has been there since they stopped trying to have complete control over the hardware in their systems. Once they introduced Intel into the mix it was possible to modify video cards to work in an apple machine.
